Good enough match for most circumstances, but not these. Maybe Barry was a little pissed about having to do the job here. I think they did pick it up a lot at the end and the crowd did respond to Luger winning. Not sure anybody in the audience cared about the whole Race/Hughes deal. And I'm not sure J.R. even knew that Hughes was no longer with the York Foundation. Way too much happening with no explanation.

So can we say after this match that Robert Gibson was pretty good at...playing...Ricky..Morton? Because he is actually pretty good at it. Morton pulls off being a heel very well. Crowd does give them enough respect to not chant during the match. Tony and J.R. do great with the one worthwhile match on the card, makes sense. Just wish the crowd had been as into this as they should have been.

I'd call this a mess, but that would be giving it too much credit. Was there anything leading up to this match besides Austin beating Eaton for the TV title?

Not as epic as their 1990 matches for sure. There is something to garreta's statement that these two deserve credit for working a different match though. Different rules, less time...if they try to keep doing what they have been doing it is going to fail miserably. For two guys as young as they are to see this and adapt is pretty telling that there are some ring smarts there. Waltman's seriously insane dive is incredible and they do stuff that would be cutting edge anywhere in the world in between all the more traditional wrestling all match. I'm really glad this footage still exists. Imagine if WCW had actually gone with their LHW division seriously and brought in these guys and some Japanese talent in 1991/92.

Yup, that's how I book all my TV. If it's on there it should either be building a guy up or moving one of the feuds forward. One thing about TV in the 80s is that it was very focused on getting you to the house shows, the big shows to see the matches that meant something.

Great build-up to Starrcade on your first show. I like putting Houston and Taylor together right away. Sam Houston seems to be getting a much better push wherever he ends up than he ever did in the real world.

I liked the house shows, but for me the highlight was TV. Killer Khan lives up to the name, JAKE shows up and acts all mysterious and BOCK is going to be Orndorff's new challenger? If I'm watching this in real time that's all very exciting stuff.

I just like seeing the Moondogs, period. Piper showing up on the TV was great and very well-written. Black Bart can't even beat a midcard guy like Tonga Kid without cheating, that's the mark of a truly despicable heel. -
That is a huge SNME card. Bundy coming back to work for Heenan can't mean good things for anyone on the face side. Billy Jack should be a fun addition to your roster as well.

WWC adds Eliud Gonzalez (ring announcer), Hector Moyano (announcer/interviewer) and Don Kent.

Great segment! Leatherface has really grown on me since he started showing up. Even Lawler isn't afraid to scurry away when he's swinging the chainsaw around. Two straight weeks of crazy brawls at the end of the show. What I really want now is a 7 on 7 Texas vs. Tennessee concession stand brawl.

I agree that we all know the conclusion. But Marlin pretty much lets us know that he's clued in to that with his retorts to Embry. Embry is absolutely brilliant in this promo.

Savage is so great. He manages to stay in the Macho Man character and be a part of all this silliness so smoothly.
-
Garvin was still going really strong in 1991! He looked more energetic and in slightly better shape than his 88 match with Colon to me. Invader 1 is really good at selling and gaining sympathy through that and this match plays to that strength a lot. I just wish he'd had more time on offense before the heart punch.

I would have liked to hear Herd apologize for the huge mess that WCW had become on his watch and quit. But I guess this will do.

Brown and Michael dodging around when the action came their way was awesome. That they didn't run off and still had smiles on their faces was, as mentioned above, even better. Incredible studio brawl, I love Memphis!

Embry does really well with this and hits all the right notes. He should be complaining about that lumberjack match. On a side note, I had the album that Pop Goes the Weasel came off of as a 14 year old boy.

I got two tag teams that had good runs in PR and the one native guy in the draft, TNT. I'm gonna call it a success.
