The 3 way was far better than it had any chance of being. I thought it was a lock Roode was going to go over after the slingshot into the post. The 4 way was forgettable until the finish which was nuts namely due to Gable dumping Rusev, Aiden and Big E on their heads with those Chaos Theories.

Yeah, those looked pretty reckless, namely the one on Rusev and the one on Aiden.

[2000-01-15-MPPW-TV] Rico Constantino vs Steve Bradley
Edwin replied to soup23's topic in January 2000
I thought this was short, but good given the length. Rico getting blinded and whaling the ref. while he was blinded was clever. Unfortunately they didn't get to put much forward before the overbooked finish for such a short match. Rico looked far better here than in anything they ever let him put together in WWE. This really makes me wish he would have gotten a better role than the one he was given with that many limitations. -
[2000-01-15-NWA Wildside-TV] A.J. Styles vs Jesse Taylor
Edwin replied to soup23's topic in January 2000
This is the best indy match out of the bunch so far and it felt more like a Velocity sub-10 minute match than anything else. Taylor's corner strikes to Styles midsection looked fantastic. That punch he landed however looked awful as it looked more like a slap and less like a punch. Styles' selling was on point too. Even after he landed any type of offense, he would go back to selling them immediately. That dive from Styles over the top was fantastic and he quickly went back to selling his midsection as it did him more harm than good. The finish was a little unexpected being that it's an AJ Styles match. Quality TV match. -
[2000-01-15-NWA Southwest] Necro Butcher vs Biohazard
Edwin replied to soup23's topic in January 2000
This is the earliest footage I've ever seen of Necro. Him with hear and not balding, wearing the face paint, boots, tights and a t-shirt with sleeves on is compelling as by the time he began working northeast and became an IWA-MS regular getting hit in the face by VCRs being thrown at him by Mr. Insanity he was already balding, wore beat up sleeveless t-shirts and distressed jeans with blood stains from every garbage indy worker in the region and barefoot without face paint. This felt more ECW-ish than IWA-MS-ish sans the light bulbs on the bat. They keep it relatively simple with the typical type of weapon use you'd see somewhere like ECW than them going full blown nuts with crazy unprotected chair shots and powerbombs on the floor like what you would see in IWA-MS. The commentator is pretty bad and sounds like an over enthusiastic Gabe Sapolsky on the early ROH DVD's. Not a particularly great match by any chance, but it is remarkable seeing Necro before he broke out and began working more frequently all over the place. -
Same here. I never get the ZSJ love. I get he tries to be this grappling wizard, but it comes off really bad. He really doesn't know the basics of grappling and it's glaring obvious when you watch his work. I mean, if that's what your character is based off, then you have to at least show a sign that you know what you're doing. Honestly I feel this is an area where he can learn a thing or two from someone like Shayna Baszler. His strikes also seem relatively weak to me. That kind of reminds me of ROH putting out a promo video of Simon Gotch being this type of grappling wizard and in the same video showing him as a BJJ white belt and doing some white belt level drills. They could have at least brought a black belt on eBay for $20 and put it on him just for the video itself to at least try and make him come across as a legit grappler.

I'm not sure I'd say Eaton, Adams, Taylor or Valentine are underrated. A lot of fans like they and give their work a ton of praise.

Yikes... I agree with Tim, This wasn't good. The earliest footage of Quack I remember seeing was from the first CHIKARA show where he tagged with Reckless Youth and Don Montoya against CM Punk, Colt Cabana and Chris Hero which was some years after this. The other guys in this match I'm not familiar with and that maybe a good thing as they all look pretty bad. Harvey Whippleman coming out to manage a green heel tag team at a small indy show in front of 250 people in possibly a high school gym on the east coast in January 2000 is not something you would expect to happen. Aside from Quack who tries his best to keep this together, everyone else seems out of place and lost in the ring.

APW on Click Wrestle, those were the good ol' days. That was the source of extensive 30+ minute Super Dragon vs. TARO APW matches in a garage in front of 15 fans... This was a PWG-style go-go-go for pops type tag match. Basically them trading spots to pop the crowd. The Ballard Brothers seem like the early 2000's Young Bucks without the buffoonery, flash, flips and antics. Throw in more stiff strikes, endless thigh slapping, some head drops and flips and you have this would be a 2017 tag team match on a lot of indy promotions. Not my type of thing, but if you enjoy that type of PWG go-go-go style, then this is something you will likely enjoy.

This was a pretty standard heel vs. babyface tag match. That ref. botch was pretty bad, but that didn't stop Dragon from hitting the massive moonsault from the top rope followed by the massive dive over the top from Spanky. He's lucky he didn't pull a Taker and land on his head, because it looked like he was going to. That spear from Bonecrusher was beautiful. He rightfully manhandled flimsy Spanky with it. Nothing really going out of your way worth seeing.

