[1990-09-03-Iowa Ringside] 'Mr Ugly' Contest (feat. Ox Baker)
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in September 1990
I'm very thankful we didn't get Mr. Frenchy in person. I think the sadness would have been too much for me to bear.- 9 replies

[1990-09-14-NJPW] Big Van Vader vs Shinya Hashimoto
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in September 1990
This felt like it was the first step in a longer feud, and by reading the comments I'm led to believe that we'll get another match next year, which is great. Definitely felt like they held back for this one, but it was still good. -
Cool braids shot of Cactus and him as a highlight reel at this point looks really "wild" and dangerous. The Cactus clothesline especially looks really out of control. I guess at this point Cactus really works best in this situation, just shots of him doing insane things.

[1990-09-08-USWA-Memphis TV] Eddie Gilbert and Dirty White Boy promo
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in September 1990
Big bummer here. Total lowest common denominator stuff that honestly kind of lessens the impact of the Snowman stuff. Too bad. -
Of course this is silly and bad and whatever else, but theoretically, if they had just done this as an experiment or something to give Sting a feud for a Clash, I think it's a much more interesting feud than if they did a throwaway title defense with a random heel (I can't even think of who's a believable title challenger heel at this point, Butch Reed maybe?) but the fact that this went all the way to the end of the year AND there was no actual resolution for it is the really disappointing part.

[1990-09-01-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] Black Scorpion promo
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in September 1990
I remember hearing an interview with Ole where he laughed about the Black Scorpion thing and did the voice. It came off like he had planned it to be a joke the whole time. I don't know if it's worse if that's the truth or if he thought it was actually a good idea at the time. -
[1990-09-01-AJW] Aja Kong vs Bull Nakano (Cage)
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in September 1990
I didn't know there were escape rules until the finish. I thought Aja Kong was climbing up to pull a Jimmy Snuka and then she just won. Very anti-climatic. I didn't care too much for the match overall, but I did like Bull's leg being worked on by cutting it with the box thing. I don't think I've ever seen that before.- 12 replies

I actually really liked the finish of this. Tenryu just beat Takagi in a corner until he couldn't continue. Great shots of Takagi's battered face, awesome match.

[1990-09-08-USWA-Championship Sports] Chris Adams vs Skull Jones
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in September 1990
Skull's gear has some proto-Stone Cold elements to it. So this is the last of not only last televised segment of Austin/Adams but of the whole promotion for the year? Kind of bitter sweet. I've said before that I was experiencing some fatigue with both this and Memphis, but especially this promotion. But now that the end has come, I just don't know how to feel.- 8 replies

I like these Fantastics matches because they provide something that I'm not really used to seeing in All Japan. Outside of the tag league, it's mostly big heavyweight tags and singles matches that I'm familiar with, and this feels more like "normal" tag match. Sure Kobashi is in it but it doesn't feel like a huge dramatic event. This was better than the previous match, and the match ups and roles being played were really cool. Kobashi and Rogers as the guys kind of carrying the match, with Ace and Fulton supplementing with the brawling and a different pace. Also, Johnny Ace had a cool drop kick/double team thing early on.

The springboard spot was botched, definitely, but Rogers is right there in the ring waiting for Kikuchi, and it almost comes off like he scares him or something, and like Kikuchi gets intimidated off the ropes and on to the floor. Really interesting comment above about how RnR couldn't have worked this match. It's not really working heel, it's not vicious or stiff, but there's like a certain strength or power they're working with. I don't know, I can't really articulate it, but I agree. They come off as serious competitors in a fight, and less like pro wrestlers maybe?

[1990-09-01-WWF-Superstars] Brother Love: Rick Martel
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in September 1990
For once I actually know where this is going with the eye stuff. those novelty perfume spray things are such a classic prop, always funny. Rick is looking extra slick with that ponytail too, good promo. -
Agree with everyone else here, I liked this more than the June match. June had the surprise and the emotion, but this told a better story I think. Misawa looks more like his equal throughout the first part of the match, I lost it for the pin reversal, and then Jumbo just goes off. The exhaustion towards the end of the match was excellent, whether it was intentional or not. Them kind of falling on each other was awesome. What a match.

[1990-08-31-AJPW-Summer Action Series II] Jumbo Tsuruta vs Kenta Kobashi
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in August 1990
Very solid match. The dynamic of the match, and the whole feud, is perfect for me, and Jumbo plays his role so well here. Kobashi looked very good, maybe the best he's looked so far? I don't want to take anything away from Kobashi because he was great here, but Jumbo really impressed me, perfect amounts of give and take here.- 10 replies

[1990-08-31-NWA-Power Hour] Interview: Ric Flair
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in August 1990
Another solid Flair promo. I'm all in on this match. -
Great promo by Dusty. Is this his most serious promo in WWF? All the dancing and jiving is gone and he's feeling it. The other promos are pretty standard, Warrior still looks strange to me. Earthquake has a gnarly welt or cut or something on his back, you could see it at the end of the Hogan match but it looks really gruesome here. I really like that they had these segments before the main event, it give it a bit of a big time feel and kind of sets it apart from the rest of the card.
