I like the combination of young guys and more established names in the battle royal.

Ricky Steamboat vs. Rick Steiner is actually a genius feud. Instead of turning Steamboat into "The Dragon" or some goofy shit, you put him with a guy who he can use his credentials against to their fullest.

The Universal Wrestling Federation - International

Yoji Anjo vs. Adrian Street would be a fun match. Akiyama as an energetic rookie is gonna have troubles with Albright. Malenkos vs. Brits seems like it could be really, really good. -
Good enough match for Pillman changing his style to not be such a dead giveaway and Austin being really green. Too bad WCW didn't get the memo about the entrance music. I liked Austin using the pitch through the second rope manuever when Pillman charged in. Seemed like a more veteran move, especially when you're dealing with time limits and being a heel champ. Larry Z on commentary was spectacular. His embracing of the stall tactics is such a Larry thing to do, and it makes a ton of sense.

The proposal was clearly a poor imitation, but I can ignore that. Especially with a great brawl like this. That's what, 3 awesome studio brawls in a month? One thing I do like about Tojo showing up all the time is the loyalty. He's a guy who made the territory money when he was working and too often guys like that just get cut loose in wrestling. It's nice to see Jarrett showing his appreciation for the work Tojo put in and keeping him employed.

Evansville. That's where. Cheesy Memphis music videos hit a soft spot for me, so I liked it.

So what is more grating, the endless WCW Black Bart/Dutch vignettes or these endless WWF vignettes that seemingly have nothing to do with wrestling. Also, why do all of these people with other professions have need of a wrestling career so badly? Is skinning not as profitable as Keirns had hoped?

Jake again kills it with his promo. It's definitely over the top and stupid, but Jake has this magic way of making everything work because he always seems to understand exactly who his character is and how that fits the circumstances.

I think it is up to the individual posters to make the board what they want. Let's say you want a more detailed analysis of a single worker in 2017. The tags would help you locate all of the match threads created. You could conceivably start a post in The Microscope and go through matches chronologically using the MDA, even linking the threads for the matches you are discussing in the appropriate places. This could apply to promotions, champions, periods of time from when we start to have footage to now, whatever. It's more a matter of using the different areas of the board in conjunction. It requires some homework on the part of the people posting, but my guess is that is actually a part of what is missing for the people who don't care for just using the MDA. Most of what Loss would call the "more intuitive" stuff is going to be personal projects that people embark on to chronicle, let's say changes in the way matches were worked in Portland as the 1980s go on or whatever it may be. The more in-depth projects that can use the resource of all of the match threads, but use those threads in the context of a larger perspective than just the individual matches. There is no way to force that way of posting on anyone, just as there is no way to force the MDA on anyone if it doesn't work to their tastes. One of the other things brought up is not having the same arguments with a new generation of posters. I absolutely get that. If I've already had an argument about something a few times I am pretty well done with it when it comes to people I talk to. I just don't want to get into it and make the same points to yet another person. But the problem with that issue is that if you want to go into these detailed overviews of wrestling over time, those same arguments will come up. Maybe with some new perspectives, maybe not. It's going to be a part of the process and something you have to go through to get what you want from posting the way you want. I will say that for me, watching the Yearbooks 3-6 matches a day is a really fun way of watching wrestling. I like seeing the different ways that promotions try to get their narratives across and how I react to them. I'm becoming a big fan of guys like Foley, Austin and Pillman because I get to see them at fairly early stages of their career and see them move forward. I'd like to say the same for Luger and Sting, but a lot of the fun of watching them try and improve is sucked out of the matches by the shit way they are presented by WCW. And I will say that there are more than a few topics that i could really dig in on just from that aspect of it alone if I wanted to do a deeper dive into any one aspect of what I've watched so far. The main point I wanted to make here is that board technology does not limit anyone from making themselves a project and posting about it. I did that massively long AJPW 90s project with one thread. It would have been better with the MDA and me going through and pulling highlights from other people's reviews of the match from the MDA. But the board is what it has always been. It is a tool we all use for what we want. If you find yourself not using it, ask yourself what you want to use it for and do that.

