Ugliest mofo to ever get pushed as a "BJ" wrestler AND get over
Blazer replied to pantherwagner's topic in Pro Wrestling
This. Not every promotion had BJ wrestlers. They can't just be someone female fans like, it has to be a guy or a team that is marketed towards bringing a female audience to the arenas. From the AWA that I saw, no one was presented that way in the AWA. And not just women...but younger women. We've all heard the story about Jarrett asking Watts who his blowjobs were when they were doing the trade for the RNR Express. A lot of old ladies went to watch AWA wrestling at the Amphitheater in Chicago, but the young chicks...well, Verne just didn't target that demo. -
MLB Network does a FANTASTIC job with those shows. Hell, they even have the "Greatest Games" show where they'll have guys talking about a game inning by inning. This is a fantastic idea. It's a little bit different than just hearing them over-dub the match with new commentary, but it would be fun to see them take a break from the match and talk about it and then go back to it. Great idea.

No fucking way was Zoomhofe pushed as a BJ. He was a hard nosed dude. Just because he had a rock n roll gimmick, doesnt mean he was a BJ. I'll submit this, and I'm pretty confident in saying it. The AWA didn't have BJ wrestlers except for maybe Rick Martel. The Fabs would have been the first ones. The AWA was about hard-nosed Midwestern kick-ass beer-belly guys. Verne didn't think in the same terms that Jerry Jarrett and, later, Watts did. -
No fucking way this is true. Johnny logic # non withstanding. Jericho has been in and out. Mysterio has been hurt mostly. I don't doubt this for a moment. Punk EASILY outsold both of them. Easily.

Steve Keirn wasn't a bad looking dude in '83/'84. I think the huge surprise that people saw him as Skinner later validates that. "That's STEVE KEIRN? What the hell happened to him?!" I'm not sure the High Flyers were really ever considered a BJ team. That's not who they were. They were the all-american guys next door, but not your BJs. -
This is just a perfect post and 100% on the ball. And, of course, SNMEs don't count. Great stuff, Pete.

Autocorrect rules. Working on the old WWF Coliseum Video collection now. Rewatching all of the old shows. I have see most of these but had a chance last night to watch Wrestlling's Country Boys for the first time. Terrible wrestling, but some fun interviews and TNT stuff I had never seen. Little surprised it didn't include Hillbilly Jim saving Hogan from the haircut by Patera and Studd, which I have never seen re-aired after the original showing.

It's not so much an issue now as it was day 15 or 20 years ago. I don't regularly watch the current product or go to shows, so it simply doesn't come up in conversation at work. Have three good buddies that know I like it, and we will make references to old stuff when together. They are fans too. Wife doesn't like it, but she has walked in on me watching some old Prime Time shows and gets a chuckle out of Gorilla and Heenan...she thinks Heenan was trying to dress like Liberace and thinks Gorilla looks hilarious with the tinted glasses and receding permed hair. During baseball season, I watch very little wrestling, but during the offseason I catch up on old discs at night for about an hour a night. I am happy where I am at right now with my fandom. I like focusing on the old stuff that I like. Time is precious, so it's good to not waste it on product I don't appreciate as much.

The main event of Beach Blast '92 was Steiners vs. Gordy/Doc. It was obvious to anyone watching at the time. In hindsight, Rude/Steamboat turned out to be a fantastic match, and the entire card was a very solid surprise show. The build to the tag main event however clearly was placed on top in the weeks leading to the match, and this is further defined by that match going on last.

This concept is similar to my view at this point. I'm just going back now and devouring 80s videos. I've been out of the current product for years with no intention of coming back.

Sorry for the double post. Trying to figure out the mobile version of this site is a bit of a task.

It did air. That Oct 84 show has a fun Bulldogs squash against two hilarious Canadian jobbers ...I think Bobby Bass may have been one of them.

Unfortunately that Road Warriors match absolutely killed Chicago for years afterwards.

I'm glad I'm not crazy. I love Cornette and could listen to him tell old war stories all day. I downloaded an ep a few weeks ago and tried to give it a try, and the female host (is that Alice?) just made the thing entirely unlistenable. Who is she? That's not his wife right? Actually, his wife's name is Staci, so I just answered my own question. Yeah, Corny talking old Rock N Roll Express stories is great, but teamed with this chick, no thanks.

That's cool to know. I kinda got turned on to Parv and Sorrow through the AWA podcasts last year, which I want introduced to by listening to Will on Wrestling Culture, which I heard about through DVDVR....funny how things get rolling. I want to start listening to these soon. Are they on iTunes?

Wait, you're an ex? LOL. I'm still going through the AWA wrestling party podcasts from last March and haven't listened to any of the Titans podcasts yet. I need to catch up!

BTW, the Martel belt is much better than the Hansen replacement.

I cannot tell you guys how enjoyable these AWA party podcasts have been to listen to in my car this winter on the way to work. You guys have been a godsend. I feel like you are my family you've spent so much time in the car with me, and I find myself laughing out loud and some of the shit you say. Big props to Will, Johnny Sorrow, Chris Z (or is it Kris?), Parv, Chad, Johnny P and the rest of the crew....oh yeah, Musgrave too. I told Will this in PM...but these things are just totally enjoyable to listen to, even if you're an AWA geek like me and just like listening without watching the matches. Thanks for the entertainment!

Bret Hart was a much better wrestler than Flair. Unfortunately the hype surrounding Flair skews opinions. Flair had better promos than Bret, but compare the movesets of the two guys and what they were capable of in the ring. Bret wins hands down. Find the December 95 IYH with Bret vs. Bulldog. Tell me if Flair could have carried DBS thru a match like that.

What makes good wrestling? What makes a good wrestler? Give me a good psychological match in the ring before all else. I don't need non-stop action from bell to bell. A lot of what people considered "hard work" in 1999 was nothing more than a demolition derby without any real meaning or psychology to it. Now, that doesn't mean everything described above qualifies as that. I've seen some of the Dynamite/Tiger Mask stuff from the early 80s, and it is fantastic. But, on the whole, a great story can be told without mind numbing non-stop "workrate". Restholds can be used, the pace can be slowed down, as long as it is going somewhere. I just watched the Rude/Steamboat Beach Blast match from 1992 (30 minute Iron Man). What a great STORY. Rude goes up early 3 falls to 1. Steamboat has to battle his ass off to come back and tie it 3-3 with about nine minutes left. Rude has Steamboat down and almost gets the pin with minutes left, but Steamboat gets the pin out of nowhere with 30 seconds left to go up 4-3. Rude then valiantly tries to pin Steamboat with several near falls, Steamboat trying to hang on. That match was a GREAT STORY. Nothing to do with big bumps, high spots, intense work...just two cats knowing what they need to do and where they were going. Give me that any day of the week. It could be Lawler. It could 123 Kid. It could be fucking Jumbo, Bock or even Brad Rheingans (that one's for Sorrow and Will, LOL). Tell me a good story. Draw me in. Take my mind off the shit that goes on in everyday life. That's what makes good wrestling for me.

Yeah...this entire Jake Roberts "reborn" is with the help of DDP.
