  1. The match is mostly dominated by Kensuke who just beats the shit out of KENTA. KENTA sells really well for him & gets some great big comebacks in. A very well told, great Heavyweight vs. Jr. Heavyweight story. ****1/2
  2. The main selling point of this match was the interactions between Danielson & KENTA - and those sure did not disappoint. This was just a really well structured & paced tag match that delivered on all levels. Danielson was absolutely brilliant right from the get go - he established during his entrance when he said that "only Americans deserve to hear the Final Countdown" that he was gonna be a dick in this match. And he sure was one. He was absolutely phenomenal in that, working over Ishimori, going toe-toe-toe with KENTA all the while playing a complete dick to them. KENTA was also great kicking the shit out of Edwards & Edwards was really good at getting the shit kicked out of him. Him & Ishimori really were the supporting actors in this one while Bryan & KENTA were the leading ones. All played their roles perfectly & put on a terrific match. ****1/2
  3. Fun opening in KENTA vs. Nakajima, which was followed by awesome stuff in Kensuke vs. Kobashi. Every Kensuke vs. Kobashi interaction in this match was so BEEFY. Awesome. Loved the Kensuke vs. KENTA interactions too, those were truly awesome. KENTA was a tremendous FIP in his 2 FIP segments. Kobashi was a really good hot tag - loved him just chopping Nakajima around, which lead to a fantastic FIP segment w/ him. And holy shit, was Kensuke's hot tag tremendous or what? ! Seriously one of the best ones I've seen. He just destroyed KENTA there. LOVED Kobashi coming to help KENTA when Kensuke had him in a submission hold. I also thought it was pretty funny how Kensuke German'd his own partner in Nakajima when he was trying to German KENTA lol. Great spot. The little drama in the end w/ Kensuke's arm was wonderful. The finishing stretch between KENTA & Nakajima was a terrific way to close out a fantastic match. Overall this was an outstanding, classic 30 minute draw. Clicked with me big time. ****3/4
  4. A big compliment to this match is that it was over 20 minutes long & it still felt like a sprint. This was a very exciting, fun action packed match with no dull moments whatsoever - fast paced, hard hitting sequences. There were a few moments where they kinda dropped the selling & that hurt the match a bit, but it was still great. ****
  5. I liked the knee work done on KENTA by Marufuji & Ibushi; sure it was filler as it didn't go anywhere & KENTA didn't sell it at all, but it was enjoyable filler. Ibushi's FIP segment was really strong, too. And then of course the whole finishing stretch with all of them, in particular Ibushi, going nuts. I do think they went little bit into the overkill zone w/ all the nearfalls, but this was still really good. ***3/4
  6. Bryan/KENTA III lived up to all the hype. Tremendous atmosphere for a tremendous match - the crowd was super hot for the whole thing & rightfully so. There were some neat callbacks to their previous 2 singles matches like KENTA getting tired of Bryan's mat work & showing that he doesn't want to play that game anymore by slapping the man. Bryan was simply tremendous during his control segments & much like in their previous meeting in NOAH, he also sold tremendously for KENTA when it was time for that. Superb performance by the man. The meat of the match is amazing & it builds to an insane finishing stretch. The chemistry these two had was special. ****3/4
  7. This happened 10 years ago. It's pretty wild to think that KENTA is the only one who hasn't retired from in-ring competition out of the 4. This just had super fun, hot interactions between 4 of the best wrestlers in the world - Bryan & Nigel, Bryan & KENTA, Morishima & Nigel, Morishima & KENTA. Great atmosphere, great sequences, FIP segments, hot tags, an all-time great balls-to-the-walls finishing stretch - this truly had it all. Terrific match; one of the best tags ROH has ever put on & a helluva way for ROH to debut in the PPV biz. ****1/2
