Personally my feeling is that MLW should fully commit to the "real sports league" angle they already somewhat use. Vague references to "league officials" are fine and weight classes are a solid touch they could go even harder with a ranking system (occasionally mentioning PWI's is nice but I mean create their own) time limits displayed on a Fox Box and intruding a round robin tournament like all the major sports leagues do. Maybe call it the "MLW Grand Prix".

I can read the match descriptions! Nice and detailed. Simmes gets the first win in the Maple Leaf women's division. PCO and Neidhart both look strong and could be major players going forward.
-
Gilbert and Missy mouth off to the boss and quickly realize why that may not be the best career move. The search for the 4th Horseman begins... again. Muraco is after a rematch. Humperdinck promises to show what his monster can really do at Mayham. Double J, Rogers and Terri all introduce themselves to the new audience. Debeers is his usual charming self I see. Reed certainly seems to think so. The tag division is heating up but Williams may be breaking down. Douglas and Powers seem to be settling in. Nice to see Mr Wrestling 2 find a way to contribute to the next generation.

Oakland. Eventful night for the Wild Things. Jackal and the Juice Crew look strong while leader Jack goes down in defeat. Soultaker has a big match but gets interrupted. Another tough lost for Austin. Young gets caught in the path of the Bulldozer. San Francisco. Scotty just can't keep his eyes of Trisa. A tough win for the Animal. Young is gaining respect in defeat. Rose shows Gunn he isn't ready to ride off into the sunset. Severn and Payne get a bit of payback on the Syndicate. The Southern Boys continue to struggle. Taker and his cousin get into a real family feud. Fresno. He'd kill me for saying this but it's actually pretty sweet seeing Finlay get so proud of O'Grady. Adams outkicks Blackman. Kawada and Sasaki are putting it together. Bigelow looks like the Beast he's meant to be. Eddie seems comfortable with the Rainbow Warriors. Pillman and Malenko take each other to the limit.

Larry was trying to muddy up Jumbo's moment but Oliver wasn't having it. Orndorff asserts himself as Mid America champion. Solid return for the Foreman. The Bullet's feel good return is ruined by a also returning Idol. The AWA just got a burst of Vinergy...good grief. As an aside, DAMN Dukes was jacked. Dream Machine & Oliver both leave in a hurry and Chicky Starr has to return to have the Mean Machine's backs. What's DM up to? Akbar and Cameron, together again. Los Guerreros have truly embraced the family motto. Sarge already has another target. The Superstar is back! I for one totally bought Adias and Welch's comedy act. Randy wins the clash of cousins to win a TV title shot.

You can find them on the NJPW subreddit. You might be surprised at how many people find their schtick entertaining.

Personally I like when heels do these kind of petty, dick moves. If nothing else it's a creative angle.

Bert addresses the situation in Memphis to start the show. Hickerson doesn't strike me as the management type but in a territory like MCW i think he could pull it off. Loved Dundee's opponent doing a Flair impersonation. Davis is just being shameless at this point. Riggins may have just become MCW's biggest heel after costing the Wildside the tag titles and joining up with Debb...i mean Princess Dee. Southern tries to make the traitor pay but he slips through his fingers.

I like how you give us a look into the entire Japanese wrestling scene instead of just focusing on yourself. Japan's been ignored in the game and this kind of thing adds serious depth.

The hype for the Royal Rumble continues to build as the titular match is really filling up.
-
Um, there are some pretty big gaps where I'm guessing match descriptions are supposed to go but most of them didn't load I guess. Still what there is looks solid.
-
Okay so I managed to forget to put a whole ass match in Day One. I have rectified this so feel free to give it a second look.

Taped before Main Event at the Municipal Auditorium. Originally airing on 1/7/89 on the USA Network. On Commentary: Bob Caudle David Crockett The debuting Master Blasters (Blade & Iron) defeat Mike McGill & Rick Schultz when Iron(Kurrgan) held McGill in a Canadian backbreaker and Blade (Greene) came off the top with a elbow. "The Latin Heartthrob" Al Perez defeats Max Von Kaiser with a bridging German suplex. Brad Anderson w/Ole Anderson defeats Lewis Masterson with a Fujiwara armbar. Main event. Super Strong Machine defeats "The California Stud" Rod Price w/"The Mastermind" Ron Fuller with the "Machine" Lariat. After the bell, a victorious SSM stared at the retreating Stud Stable and gave the "belt around waist" gesture. In other news... It's announced that due to the success of last year's event, SuperBrawl 2 will be promoted to a Pay Per View and will air live on February 17 from the Charlotte Coliseum in Charlotte NC.