[2000-01-08-MPPW-TV] Trailer Park Trash vs Steve Bradley (Street Fight)
Edwin replied to soup23's topic in January 2000
I'm not familiar with Trailer Park Trash, but he seems like a dirtier version of Sandman (if that is even feasible to think of). Steve Bradley's work I'm familiar with as he had a lengthy run after this with IWA in Puerto Rico and this match explains a lot of it. His run there had several hardcore matches as he held the hardcore title there and it featured a lot of stuff similar to this. Despite being given a limited amount of time, they worked real around it and didn't make this feel rushed. Bradley hitting a big move before stumbling outside looking for the table and setting up the table was a nice touch. A lot of guys struggle to do this and just hit whatever and run to grab the table to setup their spot while the other guy is just laying there waiting for the table spot to get setup. This wasn't the case here though. I liked how they opted not to get juice as they were restricted on time and didn't really go over board with the excessive use of weapons which was the case in a lot of hardcore matches from around this time. This would have benefited had it gone on a little longer. That being said, this was fine. -
This felt rushed as they were given very little time to work and they just were trying to get as much in as possible. Conway is very bland and made a lot of things feel flat. He also got hit with a German suplex for the finish which was enough to keep him down for the count, yet he was able to pop up from it just fine after the fact.
-
This wasnt very good... All 5 guys just brawled and hit each other with weapons for the sake of hitting themselves with weapons and then they began hitting some moves and eliminations were rushed. Not as bad a garbage match as the previous Ian Rotten vs. Mad Man Pondo fiasco from earlier in the month though.

This felt like an extensive Sunday Night Heat match. Nothing really special to write about. K-Krush was having the same type of match hes been having for ages when hes set to go over.

This was relatively short and simple. Cabana looks way better than Punk here. His crowd work is fantastic. He also has all of the basics down. His pin with his feet on Punk while he was doing push ups was fantastic. Punk looked green and somewhat sloppy. Also according to the commentator Mae Young had been in the wrestling business for eight decades which means she must have been in her 90s by this time which is obviously bizarrly inaccurate.
-
This was exactly what you would expect it to be early 2000s Jr.s go-go-go wrestling. Ric Balde is obviously a Jeff Hardy fan. His ring attire somewhat resembles the Hardy Boyz Brood attire and he does the Swanton Bomb a lot. Low Ki despite still being a rookie, looked polished. Kis counter suplex into a modified armbar and the Ki Crusher through the table were neat, albeit kicking out of the Ki Crusher spot was way to much. Blade botching the legdrop dive to the outside through the table is the type of thing you would expect in a typical Ric Blade match. Him popping back up and going for it again made it worse imo. In 2017, this would main event the majority of indy shows. Although in their defense, this had way less blatant thigh slapping than the majority of matches you see anywhere now-a-days. Not particularly good.

[2000-01-08-CZW-Bloodbath 2000] Ian Rotten vs Madman Pondo
Edwin replied to soup23's topic in January 2000
That was all kinds of bad and I dont mean bad in a good way. It was basically them shoot cutting each other with a pair of scissors and hitting each other with unprotected weapon shots for the sake of getting a reaction. Theres nothing to like here. Awful. -
[2000-01-01-TWA-Total Impact TV] American Dragon vs Spanky
Edwin replied to Loss's topic in January 2000
Yikes... These guys grew a ton from these. Flimsy Spanky vs. masked young American Dragon. Its amazing seeing how much Dragon namely grew from these days. Now he has a ton of personality, back then not so much. Spanky looked frail physically, but he showed more personality here. The big dive to the outside, Dragons stiff forearms to the side of Spankys head on the top and the counter wheel barrel with to Dragon Suplex were the highlights for me. Definitely benefited keeping this short. Far from being a great match, but far from being horrendous. -
Reigns, Styles and Braun are the top 3 guys for me with Pete Dunne possibly being #4. Reigns on a weekly basis steps up with quality matches and on PPV's he really steps it up a notch. Styles too and I would probably place him above Reigns simply because he got the best he managed to break the Lesnar formula and got the best match out of him that anyone has been able to in a straight up singles match, plus he also got the best possible match out of Jinder too. Also lets not forget his performance against Bálor. Plus the Cena match from early this year. Braun has been improving massively since last year and deserves a mention. He looked amazing in the the previously mentioned 4 way. His performance in the singles match against was underwhelming, but that's not to his fault though simply because the booking for it sucked. Dunne has had the great series with British Strong Style and the Gargano match from TakeOver. I haven't seen much of his indy work from this year, but I saw his match with Travis Banks from PROGRESS this year, for example, was way, way too much. I haven't watched much indy wrestling this year, but how does everyone feel about possibly bringing Keith Lee as a top 5 in discussion? I've seen some of his PWG and EVOLVE work and he's been fantastic. That match with Dijak from WM weekend at EVOLVE was pretty great iirc. His match with Ricochet from the same weekend was pretty fantastic too. Possibly the best match I've seen Ricochet in ever. The Leo Rush match from that weekend was fantastic too. He may have been the best worker from that entire WM weekend with back-to-back fantastic performances with a variety of opponents.

MLW uploaded their most recent show for free on YouTube: If anything, just skip to the main event -- Darby Allin and Jimmy Havoc vs. Shane Strickland and John Hennigan in a hardcore match. Also Matt Riddle vs. Tom Lawlor was the opening match, but I got their late and missed it, so I'm not sure how good it is, but it is intriguing on paper.

Yup. Shane McMahon levels of bad.