  8. I just CAN'T BELIEVE that there was a SUB-10 MINUTE NOAH MAIN EVENT in 2007. I mean that in the most positive way possible. We start things off with them going right to the business with a crazy intense strike exchange that ends up with KENTA getting the control w/ a nice lariat. KENTA does a great job working over the champ - Morishima gets a nice comeback with a big lariat, his comeback is quickly cut off in awesome fashion by KENTA who gives him a HUGE German. Badass. KENTA again controls for a while only for Morishima to get the control with a LARIAT. Clearly the story they told in this match is that key to success is a goddamn lariat. Always a lariat. The finishing stretch was tremendous with Morishima getting fired up during their strikefest - he pushes KENTA to the corner as he pummels him with those strikes of his. Just a really great, classic sprint. Is this really a NOAH main event match for the ROH World Championship or a G1 Climax tournament match? ****1/2
  9. Bryan/KENTA II was an outstanding match w/ an outstanding performance by Danielson. I really liked the early mat work which was stopped by a slap to Danielson from KENTA. Now that's a way to get out of the mat. Danielson's dominance over KENTA was such a blast to watch - his work on top was so compelling to watch. And to add to that, he sold really damn well for KENTA, too. This was just a total Bryan Danielson show & I loved it. ****1/2
  10. I have never liked this match, but since I am doing a little KENTA project, I decided that what the heck, let's give it a shot one more time. Marufuji's work on top during the beginning stakes of the match was spotty at best. Mostly it was very forgettable, but there were some great moments like him striking KENTA down by going after his neck. KENTA's selling of Marufuji's onslaught was really good. When it was time for KENTA to get his big comeback in, the match really got fantastic, I LOVED his comeback, he had such a badass one all the while selling the damage Marufuji had done. KENTA's control segment was really damn good, his work over Marufuji was vicious. Then comes the most memorable spot of the match - Marufuji hitting the guardrail with his THROAT is still one of the most brutal things I have ever seen in a wrestling ring. From then on the match pretty much becomes a full on spotfest with them hitting each other w/ their big moves - it's not bad though, as the excitement & urgency gradually built & built as they went into that section of the match. They did go a bit into the overkill zone by the end though. Overall on this watch I actually really, really, REALLY liked this match. Pretty surprised about that. ****1/4
  11. This match will always have a special place in my heart as it was the first Bryan Danielson match I ever saw & he ended up becoming my favorite wrestler of all-time. I think it's arguably the greatest match of all-time - top-3 at worst, #1 at best. Just pure magic from the entrances - when Danielson makes his way to the ring as Final Countdown blasts through the Manhattan Center, I already got goosebumps. His entrance here is one of my all-time favorite entrances; he just gives this vibe that he is the fucking king of the jungle, the man. Then the actual match; the whole thing was just the perfect storm - you got KENTA who has been booked as this unstoppable hard hitting juggernaut in ROH & then you got Danielson, who was fighting for the 1 year mark as the ROH World Champ while having an injured shoulder & all. Naturally KENTA kicked the shit out of that shoulder - you combine the brutality of those kicks KENTA dished out & the dramatic selling of Danielson = perfect. The moments like Danielson going for the Surfboard but not being able to which causes the crowd to chant "you fucked up" which Danielson quickly shuts down as he goes "I fucked up? I don't EVER fuck up!" while slamming KENTA's knees to the ground. The GTS nearfall which might just be the single greatest nearfall that I've seen in wrestling. Danielson ripping off the shoulder tape before going for the big backdrop superplex. It's just all pro wrestling perfection. *****
  12. The last time the Takeover lads tagged & much like their other 2 matches - this was a classic. Loved the beginning with Shibata & Taue starting things - Shibata invited Taue to mat wrestle with him & then Taue makes fun of Shibata's "martial arts" by doing the generic kungfu pose. Tremendous moment. The whole story of the match was KENTA & especially Shibata being complete dicks to Taue and it was just so FUN. They took cheap shots at him all the way through. Go was easily the most forgettable performer in the match, but even he did one helluva job in it - he rocked his FIP segment very well & the hot tag Taue gave to him was really good. So everybody was on point. And with that, the Takeover trilogy is complete - instantly when I finished this match my thought was "if KENTA & Shibata would've had a legit few year run as an active team, they would've gone down as one of the best teams ever". ****1/2