From the Municipal Auditorium in Columbus GA. Previously recorded airing on 1/6/89 on the USA Network. On Commentary: Gordon Solie Ring announcer)Interviews: Sean Moony Match #1 "The Boogie Woogie Man" Jimmy Valiant vs "The Russian Bear" Ivan Koloff In a somewhat ironic move, the first episode of the new year features two long time fixtures of the NWA making their respective returns. Ivan gets tremendous heat waving the Soviet flag while Solie explains that the Soviet government has FINALLY paid his 50,000 dollar fine. Then Valiant's music hits and suddenly it's party time in Columbus. Valiant dances his way to the ring grooving with anyone and everyone who's down for it. Man or woman, old or young, black or white it don't matter to "Handsome" Jimmy. Ivan is on him as soon as the bell rings but even a pounding from the infamous Russian can't throw off Jimmy's rythm. Ivan throws him into the ropes but Valiant reverses and nails a big backbody drop before coming off the ropes with his "groovin" elbow drop for the win. Jimmy is hyped up as he heads to the back, dancing the whole way. Match #2 The Eliminators (John Kronus & Perry Saturn) defeat Rob Livingston & Dan Cosby with a spinning leg sweep/spinning heel kick combo on Cosby. We see a recap of Dick Slater being eliminated from the Gold Rush battle royal by Manny Fernandez then costing Fernandez against Bob Orton. We cut to a pre-tape from Slater saying what goes around comes around. Fernandez "screwed" him out of a World Title shot and he returned the favor. Says the NWA has suspended him for the week but he'll be there next week and if Fernandez is feeling froggy he just needs to jump. Match #3 Too Cold Scorpio defeats Matt "The Mauler" Bronstein with his jaw dropping 450 splash. Match #4 "British Magician" Steve Wright vs "Exotic Adrian Street w/Ms Linda These two give a demonstration of classic British catch wrestling which Street ultimately cinches with a crossface chicken wing. To the surprise of the fans, Street not only helps Wright up but offers a handshake which is cautiously excepted. Match #5 Badd Company (Paul Diamond & Pat Tanaka) w/Baby Doll defeat The Georgia Bulldogs with a Superkick/German suplex combo. Baby Doll is ranting to Sean Moony about how she's had to brush her teeth 5 times a day to get the taste of "Fireboy Chump or whatever his name is" out of her mouth. As she's raging, Ron Fuller walks down. He apologizes for interrupting but as a Southern Gentleman it offends him to see "a fine, upstanding lady" like Baby Doll be assaulted by a hooligan pretending he's a fireman. So he's taken the liberty of finding to look after her, straight from the Stud Stable ranch he introduces....Big John Studd! Baby Doll has looked sceptical so far but when she sees the 6'10 monster her eyes light up and she gets a wicked grin. Match #6 The Renegade Warriors (Mark & Chris Youngblood) defeat Sal Massaro & Vinny Ranauro with a double chop to Massaro. Main Event. "Chief Wahoo McDaniel, ?&? vs The Paul Jones Army (Super Destroyer, Kamala & Shaska Whatley) w/"Number One" Paul Jones & Friday McDaniel was angered by the outcome of his match at Day One and wanted another match, Jones said if Wahoo could find a couple of partners he'd agree to a six man tag. Wahoo certainly found two qualified partners in the form of Jimmy Snuka and Tom Prichard. The following match was action packed with everyone getting some shine. Kamala stood out as the fixer of his side as whenever Whatley or SD are in trouble they tag him in to turn the tide. The finish came during a pier-six brawl with Snuka turning a lariat attempt from Super D into an inside cradle for the three. The show ends with Solie hyping the fact that the Heritage Champion has just been pinned.

