Random aside when reading this thread. Dory as booker in Crockett wasn't looked at as an extremely bright dude by the office. I heard Cornette tell a story that Dory once left a meeting and walked into a closet & closed the door behind him, only to emerge a couple minutes later & walked out as if nothing happened. Whoever else was in the office just looked at each other like what's up with this guy? Not sure if he was stoned or just "slow" but that story always comes to mind in regards to Dory.

Did Morton offer anything new other than his usual stuff of "we sold out everywhere we went"?

What do you think of Bruce Mitchell?
WrestlingPower replied to BigBadMick's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Oh yeah the heat was huge at the time. There was also a column by either Keller or Mitchell on the SMW "race riot" in Wise, VA that I guess was during the Gangstas era. Can't remember if that was before or after the column mentioned above but he was quite riled up around that time. I think there were several threatening phone calls to Keller. At the May 1995 SMW show in Charlotte, Cornette & Landel actually came out of the locker room while the show was going on and were headed into the stands to physically confront someone believed to be Mitchell until someone (Hildebrand?) intercepted them and said "I don't think that's him", realizing the situation could get bad. Mitchell most definitely was at the show and I think that was part of the column mentioned above as he wrote some line about Sandy Scott "trying to divide the loaves & fishes" when counting the gate at the show. I think Cornette's point was so much of it was mean spirited, nitpicky & personal attacks more than constructive criticism. Cornette was dating the aforementioned Heather at the time which is what really hit home. -
Listening to the old newsletters one, not even 1/2 way thru but commenting anyway. I'd be curious how to define "outlaw promotion" vs. what has come to be known as indies. Local indies started around here (VA) in like 1988. I never heard them referred to as "outlaws" as I don't think there was an attempt to buck the establishment or challenge the NWA or anything. Curious where you draw the line. Maybe it's just a semantics thing where literally anyone running NWA towns before mid-80s were outlaws.

The Jim Cornette Experience
WrestlingPower replied to flyonthewall2983's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Great show this week as Missy Hyatt grills Jim on lots of 70s & 80s territorial questions. Lots of business talk on the various SE/Continental splits & how that led to SMW. Those boycotting really should listen to this one. -
Good Will Wrestling: Fixing the WWE Part One
WrestlingPower replied to soup23's topic in Publications and Podcasts
This was barely touched on in this show, maybe part 2 can partially rundown the NXT roster & fantasy book how to introduce & use some on the main roster. Curious to hear folks discuss how Zayn could actually be used instead of just saying "he needs to be on TV yesterday".- 53 replies

Wrestling Culture Episode 56
WrestlingPower replied to puropotsy's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Great show. I popped over the Piper conversation just because my mind carried this thru to the Hogan era. Not that I would have imagined Piper being capable of a 7 year reign, but how fascinating of a conversation would it be if Piper had won the belt as a face, turned heel, and led into the Hogan era and Hogan's big triumph being over him for the belt. Granted then you may have lost your hook for the first Mania. But fascinating to think about. I guess you could also have the conversation of using Piper as the replacement for Iron Sheik & having him keep the belt until Mania where Hogan wins it, though that discounts your hook of Mr. T, Cyndi Lauper, etc. -
The Jim Cornette Experience
WrestlingPower replied to flyonthewall2983's topic in Publications and Podcasts
She records the show & conferences in the guests, that's her contribution. Jim has said on multiple occassions he can't dump her because of that. There have been a pretty good run of shows lately though with Orndorff, Young, Sullivan, Matysik. I do wish Cornette would drop the weekly bit of insulting Court Bauer for charging so little for site membership -
Shoots Review and Preview thread
WrestlingPower replied to BruiserBrody's topic in Megathread archive
Watched the Breaking Kayfabe with Cornette. The first hour was kind of monotonous as it was all about Russo & TNA with a lot that had been covered before. Then it was nearly 2 hours detailing (and I do mean detailing) his latest stint with ROH, from helping to get Sinclair to buy them all the way thru his last week there. He got so wound up & cut such scathing promos on the front office there, that Sean Oliver I think felt scared & thought he was mad at HIM. For a hardcore ROH fan though this is pretty much must-see to understand all that went on backstage there & who's fault it was. I can't help but wonder what may have changed since he left as ROH seems to be in a much better place now and willing to do more things that he tried to get them to do while he was there. -
I don't have time to watch much these days unfortunately. Current Favorite Wrestler To Watch: if we're talking modern and guys I actually might get to see on live TV, I'll go with Luke Harper, still can't believe they let him do topes Last Fun Match You Saw: Claudio/Hero 40ish minute match from PWG May of 2011 where the top rope broke Wrestler You Want To See More Of: Wyatt Family, Sami Zayn as far as active people I mark out for, don't have time to watch "undiscovered" guys Last Live Show Attended: OMEGA snoozefest in Roanoke Rapids, NC Match You Are Looking Forward To Watching Soon The Most: ROH PPV should arrive while I'm on vacation, wasn't able to watch live or get the replay Last Fun Interview/Promo You Saw: just watched Breaking Kayfabe with Jim Cornette which was a long promo on how effed ROH was while he was there Last Interesting Thing You Read About Wrestling: don't know Last Worthwhile Wrestling Podcast You Heard: I listen to a lot, today was latest Bauer & Pollock which I find much more enjoyable than Observer as far as analyzing news (plus I no longer have a sub) Most Fun You've Had Watching Wrestling Lately: that PWG ASW8 disc, also the whole OMEGA Cameron DVD was amazing, probably THE best non-ROH/PWG/Gabe indy show in YEARS

