[1990-10-06-USWA-Memphis TV] Interview: Eddie Gilbert & Dick Slater
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in October 1990
Awesome visual here. Good promo, but a great looking image. -
[1990-10-06-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] WCW Top Ten
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in October 1990
I'm trying to remember the kayfabe rules for the rankings, and obviously there weren't ever any real rules, but I seem to remember whenever the champ(s) would lose, they would drop to like 5 or 6, which might explain why the Midnights are low at this point, as they had lost the US titles, well, in August, that was a bit ago now. -
Totally absurd. If they just had the Black Scorpion as someone in a mask with some kind of mouthpiece, Sir Oliver Humperdink or someone, and claim to be someone from Sting's past, and the whole thing is just fine. The Dio druid robes and the voices and fog, and magic tricks and space ship is not fine.

[1990-10-07-AJPW] Abdullah the Butcher on the tour bus
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in October 1990
Rare video footage of Stan Hansen in his glasses! Abdullah just sitting there waiting to complain was very funny. I can't imagine what context this was shown in. Odd. -
[1990-10-06-USWA-Memphis TV] Eddie Marlin and Jerry Lawler
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in October 1990
Good presentation of the tournament. Eddie Marlin is very proud of that belt. I like Lawler in a suit here. I'm more excited about the tournament than I was before. I was actually kind of skeptical about how serious it was going to be or if it was going to be tv matches or what. Good looking lineup too. -
This felt the most heated that Jumbo has been, with the possible exception of the May 6 man. He had a different aura here though, not quite as reckless, but more mean. Everyone else has nailed the particulars, but I wanted to mention I really enjoyed the tags. Like the physical movements made in order to tag each partner I thought were really good. Kawada especially, there were a couple times where he was falling over himself after taking a move, flailing to make a tag. Taue stood out here in a big way, I think for the first time this year.

I wonder about the decision to have Scott Steiner win the gauntlet the first time they did it. I can see it as a way to kind of put a bit of shine on the concept itself, but it seems like it's something that could be saved for a pretty big moment. Like you've got to tune in to see if this weekend will finally be the time someone wins the gauntlet. One the other hand, it makes it feel a bit more unpredictable, like really anyone could win it. I'd be curious to look at all gauntlet runners and see how many people actually won it at the end.

Okay, so here we go. I know this is the big feud of the fall, I'm glad we got to see the start of it.

[1990-09-05-NWA-Clash of the Champions XII] Ric Flair vs Lex Luger
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in September 1990
I really liked seeing these two work at a fast pace and work the match like a US Title match. The crowd was super hot and really this showed up the main event. I actually think these kind of matches is where Flair's typical spots work really well. It's exactly what the crowd wants to see, and it's in a compact, hot match. -
[1990-09-28-NWA-Power Hour] Bobby Eaton vs Tracy Smothers
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in September 1990
I'd say this one was below the Steiner match, but still good and I think I liked it more than Eaton/Morton. I was very worried when Smothers started climbing the ropes, but hey, it all worked out in the end. -
I've liked the progression of tag matches between Kobashi and Ace. Kind of a cool little trilogy to watch. Anyway, Kawada is now officially Kawada, and he seems like just the tights have made him better. I'm seeing s lot of the viciousness I'm familiar with. Misawa actually stands out the least to me here, because I was pretty impressed by Johnny Ace. He was clearly the worst man in the ring, but he really worked hard and those to the occasion I thought. He had some good dropkicks and a nice hot tag. This didn't feel like a big time match, but was super hot and a good match.

[1990-09-21-EMLL] Rayo de Jalisco Jr vs Cien Caras (Mask vs Mask)
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in September 1990
Oh man that strut after the guitar shot was so good. Insane atmosphere for this. Interesting that the first two falls were fairly quick, leading to a longer third fall with great nearfalls. I've never seen a real mask match before so I don't know if this is typical but the fans rushing up to the ring after the third fall to see the unmasking and Cien Caras really heeling it up when taking the mask off was really good.- 12 replies

I was confused when Konnam was listed as a technico because I thought he turned last match, and it looks like he's having trouble with his partners, I liked the brawling here, there's hasn't been a lot of lucha brawling so far.

So this is one of the big reasons why I started diving into the yearbooks: to get WCW tv matches, and even more specifically, gauntlet matches. This is my favorite one so far. Eaton is really on here. Great bumps, good looking offense as usual when he's on top, but didn't overshadow Steiners power moves. Awesome match.

I'm interested why this wasn't quite as good as maybe it should have been. Both knew how to work singles matches and were very good at them. Didn't quite live up to my expectations but it was still good. More methodical than I was expecting but a good match and I'm glad it got the time it got. Really interested to see Eaton vs Sid now.

[1990-09-28-NWA-Power Hour] Louisville Slugger: Theodore R. Long
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in September 1990
Good simple storyline and a good setup yo the Havoc match. Teddy Long has been good in these.