Portland. Austin hits his first snag against Chono. The Jackal gets voted in but Cactus has an eye on him. Haynes and the OWC are calling out every body. Ace gets an invite to the Club. The Rainbow Warriors are on a roll. Gunn shows his stuff against Adams but DDP proves the difference maker. Portland night 2. The OWC get their first win as a trio. Hart gets past a newly intense Scotty. Austin isn't as successful against Rose. The Force with a big win over the dominant Syndicate. Dustin and Windham close the show by holding onto their gold. Eugene. Mike with another Awesome win. Blackman Wrecks Bloom. The New Gen show why they are the future. The Dragon with a Perfect counter to the Ax Lariat. Another pair of successful defenses this time by the Midnights and Pillman.

NWA Update no 1. Since our last report regarding the National Wrestling Alliance, monumental developments have taken place. Jim Crockett Jr has been reported meeting with both Jerry Jarrett as well as Bert Prentice regarding Mr Crockett's plans to run shows in Tennessee. Mr Prentice was the first to leave witnesses say, having secured guarantees from both Jarrett and Crockett that neither WCW nor the NWA would intrude into the territory of Music City Wrestling. The conversation would continue between the remaining promoters and the results are being called a "division of the South" by sources within both companies. In addition to the promise to avoid the Nashville area, Mr Crockett swore to respect Mr Jarrett's traditional monopoly on the Memphis area in exchange for WCW staying out of Virginia and the Carolinas. Aside from these restrictions, the two are free to operate throughout the entire Southern United States as evidenced by Jarrett announcing that WCW's upcoming "Mayham" event would take place in Miami Florida. In other news from the NWA, it was reported at the "Day One" event that the NWA would be bringing back the "SuperBrawl" event introduced last year. Sources say that it's expected in the coming weeks of NWA television that the event will be announced as being promoted to a Pay Per View. This is said to be a "done deal" with plans for every title being defended to solidify the upgrade. Mr Crockett sees the move as a way to bridge the gap between Starrcade in November and the Crockett Cup in April as well as liking the idea of having a Pay Per View in every financial quarter. It seems the previously reported plans of Mr Crockett are beginning to come together. Whether or not they prove successful remains to be scene.

The UWF looks to rocket to the top of the Japanese wrestling scene in the new year.

The post Hogan era is off to a solid start as the WWF heads towards the first ever Royal Rumble.

Edmonton. All the new faces get a chance to shine. Haynes stuns everyone by aligning with the OWC. Blackman returns save Payne from the Syndicate. Stormfront take the champs to the limit. Hart gets a hotheaded new student and the Diamond Exchange immediately start messing with him. New year, Same Pacific Heavyweight Champion. Victoria. Stunning Steve shows what he can do. Blackman shows he's as lethal as ever. Scotty was too busy making eyes on Trisa to keep his eye on the prize. O'Grady has wormed his way into Finlay's heart and looks ready to climb the ranks. Jerry Lynn vows 89 will be the year of the New Generation. Haynes' new mean streak is paying off. Hart v Malenko is a technical wrestling fans dream. Vancouver. The Jackal seems to be unintentionally(?) driving a wedge in the Wild Things. Regal could be a wildcard now that he's on his own. A second successful defense for the Widowmaker. Kelowna. It's official. The Jackal is definitely on Cactus shit list. A pair of title defenses puts a pin on PCW's first loop of 89.

Great job setting the stage for the year to come. The year just started but WCW is poised to rock St Valentine's day and bring Mayham to Miami.