Does anyone still watch wrestling on videotapes?
WrestlingPower replied to BigBadMick's topic in Pro Wrestling
I'm still semi-actively converting stuff but that's the only time I use a VCR. I have 4 or so, one I got at a yardsale recently. Some stuff plays better on different machines so you just never know when you need other options around for VCRs. I still convert them onto a DVD recorder with hard drive where you can shorten/edit/divide whatever right on there. I never bothered to figure out capturing stuff onto the computer. I have 3 of the Panasonic HDD recorders in the house. I've done a fair bit of converting lately for yearbook projects and I've recently started in on the RF white box shoots since those are easy to do. Getting rid of the old VHS is rather hard to do though. The only stuff I'm keeping is my original TV comp tapes and anything I filmed myself. -

I got the RnR documentary that Ellbow Productions did. I contributed a bunch of SMW footage to the project. Disc 1 is the documentary, disc 2 appears to be stories & interview stuff that didn't make the documentary, disc 3 contains 7-8 matches. The documentary is pretty basic, not as exciting as the Crockett one. There were a few stories (maybe 3-4 total) from Cornette, Morton & Gibson that I hadn't heard before. Aside from that if you are familiar at all with that era and their careers and have heard shoots from guys from that era before, there's not a ton of new material here. In fact I think their pre-RnR days covered both here and on Corino's Old School shoot is the most interesting stuff just because it hasn't been beaten into the ground & told over & over. So yeah, I guess I give this a moderate recommendation. The documentary seems kind of repetitive and not must-see at all since that era & subject matter has been covered so many times, but there's nothing at all wrong with the documentary, the production, or choices of guys to interview. Morton is pretty subdued & is good at breaking down details but you do get that typical "we sold out everywhere we went" vibe from both. -

The Jim Cornette Experience
WrestlingPower replied to flyonthewall2983's topic in Publications and Podcasts
The Sullivan shows are a prime example of wrestlers talking to fellow wrestlers get the most out of guys. I'm only 30 minutes into this and Corny got more out of both Sullivan & Orndorff than any other interviews I've heard from them. Also a reason I enjoy the Steve Corino "Old School" series from Highspots. Regarding Keirn, I haven't seen a ton of Fabs stuff but I don't remember either one standing out above the other. The best Keirn stuff I've seen was on the DVDVR New Japan set. I have a match he had with Flair from like 1986 (which I realize is well after the point he could have been Backlund) that I just can't bring myself to watch. -

The Sullivan show may be the best yet, this one actually has me wanting to sign up for the VIP to hear more. -
I attended Omega Championship Wrestling on Friday 5/9 at the Royal Palace Theater in Roanoke Rapids, NC. Attendance estimated at 300. 1-Michael Yamaha b Jake Manning Typical Southern style opening match 2-D’Arcy Dixon b Mia Svensson w/ Special Ref Reby Sky I’ve seen much worse but both seemed rather inexperienced 3-CW Anderson (w/Christopher Carmichael) b Adam Page Decent enough action in between the stalling & playing to the crowd. Carmichael was heavily involved 4-Shane Helms b Lodi (w/Deandre Jackson) Lodi’s bodyguard/trainee/second Jackson attacked after the match but the heels were run off by 2 big dudes from Lizard Lick Towing, whatever that is (low level reality show?) 5-Lee Valiant (sub for Xsiris)/Ric Converse b Caprice Coleman/Sweet Dreams (sub for Cedric Alexander who was called on short notice to fly to the ROH show a day early) Match of the night. Sweet Dreams turned on Caprice after the match, laying him out with a clothesline, because why not? 6-PWI International Hv Champ Zane Dawson b Christian York Part of this was an extended brawl in the crowd, which like in the Helms match, served to excite the crowd without the performers having to actually do a whole lot. 7-Matt Hardy b NWA North American Hv Champ Kahagas (w/Christopher Carmichael) in a non-title match with a Twist of Fate while Kahagas was draped from the top rope. Carmichael hit the ring after and chaos ensued. Somewhere in here, he took the Twist of Fate from Matt, Dawson hit the ring, splashed Matt and speared Matt & Helms. York ran in and brawled out with Dawson. It was a fun end to the show. Overall this show can be judged based on 2 criteria. It seemed to entertain and satisfy the masses, the casual family crowd looking for a fun evening out. The hardcore/workrate crowd seemed quite disappointed in the athleticism delivered for the high ticket prices as it was very much a Southern indy show with more playing to the crowd & smoke & mirrors than a lot of highspots, outside of the tag match and moments in the CW/Page match. Given that OMEGA has traditionally been built around high athleticism and coming off their high point of the Hardys/Briscoes show, this is not an essential DVD.
