It's also fair to say the found footage for Piper in the last ten years has made those of us who grew up watching him rate his body of work more highly than before in many cases. If only this grace had been granted to a couple of Piper's best opponents ... I'm thinking of you, Greg Valentine ...
-
Fujiwara didn't finish higher because he only garnered votes from 42% of the voting pool. Those who voted for him, including me, rated him very highly.
-
I wouldn't laugh his argument out of court ... I hadn't really considered Tully a #1 candidate although I ranked him pretty high. He absolutely was a phenomenal heel.
-
Tough to see Buddy Rose fall. Phenomenal wrestler at his peak.
-
I adore the Destroyer. Had him ranked super high. Glad someone ranked him #1. Him falling out of the top 100 is quite aggravating.

I was one spot away from being the high voter on Martel, I believe. So yeah, this.
-
So many guys off my list now. Perhaps I'm most surprised by the latest casualty, Sgt. Slaughter, falling off now. He's just in so much great stuff.
-
My list was pretty idiosyncratic but I was pretty surprised to see one of my picks fall this early in Terry Rudge.

You already have but I'll remind you in the coming days.

I watched this past episode and greatly enjoyed it. I have an idea for an episode.

I meant to vote for Cesca and forgot. Pretty sure I voted for Catanzaro; forgot to check whether he'd been nominated. Their match really was a harbinger of quality for the French catch archive.

I voted this time around and although I don't think my ballot accomplishes the stated objectives, it is a snapshot of 100 people whose work I thoroughly enjoy. I joined the board just before the 2016 voting was wrapping up. I consumed the heck out of all those GWE podcasts and as a re-entry and evolution of my fandom, they were great.

It's hard to overstate Yvon Robert's status in the province, he was a huge territorial star who even out-earned Maurice Richard at his peak for goodness' sake, and the latter would make wrestling appearances as a guest referee. Which says more about how hockey players were exploited by club owners than anything else. For those who might not know much about hockey, Maurice "Rocket" Richard is the most beloved Montreal Canadien of all-time (apologies to Jean Beliveau), which makes him something like the Babe Ruth of hockey. This famous short story by Rock Carrier sums it up, and it was made into a fantastic animated short by the NFB. -
I'll predict Roddy Piper will rank higher than last time if enough voters examine his new footage.

When I dove into this period with your encouragement I was just amazed by this match, as I had never seen Strongbow do anything laudable in the ring. Valentine performed miracles here.

I will fully read all the publicly available documents but I"ll just say there's some confusion in this thread about who is morally or legally culpable of XYZ, above and beyond whether criminal charges are filed. There are many many unknown facts and a criminal prosecution has a much higher burden of proof than a civil suit. One thing is assuredly clear to me, however. It's that many more victims may well come forward.
-
Putting my lawyer hat on for a moment: this is a civil lawsuit. There is no criminal indictment. This may happen in the future, but for now he's not facing jail time, he's in jeopardy of being on the hook for damages in a civil lawsuit in the tens of millions of dollars.

Shrike02 replied to Ricky Jackson's topic in WWE
A tangential point - I too stopped watching current WWE back in 2019 - but this is a good business deal for Netflix and for WWE. Someone whose opinion I valued opined and I'm paraphrasing here: This is a smart deal and super cheap. 520 episodes for $5b is $9m per episode, or 1/16th of what it cost Netflix to make Rebel Moon, which fell out of the top 5 in its third week on the platform. Also great for WWE, which was bought for $21b and just repaid back 25% of that. I find at first blush that this is an accurate evaluation. WWE still has plenty of inventory to flog and Netflix may well expand its sports programming if this deal works for them. -
I'd suggest your proposition needs some evidence adduced in order for anyone to judge the merit of these two claims. Especially as you have to establish some sort of nexus of causation for NWE wrestling of 60-70s-> NA wrestling popularity of 80s onward. Received wisdom is the death of the territories paved the way for WWE's explosive growth in the mid 80s.

I've been collecting and reading the Fantagraphics deluxe reprints of Prince Valiant (the first seven volumes so far) and Hal Foster continues to impress. His influence on American comics cannot be overstated. His artwork is really really good and his writing isn't that far behind. Well worth seeking out.

On a couple of occasions that I recall Backlund delivers an atomic drop so impressive it could be a finisher and the crowd pops for it. Backlund was ridiculously strong. I'd tend to agree Backlund tends to wrestle to the level of his opponent. Fortunately as champion he had a lot of talented workers to match up with and thus his extensive list of very good to great matches in this period. Good thread.

The format enhances the story's impact. Excellent work with just a few lulls of pace. I really liked it.

Very justifiable hype, I'd say.