The National Wrestling Alliance Presents: Day One. Airing live on the USA Network on January 1 1989 from the Robarts Arena in Sarasota Florida. The camera pans the sold out arena as well as the ring setup. The letters "NWA" are laid out in gold across a blue canvas and the ring and entrance are connected via walkway. We then cut to Gordon Solie at the commentary table. GS: Thank you, thank you ladies and gentlemen. It's always a treat to be back in the Sunshine state. I am your host Gordon Solie and and I know I speak for NWA leadership when I say that we're delighted to be back on your television screen and excited to bring you another year of only the finest professional wrestling action. We have six huge matches including Wahoo McDaniel challenging for the NWA Heritage Title. James J Dillon has also promised that the Nature Boy has returned to the Four Horsemen. While I'm personally sceptical I can admit Mr Dillon has surprised me in the past. We will also see a number of video packages highlighting some of the talent that the NWA will be bringing you in the new year. Without any further ado fans, it's time for the Gold Rush battle royal. This bout will continue until two men are remaining with the two finalists facing each other in the main event to determine the number one contender to the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. Let's send it to the ring. Manny Fernandez and Bob Orton are the final two standing in the Gold Rush battle royal. The returning Dick Slater looked like he may have been on the verge of eliminating Orton but as he came off the ropes to charge the Ace, Fernandez intercepted him with a clothesline that sent Slater to the floor. *As the Patriots are awaiting to see who has accepted their challenge a commotion breaks out among the crowd. The camera cuts to the entrance where we see that Baby Doll has made her return to the NWA. Taking the mic she says not only is the "Perfect 10" back but in her travels she's found the perfect tag team for her to take to the top of the NWA tag scene. With that Bad Company's self titled song comes over the pa and the duo of Pat Tanaka and Paul Diamond join Baby Doll and the trio walk to the ring together.* Badd Company (Paul Diamond & Pat Tanaka) w/"The Perfect 10" Baby Doll defeat The Patriots (Firebreaker Chip & Todd Champion). Baby Doll got on the apron to distract Chip who took the opportunity to plant one on the Perfect 10. As he was being chewed out by an irate Baby Doll, Chip was rolled up by Diamond with both hands full of trunks. *We see cutting shots of a desolate area. Dead trees, dried out grass and animal bones are scattered throughout this wasteland. Two men come into scene. One is a muscular man with a short blonde mohawk while the other is a 7 foot monster with a military cut. The two stare menacingly into the camera as a voiceover says "In 1989, the Master Blasters will run the NWA!" *Doug Gilbert is warming up in the ring while JJ Dillon takes the mic and says he is the manager who moves mountains and when he makes a promise these sun baked simpletons can take it to the bank. With that he orders to stand up and give a proper welcome back to the Nature Boy... Buddy Landel!* "Nature Boy" Buddy Landel w/JJ Dillon defeats Doug Gilbert with a Figure Four leglock. The Killer Bees (B. Brian Blair & Jim Brunzell) defeat The Eliminators (Perry Saturn & John Kronus) with the "Stinger" double dropkick. The Eliminators may have lost but they impressed both the fans and Solie with their impressive tag team fundamentals. Hair vs Hair match. "The Latin Heartthrob" Al Perez defeats Brett "Hack" Sawyer with a O'Connor roll turned into a bridging German suplex. Sawyer pitches a massive fit and security has to hold him down in the chair as Perez shaves him to the delight of the crowd. Brett was distraught afterwards only snapping out of it when Bart Sawyer returns to wrap a towel around his head and they rushed to the back. NWA Heritage Title. The Super Destroyer(c) w/"Number One Paul Jones defeats "Chief" Wahoo McDaniel after a loaded headbutt from the champ. https://youtu.be/PiYZnAcqsYc?si=E-BBQcAfy96JtyOV Before the main event begins we see a graphic for SuperBrawl 2! NWA World Heavyweight Title Number One contender match. "The Ace" Bob Orton w/JJ Dillon defeats "Raging Bull" Manny Fernandez when a ref bump allowed Dick Slater to run in and whack Fernandez with a chair leaving him easy pickings for the Horseman.

Your winner of the inaugural Continental Classic and your first American Triple Crown Champion is.....EDDIE KINGSTON!
-
Finally part 2! Burke may not have been advertised but he makes a great first impression. Dream Machine gets to heated at Lyle to focus on his actual opponents. The Vin Man is back....Yeah! Kokina proves himself the top monster of the AWA. I think Buzz may have actually just committed murder on a pay per view. The one dollar bounty cracked me up as Canek cracked spine. After a long time in Larry Land, the AWA has a Wonderful new Mid America champion. Hector & Chavo show they know how to Lie, Cheat and Steal. Cameron may not have gotten a match but he still cuts a strong promo. Thanks to Sarge and a freaking stun gun, Jumbo Tsuruta is the new AWA World Heavyweight Champion!

A fun matinee sets the stage for the big show. I wonder how much Slick charged Heenan for that assist? One can only imagine the opening match pop The Hulkster got. Savage holds onto the gold but doesn't quite slay the giant. Rude takes advantage of a distracted Roberts to get a major win. Bad News gets nasty but the Warrior refuses to stay down. Wow.... the WWF really must not have had much time for that edit job. The Rockers close the show with a clean sweep.
