Great episode. Rob's super funny. I just wished his connection was a bit better, as he faded out a bit at times and it was hard to here him. As a 12-yr old mark kid, I thought Funk was going to beat Hogan on that SNME. I thought he had him after the piledriver. As a former NWA champ, Funk made sense in getting the belt, but alas it was not to be.

Orndorff kicked Vader's ass and was tougher than Orton.

That seems kind of low on the list of scummy things Fritz pulled. Why don't you out-Fritz me then? The first thing I think of when I think of scummy Fritz Von Erich is when he faked a heart attack in the ring a couple of years after David's death This was the first one that came to my mind.

I was sort of alluding to that in the previous post I made. Bix will say, "This was when Continental was off TV in late '88 right?" Kris will respond with, "Um, yeah.. Yeah." LOL. So I went back and was listening a bit to the Larry Nelson riff about an hour or so into this podcast when Nelson said that John Nord had distanced himself from bad influences like Bruiser Brody (had been dead for a year) and had been reading the bible, then the bit where Nelson says that Lawler was working over Kerry and Kerry "had a bad leg". Was laying in bed trying not to laugh while I listened to this and wake up the entire house GREAT stuff. LOL

I don't think the original COD aired all of the 1986 episodes after Heenan's debut, did they?

Kerry vs Flair from Hawaii is on youtube in 5 or so parts Great, Great Match to watch in full.... For me, I really liked the Christmas idea, so once everyone was gone (we host Christmas) and my 5 year old son was off playing with a TON of new toys, I sat down to enjoy my personal favorite - Bock vs. Hennig from New Year's Eve 12/31/86. I know it was taped in Nov, but I saw it New Year's Eve that year in ESPN... Match is still, to me, the perfect 60 min match that builds perfect from start to end, never gets boring, actually has decent commentary (I enjoy Trongrad and Blears on this one), and really gets nasty the last 8-10 minutes. I think I'm going to pull out Bock/Hennig tonight and re-watch it on what will be the 29th anniversary from its original air date.

Thoughts/Questions from watching wrestling on YouTube thread

Apologies for the digression. I recently watched the WWF '84 Championship set, and Sharpe was actually on a Piper's Pit, and they were giving him a mini-push towards the end of the year. He won some tv squash matches. He definitely was not the same JTTS that he would become in '86/'87. -

America was a different place in 1985 too. We had yet to be overrun by the lib media brainwashing the masses. It was ok to love mom, apple pie, USA, the police and hate the Russians. -
I love these shows, and I know you guys cover a lot of ground. I always seem to hear Kris make silly little mistakes, and I wish I could reach through my kindle and correct you on the spot, but obviously that is impossible. Usually it's when Bix asks a question and Kris answers. I can't think of all of the examples of recent. I'm not keeping a running tab, but I've caught stuff in the Will and Pete Stein shows. Last night I listed just to the last half hour or so of the Dylan show. There was some discussion of Dusty's run and Kris claimed Dusty wasn't wearing the polka dots at Summerslam '89 against HonkyTonk. He was adamant when he said it. I'm like, no, that's absolutely wrong. LOL. Otherwise, fun show. I haven't listened to the entire five hours yet, but I did enjoy your discussion about the Coliseum Videos towards the end.

Parv, the fuck are you talking about? I'm watching WWW '88 now. The Fantastics were completely over.

This. I saw it live, at age 14, at a closed circuit location outside of Chicago. The entire event was epic. Andre/Hogan was monumental. Nobody walked out of that venue thinking that the match "stunk". I thought the piledriver spot on the floor was bad, and there was also a spot where Andre missed a headbutt in the corner brutally. He was supposed to miss Hogan and hit the turnbuckle, but came up short. All in all, you looked past those silly moments at the big picture. It was monumental. You can't try to review something 28 years later completely out of context in so many ways of the era and say the match stunk. If you lived it, you appreciate the opportunity to have seen it happen. It's a great memory I have of my adolescence.

Are you just watching the MSG shows from '84 or Spectrum stuff too? Mixing any tv in? Sounds fun.
-
Love the nod, "at least they didn't let Harley drive." LOL

That one was miles better than the Summerslam match and its kind of a hidden gem in that PPV something you wouldnt expect. Makes you kinda wonder had they let Steamboat/Savage happen in the tournament at Mania 4 because had Steamboat won they would have wrestled if it would have topped mania 3. Am I the only one who has read this multiple times and still can't figure out what he's trying to say?
-
Luger submitted him with the rack in '97. Yup, you're right, totally missed that. Guess that goes to show how forgettable Luger's feud with Hogan and title reign in '97 was. Lulz, what? Just because YOU forgot it?
-
US only? Hennig's in the top five. Any argument would be weak. Throw Flair and Bock in there.

Without checking results, I seem to recall Goldust had a controversial segment on that show, doing something either with Razor or Ahmed Johnson. I wonder if that's the reason for the rating.
-
Easy one for me....April of '94 when Diesel beat Razor to win the strap. Forget everything that happened to Diesel after that. Up until that point, he had wrestled in a LIMITED capacity. He was basically a bodyguard, and everyone knew he was Vinnie Vegas from a few years back. That was the first time they really strapped someone with the IC belt that absolutely had no business holding a title yet.

[1950-06-21-Kohler Chicago] Lou Thesz vs Buddy Rogers

Wrigley Field didn't have lights in 1951. Comiskey hosted some big matches back then, but not Wrigley.- 11 replies

Was the greatness of Savage/Steamboat hyped after the fact? Everyone who saw it knew immediately that is was one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, in US history at that point. I knew it as I watched it live on Closed Circuit that I was seeing something I had never seen before in my life. Right, but I mean hyped by the WWF. Did they promote it as one of the greatest matches ever right after it happened or did that come later? Hell, DURING THE MATCH, Jesse said, "this is the greatest match I have ever seen." Yes.
-
Yeah, it is.
-
I adore Regal, but has he EVER had a match as good as Savage/Steamboat? Regal-Arn at SuperBrawl and Regal-Finlay at Uncensored are damn close if not there.

Fascinating. Could have worked. Where did you see that? An old observer?
-
Nope. Classic example of watching something out of context without a sense of history. "Finish works for everybody"? The ending of this match killed Chicago as an NWA wrestling town for years. This is THE match that the Warriors should have finally won the belts after chasing them for three years. Terrible booking, killed the town....just brutal.
