Jay Briscoe passes away in car accident. Age 38
Shrike02 replied to KawadaSmile's topic in Pro Wrestling
Many years ago my uncle died in similar circumstances: a fatal car crash caused by another driver, he was not wearing a seatbelt. Cars are dangerous machines. Human error occurs. Wear your seatbelt. It can save your life. There is no good reason not to wear it. -
Rucka's Queen and Country deservedly won Eisner awards in 2002 and 2003. Rucka was really firing on all cylinders around this time. Maybe I should go back and re-read Gotham Central.

A current series I quite like so far is Strange - Clea as Sorcerer Supreme! - and the Cantwell Namor book promises to be lots of fun.

Interesting. I'm not sure I ever read X-Statix. Probably never made it to my pull list because I've really never been a fan of Giffen's work.
-
Lone Wolf and Cub has in my opinion a nearly perfect ending so it's well worth it to read the series to its end.

Haven't thought of Xenozoic for a long time but it was a must-buy for me back in the day. I was irked it never got a proper ending.

I find the idea that Jumbo was merely competent rather unsupported by the footage. But please, make that argument.

Found myself speeding through the 2004-2009 era She-Hulk title which ran 38 issues. I found the first 24 issues or so quite fun, fast reading but when Slott leaves the magic fades quite noticeably. Peter David does manage to tell a fairly okay finale with the last two issues ... until the very last panel, where he tells an awful joke by any standard. The art is pretty decent throughout although the colouring ranges wildly in quality and the cover illustration style of that era leaves me cold after a while. Thumbs marginally up, especially for the first half of the run.

Sad but not unexpected news about Perez. I absolutely adored his long run as writer/artist on Wonder Woman. I re-read my collection recently. Despite proper care the pages are yellowed; this detracted from Perez's outstanding art. I will have to pick up some reprints to reprise my original awe at his artistic achievements, which, combined with a very good use of Greek mythology, made it such a great comic for so long.

Highly recommend the Cartoonist Kayfabe episode where Rob Liefeld guests and does a Neal Adams tribute. He also did a podcast tribute which I'm going to track down.

I'm a big fan of Hellboy and have read and collected almost all of it in dead tree editions, either original issues or trades. It is a lot of fun if you have patience with it to grow into its own.

Pretty much anything Hickman has done for Marvel is worth checking out.
-
The Cartoonist Kayfabe material is vast. Have really enjoyed the commentaries about Akira and its predecessors; Dumo and Fireball I clearly need to track down. The Lone Wolf and Cub artist edition is amazing. Jim and Ed go to bat for the artwork and get into some great analysis of manga production.
-
That Cartoonist Kayfabe recommendation was gold. Thanks. I'm just a bit sad there's not a lot of Steve Ditko or Kurt Busiek content that I've seen so far.

If we're discussing 80s WWF it's impossible to ignore Patterson vs. Slaughter. The Alley fight and the whole feud leading up to it - the Cobra Clutch challenge - is really great.

Yes, I'd say Marvels was clearly the top comic published by the company for the decade, and no, the premise of the story it told did not bother me in the slightest.

Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 4
Shrike02 replied to TravJ1979's topic in Pro Wrestling
I had nearly as much fun watching Kal in front of the camera as he seemed to be having doing the shows. He certainly seems to have led a remarkable life well lived. -
I checked out a couple of reviews, and yes, I will likely pick it up too.

In that recent batch of MLG footage that surfaced, you see a young Bruno manage a perfectly competent dropkick ... I think it's highly unfair to characterize Bruno as some kind of lumbering strongman. By modern standards did he have a large variety of moves? No, of course not. But those he did do are deceptively smooth. He moved surprisingly well in the ring and was great at fundamentals like an armdrag, for example, in the great feud vs. Larry.

Yes, you've hit the nail on the head. My last word on this topic.

I'm glad you admit to making a joke but speaking as someone who has practiced criminal law on the defense side, I hate seeing this sort of rationale even as a joke. The justice system, and any other institution, only functions if ethical people do the right thing. Take the burgeoning scandal that's enveloped the Chicago Blackhawks and the NHL, for example. At one point there were 7-8 hockey executives and a head coach in a room who had been informed that one of their players had reported a sexual assault by the video coach. Ultimately no-one had the courage to do the right thing and suspend the coach and report the allegations to the police; they only referred the matter to their HR department three weeks later and the organization gave him the option to resign or be the subject of an internal investigation. Guess what happened? He resigned and was convicted some years later of criminal charges of assaulting a minor. The twisted logic that carried the day was their organization was close to reaching a Stanley Cup final and the team needed no distractions in pursuit of a championship. They put that objective over the safety of a player. And that's why eleven years later everyone in that room (except for one) has had to resign and been effectively expelled from the league. But I suppose your joke comes from the premise is "I'm a selfish criminal who doesn't want to go to jail so I'll hope an unethical lawyer gives me a better chance to escape jail time". But I assure you, that's equally wrong. In my experience the most skilled lawyers are those with the most integrity. Rant over. I guess I should watch this episode.
-
Speaking as a lawyer, this is literally the worst and most wrong-headed conclusion you could draw from your assessment of McDevitt. Or maybe you're just making a joke, I can't quite tell.

I do mean to read Berserk but have been a bit hesitant because it's going to take effort to acquire the whole run. I think Lone Wolf and Cub has a fine art style which suits its story, which I adore.
-
I should add, it's been years since I've read it but I have yet to read a manga to match Lone Wolf and Cub. Am curious if others here disagree.

I have read all of the published Conan material by Howard and his literary successors; I plan to read the comic adaptations more thoroughly as I've only dabbled with them over the years. Am interested to see if I have a positive view of the initial run of Marvel by Thomas et al. which I have never read in full.
