    Matches of the month

Well, that's a wrap for 1991! I was a little surprised to find that I enjoyed 1991 more than 1990. But, since I started it in May and I'm already finished, I guess that would be an understatement. With December, my favorite match and moment was Jake Roberts vs. Macho Man at Tuesday in Texas. I'm including the match, the Liz angle, and the promos. I hadn't seen all that in full, or chronologically in so long. I was pretty floored by the whole thing. It's my feud of the year easy. So, my favorites from December look like this: 1. Randy Savage vs. Jake Roberts - 12/03/1991 2. El Hijo del Santo & Black Shadow Jr. vs. Fuerza Guerrera & Octagon - 12/15/1991 3. Hulk Hogan vs. Tenryu - 12/12/1991 4. Jushin Liger vs. Brian Pillman - 12/27/1991 5. Ricky Steamboat vs. Steve Austin - 12/21/1991 Match of the Year: Randy Savage vs. Ultimate Warrior - 03/24/1991 MVP of 1991: Randy Savage My Top 10 favorite matches of 1991: 1. Randy Savage vs. Ultimate Warrior @ 7 (The entire moment) 2. Misawa, Kawada, & Kobashi vs. Jumbo, Taue, & Fuchi - 04/20/1991 3. The Enforcers vs. Dustin Rhodes & Ricky Steamboat - 11/19/1991 4. War Games 1991 5. Taue vs. Kawada 01/15/1991 6. El Hijo del Santo vs. Negro Casas - 05/17/1991 7. Stan Hansen vs. Kenta Kobashi - 09/04/1991 8. Masa Chono vs. Shinya Hashimoto - 08/09/1991 9. Vader vs. Keiji Muto - 08/10/1991 10. Chono vs. Muto - 08/11/1991 It's hard to rank the Roberts/Savage match from Tuesday in Texas. But, I think that's the most memorable and favorite match/angle for me. I'd have to think about where I'd put it in the top 10. I think it would edge some of those out because the performances are so good. Shout out to Rockers vs. The Orient Express, as that will always be a personal favorite of mine that I've loved since childhood. And, shout out to Savage and Roberts for cutting the best promos of the year. 1991 is packed with the goods. I know there is a discussion about WWF taking a darker turn in 1991, and I can see that. For me, it really worked. I'd give the nod to WWF as my favorite promotion of the year. Really, all the reasons why I talked about as I went through each month. I really can't wait to get to 1992 now. The DA build has me amped. I'm going to take a break from the 90's and dive into Mid-South a bit at this point. But, I'll be going to 1992 soon. I think the biggest drop off for me was Memphis. It had it's moments that reminded me of the 80's and 1990, but there were times it just wasn't as good to me. There was also less lucha knocking it out of the park for this year. I wasn't a huge fan of the Brazos tags. But, damn I loved that Casas match. All Japan and New Japan were both great.
  2. Man... Steamboat ruled this encounter. Just watch his facial expressions and selling of muscle fatigue while he worked that snug headlock on Austin. This should be required viewing for anyone learning how to work a headlock. He's phenomenal. Then watch his facial expressions as he fights off Austin's headlock. The way he sells the back drops and taking a minute to get himself together after he gets out of the headlock... (maybe it was after a lariat, but selling the affects). Austin was fine here, but this was the Steamboat show. I enjoyed it.
  3. garretta was spot on. Those guys that wouldn't stop talking wanted a "5 star plus match," but wanted Liger to hit the shooting star press within 3 minutes or they were going to "deduct half a star." I agree with everything you said garretta, their mindset just kind of stressed me out. I don't know why I let it get on my nerves, and I'll just mute it next time. Anyways... I thought they worked this with great intensity and I would have had so much fun at this live (if I weren't by those guys). I'm on the same page as Sleeze with the match itself. This was really really good. That sounds a little more serious than it was... I was also just kind of laughing wondering what some of the other folks around here were thinking listening to those two...
