[1990-10-20-USWA-Memphis TV] Interview: Dirty White Boy & Doug Gilbert
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in October 1990
Dave Brown has been under the radar for me since his peak early in the year, but he came back in a big way here. Great reactions. -
This was really cool. I love that EMLL has been doing these little cultural features like this. Felt like a PBS segment or something, really interesting and I've wondered before how they make the masks. Now I know!

Whoa Billy Jack looks very different here. I can't help but shiver when I hear a promo of his, I'm just constantly reminded of his "super shoot."

[1990-10-29-UWF-TV] Steve Williams vs Paul Orndorff
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in October 1990
The UWF has been really dry, but this was the best thing from it so far. Decent match, not a lot to it and pretty short, but Orndorff and Doc were working well. I know they had ppvs so I'm curious what those looked like.- 8 replies

[1990-10-27-NWA-Halloween Havoc] Rick & Scott Steiner vs Nasty Boys
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in October 1990
I've seen this match several times at this point, and never thought much of it, but I thoroughly enjoyed it this time around. I think the Midnight Express match better, but this is a cool match. The crowd losing their minds during the opening and then settling down into a straight forward match is very good. I've been more impressed with the Steiners than ever before. -
I really enjoyed the lack of commentary on this. I don't know if I've ever seen a WWF/E match without it, and it definitely adds a different dimension to the match. I don't know, usually botches don't bother me much, but for whatever reason the Bret stuff in the third fall really brought this down for me as well. And honestly, that may have to do with the people involved. If Beautiful Bobby had made the same mistakes I would probably be arguing it works in storyline as fatigue or something. I'll be watching this one again, as I'm trying to do with a lot of the stuff I didn't like initially.

[1990-10-27-NWA-Halloween Havoc] Ric Flair & Arn Anderson vs Doom
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in October 1990
Maybe the best Doom match of all time? Simmons especially looks good here, good facial expressions and he's a good face in peril. The power house offense works well against Arn and Flair. always like stooging for big power guys. Flair is an underrated tag worker for sure, and moved around the ring well and was good at cutting Simmons off. -
Very sentimental match for me. I love this one so much. The opening sequence between Ricky and Bobby with the crisscross rope running is really well done, Bobby hits all the coolest offense you can imagine, the crowd goes wild for the rocket launcher onto the ramp. When I watched this when I was little I didn't know it was the end for the MX or anything like that, but watching it now it really does feel like a kind of curtain call.

[1990-10-27-WWF-Superstars] Brother Love: Jake Roberts & Rick Martel
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in October 1990
Another good heel promo from Martel, just totally smarmy and pandering. Jake is selling this so well, being led out to the ring, and another reveal of the eye is just as gruesome. Between this and the Slaughter angle, this really sets the stage for what I've heard is a pretty dark 1991 for WWF, which I'm very much looking forward to. -
[1990-10-27-USWA-Memphis TV] Interview: Bill Dundee / Jamie Dundee promo
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in October 1990
Bill is usually really cool and collected which really makes this fired up revenge promo great. I really like this. The pixelating of the blood and the injury is a great touch too, as it looks super brutal obscured like that. Jamie Dundee seems to really be taking a beating so far, and I guess all of the injuries are worked? He looks terrible. -
[1990-10-27-USWA-Memphis TV] Jeff Jarrett vs Danny Davis
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in October 1990
Bizarre moment when Danny Davis says this match will "please him like he's never been pleased before." I like this match a lot. a good TV match and the more technical style was a good change of pace for me. -
[1990-10-27-WWF-Superstars] Update: Rick Rude suspended indefinitely!
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in October 1990
Ahhh this is a bummer. I was looking forward to Rude vs. Boss Man.- 13 replies

Kung Fu seems like a really budget gimmick name. Anyway, this looked pretty good from what we saw, but I don't have a lot to comment on. Atlantis seemed really aggressive and fired up, so that's cool.

[1990-10-25-UWF-Atlantis] Akira Maeda vs Masakatsu Funaki
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in October 1990
This match is a victim of coming on right after the Fujiwara/Takada match. i was still on a high from that, and this didn't hit the same mark for me. I might need to watch this one again, because it was really good, I just wasn't invested. The strike exchanges were fast and brutal, Funaki had tons of energy, Maeda played the veteran role well.- 19 replies

The DQ finishes really worked for me. I don't think I've seen a DQ finish in lucha yet, and I guess I kind of assumed they didn't really exist since the refs are so lenient in the trios matches, so I thought this was really cool. This was a pretty straight forward bloody, awesome brawl. El Dandy is so impressive when comparing his performances throughout the year. I've heard for a long time now that El Dandy was the best wrestler in 1990, so I was excited to see for myself, and it's no joke. I'd say this was below the Azteca match, but not by much.

[1990-10-25-UWF-Atlantis] Nobuhiko Takada vs Yoshiaki Fujiwara
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in October 1990
This is definitely better than the February match. I kind of hold the 7/24/89 Fujiwara/Yamazaki match as the gold standard for this era, but this might be better. Fujiwara is so conniving here, always luring Takada into different situations, always with a smile on his face. I didn't participate in GWE, but I was reading something, maybe the reaction thread, and someone was talking about how fake Fujiwara's headbutts look. Clearly that person had only seen the pro wrestling stuff. Very good headbutts here, right from the start. Takada's selling on the knock downs is so great. Great finish too, Takada finally wises up to Fujiwara's tricks and catches him for a TKO! Top 5 match for me for the year.- 18 replies

[1990-10-13-WWF-Saturday Night's Main Event] Oktoberfest!

Bret looks like such a stiff here. This was a really good segment, tons of fun. Feels really nostalgic. -

[1990-10-22-UWF-TV] Captain Lou's Corner: Andre the Giant
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in October 1990
Didn't know this happened. Andre looks slightly out of context in such a small arena, but I absolutely did not know this was coming.- 8 replies

[1990-10-20-USWA-Memphis TV] Interview: Bill & Jamie Dundee
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in October 1990
Cameras and Dave Brown capture a wonderful father & son moment between the Dundees. Little Jamie finally has his father's blessings to start making his own decisions. I'm hoping he takes his father's advice and only spends time with slow women.
