Garvin does a great job at doing the cowardly role, but I can't help but feel a little uncomfortable about the whole thing, with the crowd chants and all. The match is good, not great, but still cool that this footage exists, whereas so many weekly house shows in other towns were never filmed.

[1990-03-08] Entertainment Tonight: Superstar Graham & Bruno Sammartino
Cox replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
According to Entertainment Tonight, if you use steroids, bad things will happen. What I don't get is, how did Graham hurt his hip from steroid use?- 12 replies

Man, does Doc botch that Figure Four something fierce. Between him and Luger, it really looks like Ric Flair is the only guy in wrestling these days who knows how to properly use the move. Hansen turning on Tenryu once again proves my theory...never trust white people. Hot post-match angle.

[1990-03-06-AJPW-Excite Series] Tiger Mask vs Kenta Kobashi
Cox replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
It's weird, almost disorienting, to see Skinny Misawa with mask wrestling Skinny Kobashi wearing red. It's hard for me to say Misawa is outworked here by Kobashi when Kobashi is the one who botches the neckbreaker. It feels more like Misawa is giving Kobashi most of the offense to let him shine before putting him away. This starts out pretty lousy but has a nice finishing sequence that gets the crowd into it. I don't regret watching it, but I probably won't remember watching it tomorrow either.- 16 replies

He was in the AWA at least two years before this managing Bad Company. Annoying promo by DDP. Was he supposed to be a heel or a babyface? He's cutting a promo on Paul E, but he's way too annoying to be a babyface.

[1990-03-03-ICW-TV] Interview: Paul E. Dangerously & Lethal Weapons
Cox replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
I love Paul E talking about how much he doesn't like Doug Gilbert. Really makes him seem like he's the rottenest of the rotten if even Paul E. doesn't like him. Good promo. -
What an odd music video for the Pink Assassin. It's pretty much just him beating up a dude with pedestrian looking offense whose tights read "Looking Good," I assume because "Looking Pedestrian" would have cost too much. Afterwards we get some good ol' fashioned gay bashing. Fun for the whole family! Diamond guy even spanks the guy, perhaps signaling that he's a self-loathing closeted gay dude?

[1990-03-03-ICW-TV] Tony Atlas, Paul E. Dangerously and Austin Idol
Cox replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
Another good Tony Atlas promo. I always thought he was a terrible promo but ICW is changing minds here. Now I wish he had gone to SMW in '93 to be managed by Tammy. Sure, it was a racist as hell idea, but we probably would have gotten some good promos out of it before Atlas was lynched, right? Typical Paul E promo, both building up Paul Orndorff and Austin Idol for a match that I presume never took place, mostly because I assume Idol no-showed. We close this segment out with a nice Idol music video that was probably used during his latest return to Memphis prior to this.- 10 replies

Where was this Tony Atlas the rest of his career? He wasn't known for being a good promo at all, but the heel promos on the set so far have been really good.

What does it say about me when I hear Jim Cornette is going to make a Michael J. Fox joke, and I automatically assume it's going to be a Parkinson's joke (besides the fact that Jim Cornette would have to be a fortune teller to know that Michael J. Fox would contract Parkinson's in 1990)? Good promos by Luger and Flair. I like that this is kind of a slow turn with Luger, that they aren't pretending he's undergone some radical life change going from heel to babyface, but letting his own actions speak for themselves in his turn. Pretty different from how he turned in WWF, where he steps off of helicopter and all traces of The Narcissist are gone. Flair does a typical Flair promo.

[1990-03-03-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler and Chris Champion
Cox replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
Poor Chris Champion. In all seriousness, while this is definitely a good angle, the problem that Loss talks about is that there is no babyface savior on the horizon. Sure, Jimmy Valiant wins the Unified title, but everybody in the territory knows Lawler is getting that back before long. I have to think the long-term idea was for Jeff Jarrett to win the Unified title, but they wound up going back to Lawler as a babyface before that happens. In the interim, it's making every babyface in the territory look weak when Lawler is able to destroy them all. There are momentary victories for the face side here and there but it's mostly Lawler dominating as a heel, and while he's really good as a heel promo, that's not a lot of fun.- 10 replies

I always wondered why Cade never got a chance. He had the height they wanted and was a good worker. He was not a good promo, but they gave more chances to guys who weren't any better on promos but worse in the ring because they were tall and had a good body, so I wonder why Cade never really went anywhere.

Honestly, I don't remember. My friend and I were checking our phones since Johan Santana was pitching the ninth inning of the no hitter when Vader vs Scorp hit the ring. Figures I miss out on that match and not the shitty Mil Mascaras match. Actually, I do remember one other thing from that show, which was an amazing eight man tag you should check out, with Star Man, two other dudes, and Koko B. Ware vs. The Sheik, two other dudes, and GEORGE SOUTH. For some reason, PWS brings in George South, I assume pays the man trans from North Carolina or wherever the fuck he lives now, doesn't advertise him (not that George South would have sold even a single ticket, but still, if you're going to pay a man trans to work your show, you might as well let people know he's going to be on the card) and then does like 2 minutes of mic work, then he and Koko don't do a single thing in the eight man tag, don't tag in, don't take a bump, nothing. I was in awe of it all. And let me know the next time you're up this way. I'm always down for an indy adventure.

I went to PWS Anniversary Show Night One, with every intention of going to Night Two, especially since PWS runs like a half hour from my house. But me and my friend thought Night One was so dreadful, we didn't even bother. This despite the fact that we didn't pay to get in, since we got there a half hour late and nobody bothered to make us buy a ticket, and despite missing the opening match, which was some Davey Richards tag team match that both of us would have likely hated, and despite Vader vs Scorpio being on the first show. To make matters worse, we're both Mets fans and we missed the first no hitter in Mets history to attend that debacle.

I thought I read somewhere that Gibson was actually getting paid more than Morton, at least later on in their careers. The reasoning being that Gibson could afford to hold out for more money, whereas Morton didn't have that luxury. I don't know if it's true anymore, but for a while Gibson was getting paid more, but it was because he was working as a trainer in OVW and was getting booked through the WWE office, which was charging a lot more than Morton was asking.

[1990-03-03-USWA-Memphis TV] Music Video: Southern Rockers / Jimmy Valiant spot
Cox replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
Wait, Brian Lee called these guys one of the best tag teams they've been in the ring with a few weeks ago? That...doesn't speak well for the tag team competition the Stud Stable were facing in Memphis around this time. -
You know Lawler traded free advertising on the show in exchange for either a free desk or a heavily reduced price on that desk, as any good carny would.

I like these little segments with Valiant. You get the feeling they were fucking around backstage after he cut his promos for the following week and they found a way to use them fucking around in the TV show the next week in an effective way.

For some reason, I really enjoyed Lawler claiming he should have been disqualified for throwing fire. Valiant's promo was suitably wacky.

[1990-03-03-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler vs Jimmy Valiant
Cox replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
So Valiant wins the USWA Unified title here in Memphis on 2/26, and then Lawler defends the belt in Texas on 3/2. I know none of the Memphis title changes were recognized in Memphis, but didn't PWI report on this stuff? Not sure what the point is in running Texas like in its own separate orbit, other than trying to blatantly expose the wrestling business to anybody in Dallas with a PWI subscription.- 10 replies