NWA World Class Championship Wrestling December 1985

Who else thinks Wrestling II vs. Funk would be an absolute blast? I would go out on a limb and say slapping the Moondogs is a huge mistake anytime, anywhere. -
That seemed like the talking points from a Flair promo if I ever heard one. Finish for the main is great and the final piece in setting up BR vs. BR. Michaels going almost an hour in 85 is an interesting choice.

Yeah, this seemed like a waste of the six wrestlers. They built to something that never happened. Very little comedy. Dive train was awesome and Porky landing on his feet after that dive was super impressive. Beyond that, not much to see here. I always love the energy Super Porky comes into the ring with when he does the footwork like he's some kind of kung fu guy though. Whatever it is about it I mark out every time I see it.

Match is perfectly fine for AJPW around this time. Late 1990-early 1994 are to me, the peak years for All Japan as far as in-ring goes. And it is still one of my favorite wrestling styles ever. Jumbo destroying Kikuchi is ridiculous kinds of fun no matter how much I see it. The 4 backdrop drivers I think officially start the need to practically murder Misawa to get a pin on him. Which may have had a hand in later problems Misawa had just a little bit. Good match and I always love the trips back to AJPW, but it's nice to have other promotions in there to spice it up. Keeps things more fresh than watching 6-man after 6-man with a lot of the same themes.

Foley is starting to look like Foley. And act like it. Who was that masked man in the main?
-
Creatchman needs to learn to hand the money out backstage. Much less incriminating.

I thought Suzuki was more active through the second half of the bout by far and Sano was blown up. If that's him selling then kudos, because he looked like a guy who was out of breath. Not a knock on Sano or the match. It was well-worked for a 30 minute draw shootstyle match. Suzuki did a great job of carrying the later portions and giving Sano the time he needed to recover. Sano, to his credit, put the effort forth when it was needed. It just looked to me like he was gassed. It actually added to the match in a lot of ways.

I guess if wrestling in front of dead crowds is a sign you're doing things right, the MVCs way of building matches is awesome. Do they not notice it? Anyway, the work on Misawa's leg actually had direction. Not that it made me want to wake up after 10 minutes of MVC laziness. Finish was fine, but MVCs again took way too much of it.

I'd agree this was a lot of fun. Super fast paced and all action with weird matchups you never expected to see. The TNT/Hashimoto matchup was a lot of fun I thought. Everybody had their time to shine in this and while I wouldn't say it was a ***** classic, I'd say it was damn worth the 20 minutes watching it. That felt maybe like ten.

Little tip for Southern referees. When you suspect somebody is hiding something, check the hands AND the trunks all at the same time. Crazy idea, might work though. Perfectly normal "please go see the big match" match. Embry with all the stalling and cheating we expect and want Lawler to punish him for, Lawler with the comeback and an unsatisfying end. When both of these guys decide to go it's great, but this was not it.

I'm not sure Tunney could have been as convincing as Vince was. Kudos to Vince for sounding like he means it even a little. Also, kudos to Vince for the unintentional humor. Was laughing my way through this whole thing. I'm sure it would be great if all sports had drug testing like the WWF in 1991!

I liked this a lot. I didn't love it, but man once it really gets rolling Hash and Vader bring the goods. Maybe it's the slow beginning that makes it seem like less than a classic. Also, it seems like NJPW is still putting Vader over as a monster. I'm not sure if Hash has been in a lot of matches to this point where 75% or more of the early offense belongs to the opponent. I can cut him a little slack for having to work different than he's used to.

So was this put on last for strategic reasons? Maybe the crowd is shitting all over Flair not being there all night, so Dusty as this ingenious plan to put THIS....i'm not sure there are words bad enough...this...thing worse than every Bull Drop Inn episode combined after the title match so people think the title match is better by comparison? It's the only logical reason for it's placement that I can think of. On to my issues with it. 1. Rick just watches as Missy is kidnapped. I'm ignoring Missy's hair dyed to match Rick's I assume. That Rick Steiner is a class guy, not doing a damn thing as his tag team partner is carted off by the guys who INJURED HIS BROTHER! So we're painting him as a coward and a terrible partner. Good. We did get to see Murdoch almost punch some teenaged kid, so there was one positive. 2. Arn is knocked silly for HOW long by a clothesline? I get he's Rick Steiner and he has that "my-last-name-is-in-front-of-my-clothesline" thing going, but really? I'm at the point where I dread WCW coming up and would rather see joshi.
