  1. Good match and a good stip. Austin has already improved quite a bit since his first appearance on the yearbook. Worth mentioning, this feud at least initially appears to have been designed to put over the USWA Wrestling School, as they always mention that Austin was a trainee there and caught the eye of Adams, who was nice enough to give him a break before he was even ready, etc. Did anybody else come out of that school of note, or was Austin the only one?
  2. Fun TV match from these two that is different from a lot of the good Cactus Jack matches we will see later in the decade, but nonetheless a pretty fun one. Probably does not speak well for Gilbert's role in the company at this point when he's going to a 15 minute draw with Cactus at this point. I kinda wish the Yearbook had the segment later in the program with Norman, Captain Mike, and the black box (who I assume was Abby) but when the Yearbook granted me Atlas vs Onita last night, that probably spoiled me a bit.
  3. Based on its reputation of being a poor paying city in the Memphis loop, I have no doubt that Robert Fuller meant every word when he said he hated everything about Evansville. Good promo.
  4. I liked Perfect's cartwheel bump to the floor that opened the match. That one got me to rewind and watch it again. The rest of it...well, it was an Ultimate Warrior match, with Perfect doing what he can to make it not suck. I'm not entirely sure he succeeded but damned if he didn't try. I do like the announcers on commentary putting over the win for Warrior as a stepping stone towards getting ready for Wrestlemania, in what may be one of the few times I praise a commentary trio that includes Gorilla Monsoon, Lord Alfred Hayes, and Hillbilly Jim.
  5. That might just be his mindset, though. He's wrestling fourth from the top, and judging by the lineup for this show, this match probably happened right after intermission (I assume they sent the fans into intermission with Earthquake/Duggan). For a lot of wrestlers, they would not be looking to steal the show in that slot; they just want to have a good match while the fans get back in their seats from getting hot dogs or whatever. I'm not totally defending Bret, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if the WWF mindset in 1990 is that you don't try to steal the show in a midcard post-intermission match with two guys who aren't being programmed together, and if that's the case, I'm not going to fault Bret for that. Anyway, I'm talking like the match sucked, which it did not, but I also get the feeling these two could have had a better match together. Martel doesn't do a lot of interesting stuff, which I blame on being a heel in 1990 WWF, and he's in control most of the way. It's good, but in another time or another era, or even another position on the card, I feel like these two would have had a better match.
  6. How did Tully Blanchard's career peter out the way it did after he didn't go back to WCW in '89? It feels baffling to me that Tully didn't eventually wind up back in WCW after sitting out a year or so. For that matter, how did Tully not wind up in Smoky Mountain in '92? How did he not have a Global run when they were throwing around money in '91? Even a short Memphis run would have been interesting, as I don't think he would have necessarily fit in well there, but he probably could have had a Unified title run and a few good matches with Lawler. Anyway, the match was good. Enos and Tully in their brief moments together worked better as a team than Enos and Bloom did for much of their existence, but that might not be fair to Bloom since Tully Blanchard is one of the best tag workers who ever lived. In a 1990 hair update, I think The Trooper has a jheri curl. Glad to see some AWA represented here.
  7. Savage promos are always welcome. Nothing special, but Savage always puts a smile on my face.
  8. This was as simultaneously awful and awesome as I was hoping it would be. This is indy pro wrestling and everything I love about it.
  9. Another solid Tony Atlas promo that makes me geeked up to watch Atlas vs Onita. To find out that the match not only made tape, but is the next match on the Yearbook made my night.
  10. I love heel Andre promos for some reason, even if I can barely understand him. No comedy out of Heenan, which is nice, and they do a solid job hyping the tag title match at Wrestlemania. I remember as a kid looking forward to that match more than anything else on the show save Hogan/Warrior (and watching those promos, I can't figure out why I was looking forward to that match so much).
  11. What the fuck is wrong with these people?
  12. Wonder if people in the WWF forgot this existed? You'd have figured they would have found a way to use this at some point to make fun of Ventura.
  13. Either this is the same match, or Austin was so green at this point, that Adams had to call the same match spot for spot, including finish, two weeks in a row. I'm not ruling that out, either.
  14. I'm not going to criticize Ole's promo, because I think it was good. But the problem is, it feels dated for this time period. It might have been more effective in the 70's or early 80's, but at this point, Ole Anderson, dressed in a polo shirt and slacks looking like your next door neighbor, calmly explaining that he's going to destroy the Steiners arm...I don't know, the presentation felt lacking to me. I could see where fans of this time period who didn't grow up watching Ole might not take him seriously.
  15. I felt like this cut off right as the third fall was starting to get really good. Feels like a match that could have used another 2-3 minutes, but was still a fun trios match.
  16. I have a friend who we call Chrispy, and every car he's owned for the past 15+ years has been called the Chrispy Cruiser. I had a friend over not too long ago and we were watching some '90 Yearbook stuff, and when Funk dropped the "Chrispy Cruiser" line on Cruise, he couldn't stop laughing - he had no idea that's where I had stolen that from.
  17. Not only that, but Sapphire is Piper's go to person for all things related to the black community, apparently. Seriously, I have to ask...had everybody in the WWF lost their goddamned around this time? You have Hogan and Warrior babbling on about God knows what, you have Piper coming out dressed in half blackface, Dusty Rhodes is wearing polka dots, you have a white man pretending to be from deepest darkest Africa...seriously, what the fuck is going on?
  18. Tony Atlas has been a revelation on this set so far. I honestly had no idea he was a good talker.
  19. Man, Kerry Von Erich is just uncomfortable to watch on promos. I'm not sure if it's because he's drugged out of his mind, or if he's just naturally dumb, or both, but this promo was brutal to watch. Also, Terrence Garvin has emo hair.
  20. Good promo by Lawler running down Jeff Jarrett in advance of an upcoming USWA Unified World Title match. I like these heel Lawler promos, as I feel like it's a window to what we would have gotten had Lawler ever won the NWA World Title in the 80's.
  21. Way to have an original slogan, Raul's Mexican Food. How many hours did it take to come up with "You've tried the rest, now try the best"?
  22. Was that really the best take they got from Pillman and Zenk for their promo? Really good match with a hot crowd. I feel like Pillman and Zenk were the young babyface tag team they were hoping the Dynamic Dudes would be, but never were, and it's kind of a shame Pillman and Zenk didn't get a longer run as a team. Is this the last time WCW bothered to put heat on the MX and Cornette? Good angle that sadly went nowhere.
  23. Milestone alert: this is probably the first Hulk Hogan singles match I ever saw as a kid. Yet I have no nostalgia for this, as this match sucks. Dino Bravo was the shits. They actually do something to try to tease towards Wrestlemania, I guess because they realized that Hogan and Warrior had no real issue. This doesn't provide that real issue, but it's still nice that they're at least trying to give the people a reason to anticipate this nonsense.
  24. I think this is the Warrior promo Christian made fun of on the Warrior burial DVD. It's been a month since I've seen these Warrior/Hogan promos. They were not missed.
  25. Very basic match, Adams calls it simple since Austin is still pretty green. He shows good natural charisma, of course, but doesn't have a whole lot he can do in the ring yet. Adams cuts a good promo afterwards vowing revenge. This feud is just getting started and I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays out.