  13. This was a great match. KENTA & especially Morishima were absolutely OUTSTANDING - Rikio was really good too, but holy shit was Marufuji awful or what? He actually came off as a comedy wrestler because of how bad he was in this. LOOK AT THIS. I legit laughed out loud when I saw him do that. Best pure striker in NOAH history, baybeeh. But yeah, great match. Could've been even greater had Marufuji not been involved. ****
  14. Pro Wrestling fucking lives in North Carolina at the Mid-Atlantic Sportatorium! This match got unbelievable hype by those who attended the show & I was honestly afraid it wouldn't live up to my insanely high expectations, but who I am to doubt Chip Day & TREVOR F'N LEE? This lived up to all the hype. All of it. CWF Worldwide episodes drop at 9 PM, it's 4 AM my time & my plan was to watch this when I wake up - but I couldn't sleep & once I noticed that the episode had been uploaded, I just had to give it a watch right away. Was so hyped for this shit. Let's talk about how Trevor Lee is quite possibly the best wrestler in the world. He wrestles a pretty different style on the other promotions he wrestles for (TNA, PWG, AAW..) - and he is very entertaining in that style, but in CWF he is the best big match wrestler on the whole goddamn planet right now. These 2 had some really great interactions in Trevor's 6-Pack challenge for the title (****1/4) on the Worldwide episode from 03/22. They kicked the shit out of each other in that one, oh boy, that was just a little sample of what they were gonna do here. The match starts off with some neat feeling out between the 2 - really good work on the mat, just fun back & forth. They very quickly established that Chip Day's kicks are absolutely deadly as he went for a kick which Trevor ducked. Trevor was absolutely brilliant w/ his character work when it came to those kicks of Chip - every time he successfully dodged a kick, he had to collect himself because he knew if Chip would land that shotgun blast of his, the title could be gone from his waist. He tries to keep things "civil" as he doesn't want to start trading strikes with Chip - eventually they catch each other's legs & as they both put them down, Chip lands a goddamn STIFF kick to Trevor. From then on the match becomes pretty much a full on slugfest with them trading those strikes - Trevor's selling was unbelievably good during this, quite possibly the best selling performance of the year as far as I am concerned. The strikes in this were the best ones I've seen in the indies in a looooong time. And that includes guys like Hero, Low Ki, Callihan. Trevor & Chip just beat the shit out of each other in a level I haven't seen in indies in years. My favorite moments of the match however were Trevor's epic comebacks - after he gets a big nearfall on Chip, he starts pounding his chest & says "I need you" to the crowd while his eyes closed. Goosebumps, man, goosebumps. And then the goddamn finishing stretch with him getting his chest kicked in by Chip while he gets more & more fired up - then he gets up and delivers 3 badass PK's to Chip only for Chip to kick out at 1 - they go face-to-face & start slapping the shit out of each other - a battle that Trevor eventually wins & chokes Chip out with a guillotine & then kicks his head in with an epic buzzsaw kick. What a fucking finish to an all-time great match. Then the post-match stuff with Trevor showing respect to Chip & the crowd giving both guys a standing ovation. Not gonna lie, got a little emotional there. *****
  15. KENTA had a classic vs. Austin Aries' tag partner Roderick Strong the night before & here he went and delivered another classic. The strikes were great, the flow was great, this was just great. I loved how Aries in the beginning tried to keep things on mat so KENTA couldn't deliver those well established deadly strikes of his - and when KENTA eventually did blast Aries with those kicks, my goodness. This had it all - great transitions, great strikes, great sense of urgency, amazing crowd heat & no dull moments. ****1/2
  16. This was wonderful. Just two great hard hitting wrestlers putting on a great hard hitting match. They slugged it out & threw bombs at each other. One of the best moments of the match was Roddy blocking KENTA's attempt to go for the top rope Falcon Arrow w/ a forearm to the face. Lovely stuff. ****1/2
  17. Very hard hitting, intense three way dance. Starts off in super explosive fashion, it gets derailed & loses it's steam a bit after KENTA gets legitimately knocked out after receiving the mother of all slaps from Joe, but they get back into things quickly & the match remains awesome till the end. ****