  4. I'm looking forward to this. It sounds like a lot of fun, and thanks to those working out the kinks!
  5. Put me in the boat with those that won't come back to this. Bizarre seems to be the trending description. The outdoors setting, the extremely quiet crowd, the monotone announcers, the ignoring of the ring, the insane amount of violence - all this was the recipe for something wasn't right for my tastes. Garretta made a good point. Why bother with the ring, and then after all the violence, it's suplexes to a finish? It just doesn't make much sense to me. Bizarre/weird/gross... any of that works for me.
  6. This match and the post-match interviews are probably the highlight of 1991, and I'm with Soup... one of the best things they've (WWF) ever produced. I can't get over how awesome Savage and Jake were here. From the match to the insanely on another level promos at the end... this is as good as it gets.
  7. One of so many examples that illustrates the all-time greatness of Randy Savage. Not only letting the snake attack his arm, but his performance afterwards is just incredible. Throwing those wild punches! So much has been said, so I'll just throw in on the compliments and say I loved this and think it's great. Also, how about the closing fade out!? Jake has this maniacal look on his face and the Snake is up staring at right back at him! It's chilling!
  8. This is one of my favorite all-time Sting moments. He sells the injury so well, and the suspense of him beating the 10-count is awesome. I really enjoy the match with Rude, and he's the perfect character for something like this. Not much to add to what has been described, but I agree with most of the thoughts. This starts what is probably my favorite Sting run (from here through the Cactus and Vader feuds). This is up there with the first Clash (and a few others) as one of the best Clash of the Champions.
  9. Arn Anderson's expressions are so good throughout, but I really love after the reveal, and when he sells the first atomic drop. The way this starts off with a perfect camera angle of Steamboat unloading the fire onto Arn Anderson, who is putting on a selling clinic, man it's just perfect.
  10. Every now and again you're watching wrestling, and something so bad and embarrassing is going on, and you think.. man, I hope my wife doesn't walk in while this is playing. Or, maybe that's just me. Well, this was one of those moments.
  11. This was a great moment. I too love Flair's promo, but Hogan's glare back at Piper is pretty damn awesome. Overall, one of my favorite moments of the year.
  12. The pacing of this match is incredible. They go all at it here, and I loved every moment. Hansen is so good in this. I like how he has to sit on the ropes and catch his breath after going so damn hard in the first portion of the match. This was really great.
  13. I'm agree with those who thought this was pretty great. I love that right hand Hara throws from his knees. It caught Tenryu right on the jaw, and man did it look stiff. As mentioned, the bruise under the arm of Hara was nasty. I thought they both worked hard, and probably had the best match the two of them could have had. The only sort of weak spot is the ending powerbomb, but the action prior was so entertaining to me, it doesn't weigh that heavily. I'll also say it was my favorite Tenryu match of the year thus far.
  14. I ultimately thought this was a great match, but it wouldn't make a MOTYC list for me. I would definitely have Santo/Casas and Santo/Brazo over this one. I thought first two falls were decent, but I got the same feeling as soup in regards to some of Octagon's awkward pacing. I did like some of the heel antics from Guerrera, but I don't know that it carried the first two falls to a great level for me. The third fall had me totally sucked in. There was a great bump from Guerrera where he and Octagon were throwing fatigued (but impactful) punches. Octagon nailed him with a punch, and he bumped to the outside. It really knocked the match into gear for me. The third fall is what took it to the next level for me. You could feel the struggle and the mask ripping was suspenseful.
  15. MSG - Steel Cage -Roddy Piper defeats Rick Rude (w/ Bobby Heenan) This match is so much fun. You have Rick Rude's incredible selling off his bumps into the cage. You have the typical chaotic antics of Piper. You have the Heenan element on the outside swelling the heat. Rude actually drops a knee on Piper from the top of the cage! There are some really great nearfalls produced down the stretch. There is cool spot where Piper and Rude go over the top to escape at the same time, but their feet touch at the exact same time. So, the ref states the match will continue. Rude gets bloodied. It's really exactly what you would hope for as a fan of these two.
