I'm currently doing a book club deal rewatching and rating segments on early Nitro and PPVs (personally I'll probably stop at the end of 1997 but maybe push through 1998 if Thunders are up by the time we get to it) and I'd say his ring work was actually very good during the time as well. His body looks like absolutely dog shit, though. I didn't remember him looking that bad physically until 1997 after the shoulder surgery. However he's going 100%, maybe 110% every time he's on screen no matter the person on the other side of the ring, or what or who the promo is about. He's pulling out every trick he has every time he's on screen and is wildly entertaining.

I feel like NJ having 1-2 match cards and the rest being filler holding pattern bullshit + Bullet Club nonsense going on years and years past expiration point have been the main knocks on NJ for like....idk 5-6 years. Also the let someone cook, get them as hot as possible, then cool them off for a year and put the belt on them a year after people stopped caring.

I think his promos suck in the sense that 9 times out of 10 he comes off as much bigger asshole than the heel the promo is about and his go to is to shit on them in ways that just make them look second rate and there's nothing they can do to overcome the guy everyone knows is the boss saying guys are shitty mid carders no one likes. He also goes very heavy on self indulgent nonsense which makes him seem like an egomaniac if he's a face.

It's actually exactly the kind of tone deafness I'd expect from a guy who started AEW by breaking HHH's throne with a sledgehammer and then getting an American flag version of his logo as a neck tattoo.

That's not been his gimmick in AEW at all. It kind of sort of was up to the point AEW started, but he's very much been corporate suit guy on screen in AEW imo.

I can't imagine anyone in any demo really wanting to also have to hear about political divide, broken system, racism, xenophobia stuff on a wrestling show in 2021. Not that wrestling has ever really avoided such things that were big in the culture discussion at any given time, but all those discussions usually weren't also in every other aspect of culture and entertainment as well. If you're a person who thinks "wokeism" is ruining America, do you really want to hear that promo on your wrestling show? If you're a politically active person who is involved in those discussions in all your other aspects of life, do you really want to hear that promo on your wrestling show? If you're a person who tries to avoid the discussion from either direction all together, do you really want to hear that promo on your wrestling show? There's zero way to have that promo on your show in 2021 and not make people mad or tune out regardless of what angle they view life from. It was just dumb from the start. Entirely tone deaf and not thought out from the jump. And all a just a hack way to have Cody have a reason to use the American Dream moniker...something I'm pretty sure he said he'd never do, but he's also doing it in a way that's 100% going to end up with the crowd chanting USA USA USA at the bad brown foreigner.
