    WWE Hidden Gems

Looks like some nice holiday treats coming our way tomorrow. Somehow nothing feels more like Thanksgiving than Harley Race defending his NWA title.
  2. #1 with a bullet
  3. The fact that that was any good after the Joe elimination is a testament to how fun all of that was really.
  4. It was the first MSG RAW where Austin gave the stunner to Vince for the first time.
  5. Everything listed so far certainly has it's place, but I was blown away by the 9/14/98 RAW when going through the 1998 season recently. Flair returned on Nitro, so the Vinces drew up a card that was more stacked than most WWF PPVs were at the time. Main Event: Austin vs. Shamrock for the WWE title (a match many had pencilled in for WM15 LOL), Taker-Mankind No DQ, Rock-Kane, Triple H-Owen, Edge-Gangrel, etc...everything was a blow off to a back story or a "dream" match or some sort. And for once, the in-ring action was actually very solid, with the title match going over 10 minutes for a change. Match-for-match, I doubt we'll find anything better until Feb 2000.
  6. This won’t happen, but a Network collection would be amazing. RIP

  8. Picking up at the end of 1981 to coincide with my Mid South on the Network walkthrough. 12/19 has a cool Jesse Ventura squash with a green Curt Hennig selling like he was bloodied by Dick Murdoch. Blassie even gets a shot in. Afterwards Jesse pushes himself as the "bodyguard" of The Rolling Stones and that he's dating Stevie Nicks in an entertaining promo that cuts out as Blassie brags about knowing Mick Jagger on a first name basis.
  9. I'll go to bat for Dustin in 1994. The work in the feud with Col. Parker alone would take him there, but then you've got the Vader series on top of it. Shame we never got a long PPV match with Flair.

  11. https://70s-tv.com/memphis-wrestling-umatic-masters-series-volume-7/ It's been out there for a few years. Also on Goodhelmet's Lawler set.
  12. Rude's 1992 could be up there with the very best years of the top tier GWE winners. He was very good throughout his entire WWF run and even before that, but everything came together during the Dangerous Alliance angle and he was able to have one of those career-defining runs. Hogan was consistent throughout his first WWF run, even if he didn't have one single standout year. I'd probably go to bat for 1991 if pressed today. The Desert Storm Match is maybe his very best match as WWF Champion and the previously unreleased Flair match is very good as well. It's not a strong case and I'm sure there's a stronger year somewhere in the 80's. We tend to focus so immensely on in-ring work that it's easy to overlook Jake Roberts' character work in late 1991, both as a sympathetic babyface who lost his pet and later as a nightmarish heel who will terrorize you with his pets. Black-Glove-Cobra-handler Jake is a heel character unlike almost anything else in wrestling history, to the point where you could compare the run to some of the very best Hollywood villains. It was all over far too quickly, but man, what's there is just pure gold on every level. Rey is always on point unless he's recovering from an injury, but I'll take 1996 WCW Cruiserweight Champion Rey Mysterio Jr. as comfort food. Hansen had the Bullrope and Cage matches from the feud with Colon in 1987, which should make that year a strong candidate. 92 seems like the sweet spot for the Steiners. Anyone else lucky enough to see 2018 Big Poppa Pump? Not his best era tbh!
  13. Yeah, it's pretty slim pickings but you've got the Backlund-Slaughter series and the Texas Death Match with Muraco. Personally, I'm a fan of the Snuka-Muraco Cage Match, so that's my vote.
  14. 12/21/85 they ran a MSC show on Saturday
  15. It was when Rick first released it on DVD a few years ago.

  17. Last few months/discs of 1991 to go and then I *will* force feed myself 1999 so I can finally get on board with PWO2K.
  18. Check your PMs.
  19. Are there any really strong Duane Johnson performances where he sort of surpasses expectations? The closest I can think of is Southland Tales, which wasn't exactly my cup of tea but Rock was entertaining enough.
  20. This is all we know of the card so far: 2/22/81 Dallas (Reunion Arena) Kevin & David Von Erich defeated Hercules Ayala & Ali Mustafa to win World Tag titles Bruiser Brody defeated Chan Chung
  21. Welp, this sure feels like an epic swan song.
  22. yeah I'm CST so I never figured this would start as early as 6pm here ric and cole is incredible so far tho
  23. I also really enjoyed his promos as a kid, since they provided a wildman contrast to Bret's contained athletic confidence. Always thought Jim was underutilized in a sense because of his height but by the 90's it was pretty clear that ring work didn't click with him. That being said, Anvil was perfect in the early days under Watts' tutelage, being pushed as a serious athlete due to his success in track-and-field. Strongest recommendation to check out: Mr. Wrestling II & Magnum T.A. vs. Butch Reed & Jim Neidhart (Cage Match) (12/25/83) (finished 9th on the DVDVR Mid South poll) Jim Neidhart & Rick Rude vs. Eddie Gilbert & Tommy Rich (Memphis 5/5/1984) Hart Foundation vs. Demolition (WWF Summerslam) (8/29/1988) Hart Foundation vs. Brain Busters (WWF Summerslam) (8/28/1989) Hart Foundation vs. Team USA (WWF In Your House: Canadian Stampede) (7/6/1997)
