Steve "Mongo" McMichael - Is he the best of the worst?
dawho5 replied to KawadaSmile's topic in The Microscope
After watching a lot of those clips I have to say he had his good points. He definitely went out of his way to bump for some guys. Sometimes comedically over-the-top, but he was putting the effort in. Also when he was having stiff brawls with Finlay or Meng I could see some potential in him as a guy who came in for shots in a Southern territory in the 80s. Obviously he'd have needed to be more polished, but he had the intensity and the willingness to put his body on the line. I guess we don't really take into account that most of the wrestling we see on TV is done by guys with a TON of experience in the ring in front of fans. When you see a guy like Mongo learning as he goes and obviously struggling to keep up at points it drives that home. If he'd have come in after 5 years in the business I really think we'd be having a different conversation. As it is, I think all of us enjoy some of the more "wrestlecrap" moments now and again. -
You know what, now that I go back over some of it the Andy Diggle run ended really well on Hellblazer. That seemed like it should have been the ending for the character as a whole to me, as much as I love Constantine. The Books of Magic and Trenchcoat Brigade are must-reads if you like Constantine.

Hellblazer is great, but I thought it went downhill after Jamie Delano and Garth Ennis. I thought the Delano arc was the best, with a lot more "see how cool Constantine is" stuff thrown in by later authors. Admittedly over some great story arcs, but the first run was the most consistent.

I wanted more out of this. So few times this kind of talent has been in the ring together and it just...fizzled.

Weird hearing JR on the WWF call at this point.

I LOVED this. Flair is sounding more and more like the old Flair and it is great.

Cornette throwing the tantrum was incredible. Bob and Corny really work well together and i am looking forward to watching them squabble.

I loved using the "cock-a-roach" line. And the way he delivered the "kick your face in the sand!" Great stuff.

Loved the promo. I am in agreement with Loss that Bossman was too good for the way he was treated. Was it because he wasn't a bit-time superstar, just a mid-level guy who could make anything work for guys on the way up? I'd figure that was a valuable thing to have.

Not great wrestling. But that crowd...wow.

It looked like the ref was saying that Lizmark's arm was keeping Satanico's shoulders off the mat. Too bad the slow mo replay showed him counting Lizmark out when his shoulder was up well before the ref's hand hit. Satanico is amazing and I liked this match a lot. I really dug the focus on Satanico's back as a way to stay ahead by Lizmark.

Not great match, but three things stood out positively for me. Hansen has a brutal running crossbody. They did make Ace look smart in not eating the Hansen lariat. If you are in front of it you are in the danger zone and him knowing that is a positive. And that look Hansen got on his face after the first lariat missed was amazing.

This is right up my alley. The legwork makes a ton of sense as the one thing your opponent leaves open when going after your legs are their own. Please tell me there are more matches from these 2 on tape?

I think a part of the problem is MVC going for restholds right in the middle of the big finishing sequence. Then again, they seem to like their restholds.

Crowd was not super into Vader right away. I like Sting giving Vader a bunch of offense to make him credible before the shine. I loved this match as David vs. Goliath, with David getting a little too ambitious for his own good when he had Goliath on the ropes. Awesome stuff and probably my MOTY so far.

I was a huge fan of Austin in this match too. He's a power wrestler who bumps like a junior and shows good technique. It's kind of a ridiculous combination. The match does get slow in spots, but that may be due to the time they give it. Great shine, great heat, the crowd ate up the hot tag and really got behind Dustin. Maybe not the best these guys had, but they were wrestling later on the show too.

Pillman looked super off here. He just was out of position or not paying attention about 33% of the time he was in the ring. Sleeze and I are 100% in agreement on Liger/Steamer. I was hoping and praying they had a singles match on tape somewhere because it looks like it would be AMAZING. I thought Koloff did well, especially against Liger. Oddly, Koloff was more entertaining than Pillman for most of this. Still a fun match that has great stuff in between the question marks. The interview with Watts was fine. At least we know, even if it is stupid.

Great video for Savage. Loved the slo-mo elbow drops.

If you're going to build a monster, I would say this is the way to do it. Silver looked like he was trying to salvage his pride after that beating he took for a bit there and I wondered how wise that was. But it did work out in the end.

Impressive footage of Ronnie for sure, but it was obviously really old. Despite that, I love having somebody on the babyface side who not only can even the odds against the likes of DWB and Orndorff, but is more than willing to play dirty right back.

I don't know about better than the Kroffat/Furnas match. I love that match a lot. This one is right up there though. Fuchi is amazing in that he rarely does anything that is spectacular at all, but he's so good at everything he does you don't even notice. Kikuchi really brought it in this match and I loved the staredown with Fuchi. I know Kikuchi didn't get many wins over Fuchi, so I am always stoked when I watch one.