  18. I didn't like this the first time I watched this, and now on my 2nd watch, I really WANTED to like it, but I sadly didn't. Just like on the first watch I just didn't get behind the match structure at any point - it just feels like the match never gets going. One thing that was good about this is the finishing run w/ the ankle lock drama, but other than that - completely soulless. *
  19. A world class tag team in KENTAFuji going against two of the best singles wrestlers in the world, a dream team of the aces of ROH in Bryan Danielson & Samoa Joe. No way this wasn't gonna be great. It started off with some nice work between Danielson & Marufuji - that transitioned into Marufuji being the FIP, which he was tremendous at I might add - that really was a pleasant surprise because in some of the KENTAFuji tags in the past he hasn't been the strongest FIP. Here he thankfully was tremendous. Joe & especially Danielson were fantastic with their work over him, working the heat on him in terrific fashion. Eventually Maru makes the hot tag to KENTA who is really fiery in that - he goes right after Joe & my goodness their interactions were HEATED. Such a shame we never got to see a singles match between them in 2006-2007. Danielson gets to be the FIP now, and he does absolutely amazing job in that - selling his ass off for KENTAFuji who did their awesome work over him. While Maru was really great in his FIP segment, Danielson really was on another level. Same could be said about the next hot tag - KENTA was great, but goddamn Joe came in like a KILLER when Dragon got to make the tag to him. The whole finishing stretch was really damn awesome too, with everybody getting to shine. Truly one of the best tag matches in ROH history. ****3/4
  20. What a goddamn big boy sprint! It starts off with an INTENSE lock up & I so loved that. Doering screams "COME ON SHOW ME POWER!" which meant it was time for TEST OF STRENGTH~! - when that was done, it becomes a total bombfest & it's just lovely. 7 minutes of badass heavyweight action. ****1/4
  21. Well this sure was fantastic. I am not very familiar with Jake Lee, but if he hasn't had that breakthrough performance/match/moment yet, this sure had to be that breakthrough performance/match. They did a fantastic job in teasing that he might pull off the upset against the ace - Kento sold his ass off for him & sold that "oh shit, this kid is the real deal" feeling with his great facial expressions. This was so good. ****
  22. I do think that these have been the best shows of the year so far. In particular 83 is definitely my #1 right now.
  23. This tells a great story of KENTA being much more vicious, much more focused & much more complete than he was in their previous match in 2004. Here he borderline DOMINATES Kobashi at points, doing awesome work over him - Kobashi's comebacks were tremendous & the ending with him busting out the goddamn BURNING HAMMER was the perfect ending to the story this match told. I didn't like this as much as their 04 match, but it was still great. ****
  24. One of the best debut matches for any wrestler in any company ever. KENTA was welcomed to ROH with a bang - Low Ki was without a doubt the perfect opponent for his first match there, as their styles are quite similar. They beat the shit out of each other with their stiff strikes & quick combinations. Wild stuff. Terrific match. ****1/2
  25. The TAKEOVER duo has an awesome entrance together. As Misawa makes his entrance, Shibata just stares him down & I am already loving this. Then the actual match starts with Shibata completely owning Go. He doesn't want to fight Go, he wants Misawa! So Misawa tags in, and we get some great stiff back & forth between him & Shibata. Eventually Shibata comes out on top, so Misawa works as the FIP for a bit - KENTA & Shibata were awesome working over him in complete dickish, no respect fashion. They weren't out there to shake hands with the legend or anything, they were out there to make a hard hitting, badass statement. Misawa comes back to things & KENTA works as the FIP for a brief amount of time - eventually the Takeover fellas gain the advantage again & they just kick the shit out of poor Go. Shibata & KENTA truly were amazing together in this one. Then the finishing run, my goodness. That was really hot & had a real sense of urgency to it - great way to cap off this classic tag match. Takeover rules. ****1/2