  16. I watched it today it thought it was a total blast. I had seen it long ago, but I've been watching the build with all the promos leading up to it. I've really enjoyed all of it.
  17. Thanks! And ha!@Steve Personally, I prefer to watch then listen. But, there have been a few times I listened then watched and was able to skip some of the really bad stuff. So, both times I really enjoyed it. I like the journey, so I like it best with the footage. However, I can honestly say that I think I'd enjoy the show just as much without the footage. Because it will still carry through the story and angles and get me to the next show that I will watch. If that makes sense...
  18. I thought this was awesome! This might be the most memorable episode from Memphis so far in 1991. Of course, Lawler mentions the Cleveland Indian as his favorite autograph. I also thought it was cool that he said he had one of the country stars call his sick friend Faith Hill. I'm guessing this was before she was a big deal and probably just performing locally in Memphis. I'm sure he had a blast at that event. When he pulled out the guitar, my first thought was that it would a great angle if someone were to bust it over his head or something. When the match with Bull started, I was pretty disappointed. Then... it happened and escalated to Lawler in the parking lot with ball bat busting out BJT's car windows! I think some were saying the Embry feud has gotten long in the tooth at this point, and I agree. But, this was pretty great.
  19. Some of things I'd point to are the Roberts feud, Bret Hart 3/8/86 is a good one, and Bob Orton Jr. 7/20/85 is really good. He's got a good Valentine match in 85, and I like his stuff when he came back and faced Jericho in that tag at mania and PPV following... Anyways, I think it's not about his longevity that he ranks so high for me, I just think he always performs exceptionally. In my opinion, he performs at such a high level that he would surpass someone who had a longer career with the company (because in my eyes, they likely never reached his level). Also, the historical significance for the Savage feud is pretty high in my book. That's just some quick reasons. I can probably discuss further when I have a little more time to think about it. For example, you mentioned Christian. Christian will rank highly on my list, so don't get me wrong. I'll just rank Steamboat higher because I think his in-ring work was at a higher level than Christian. I also don't think Christian had any moments that would come close to WrestleMania III. Again, Christian is around 32 or 33 for me (where Steamboat is 20). So, I'm not trashing. I'm just saying what made the difference to me.
  20. This is the first one I haven't been able to find on YouTube or the network... any tips?
  21. I really liked this a lot, and I think I'm pretty much on the same page with Sleeze with it. I've heard some mention of this possibly being Orton's best singles bout in the WWF. I have not seen very much from Orton in a singles capacity, but I do think this was a really solid performance from him. His heel mannerisms were really good, and even though it's not the finish we wanted, he did a great job getting over his disappointment in the DQ finish. DQ finishes made more sense in this timeframe because they pushed that a wrestler that was DQ'd wouldn't get his share of the purse. If a heel gets DQ'd in the WWE currently, they are happy, because they "got away with the title" (if they are a champion). I miss that losing money on a DQ narrative.
  22. I think ZSJ was probably my favorite performer from the weekend. I enjoyed both of his matches the most for the two nights. I'd say this was my favorite match from the weekend as well. Ishii's selling of ZSJ's nasty looking submissions was spot on.
  23. I wish it would have been longer too, but I think they were using this to build to that bigger longer match. If it doesn't lead to that, then that will be disappointing. I think the idea is that Joe was dominating, but Brock caught him off guard and "stunned" him long enough for pin. Now, Brock has stung the bear, and Joe is pissed and he'll force a rematch. I guess it's likely Roman won't be #1 contender after attempted murder, so maybe Joe does get his rematch at SS where they get the long match. The match against Punk is a top 2 Lesnar match ever for me, it's an all-time classic. I hope Joe and Brock get a chance to try and reach that.
  24. Not that they both didn't deliver, but Roman really had a great performance in this match. You're probably right, I can't think of a better ambulance match off the top of my head... These two guys worked their ass off, and this came across as a FIGHT. Loved it.
