Wow, what a beautiful wrestling match that is the most unheralded classic of the entire 1990's All Japan run. In fact, I think I had only seen this one once before this morning. I loved the narrative of Kobashi being the grumpy parent that was the wild, rambunctious child that tried to do things his way. Now, that he has a protege of his own, he just wants the kid to go to bed already. This makes sense in the way that Kobashi threw bombs at the hint of Akiyama targeting the leg and his sleeper and finishing sequence trying to put Akiyama out. Akiyama targeting the knee is beautiful stuff and pushes the limits of seeing him as having a chance. They built this up well by Kawada finally defeating Misawa and then losing to Kobashi. Would Kobashi suffer the same fate? I find it amazing how invested the crowd was and this felt like a huge stepping stone for Akiyama to use for the future. Fantastic stuff and the 1998 All Japan year continues to run on. (****3/4)

I thought this was pretty fun on the clips with Izumida getting a rare big shot on the big show and I enjoyed his diving headbutt from the top. Glad to see Takayama slowly but surely start to rise in the All Japan hierarchy.

The Beulah thing was the weirdest part of this and they inter spliced clips of her including her about to kiss Kimona before they showed her down on the ground with Tommy wailing. Speaking of wailing, what the fuck was Tommy drowning on about. This legit may be bigger wrestlecrap than anything we have seen in WCW up to this point this year. Dreadful stuff.

I really dislike Taz and the heckler as it shows the mob mentality of the ECW audience to an extent with even fucking hat guy wanting the guy to get the hook. I got to say that this Taz build up while presented strongly has been missing a lot of the intangibles pretty much the whole way through and how many times can him and Bam Bam go at it at this point?

FRANCINE!!! is all there is to this. Douglas with the arm injury has been troublesome for me as his promos havent hit me as well as others and he feels like he is taking up way too much space.

Austin gets a huge pop of course coming out. Taker runs down halfway through this with a chair and we get the predictable finish of him swinging a chair and hitting Kane but its possible he could have been aiming for AUstin. Austin doesn't take any chance and kills both Mankind and Taker with chairs to end the show. This was pretty simple but highly effective stuff to go into the PPV (*1/4)

Good Raw match reminiscient of the sprinkling of good matches we saw in 1997. Rock and X Pac wouldn't have been a bad PPV match as a bridge between the Shamrock feuds and the HHH one if it would have worked out. I liked the idea here that Rock looked strong being able to kick out off a ton of interference spots and he was wrestling more as a confident heel. HBK on commentary switches by the second from annoying to damn good during this match. Afterwards, we get another Nation vs. DX brawl with not a ton of heat and HHH convinces a woman to show her breasts in the audience. (**1/2)

Will is joined by Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame voters Kris Zellner and David Bixenspan. Kris and Bix make the case for why Dick Murdoch should be in the Hall of Fame. Legendary feuds? Check. Major influence in the industry? Check? Major headliner across multiple territories? Check. Great matches? Check. After spending 90 minutes on Dick Murdoch, Bix and Kris spend some time looking at some other potential Hall of Famers such as the Rock N Roll Express. http://placetobenation.com/good-will-wrestling-the-legend-of-dick-murdoch/

I'm nowhere near the curmudgeon that Parv is ( ) but I also can't stand the majority of indie wrestling commentators I've heard. Why would you call wrestling as if it's a work? I will never be someone that touts Marc Nulty as an all time great announcer but I do think for the type of promotion that ROH was trying to create, the commentary style fits that. Now, there are inherent problems in that they tried to push heels at points to break this mold like giving Xavier the world title and this is such a niche and narrow view that they boxed themselves into never being mainstream, but the commentary being snarky and assuming the audience is smart did and still do appeal to some if done in certain ways.
-
This will be an aesthetic thing with you Parv but be prepared to loathe the crowd and announcers for this stuff. The crowd will be chanting fairly consistently and the announcers will freely talk about MOTY and other META stuff to appease the audience that was watching at the time. Jarring presentation wise to go from late 70's WWWF to that but just the way it is.

Shit, that 1986 Leon White vs. Hansen match is great.
-
I think Parv articulated his point well with the Paul Orndorff example. No need piling on the guy and I have given him a list of names that I have complete confidence he will at least give a curiosity look at before the project is over. Choices will have to be made in this project. I wouldn't begrudge Parv for not seeking out Ricochet unless YOU are willing to look at all the world of sport guys OJ dropped and the joshi guys and the lucha guys, etc. If you want to hold Parv up to a standard over everyone else with revisiting stuff, he consistently jumps over that hurdle and is willing to budge on his opinions.

No way, I think Hansen's range is very underrated. I think sometimes being diverse in matches for wrestlers means he was in a great technical match here and a blood brawl there. Hansen vs. Backlund in Japan was worked with a lot of holds, his match vs. Andre was as good as a spectacle match as you can have, and we already know he can have crazy brawls. Beyond that though, Hansen had a knack of having really engaging storylines and sell jobs throughout his matches. I have watched a lot of 90's wrestling at this point and the 4/18/91 tag and the Carny 94 match vs. Taue still stick out because of how Hansen sold damage on one of his body parts. That is a big plus for me in regards to Stan.

Low Ki Mike Quackenbush Austin Aries Nigel McGuinness Those are the four I could see you possible throwing on your list and I would recommend watching them along with Chris Hero, Bryan, Claudio and Generico (even though I don't think you will be much of a fan, he will get more high end votes than almost everyone else).

Concrete, DylanZero, Marty Sleeze and Venegas can start a young punk stable.
-
I think you are being too tough parv. I don't think anyone would consider Quack for their top 5 unless it was an extreme aberration. Where WOS is a huge blind spot for us both, I see no reason why Quack, Styles etc can't at least be in the conversation with the tier two European workers for a spot on your list. I do think at least not watching a primer of Indy stuff is doing a disservice to yourself.

You should do one for HBK to for his WWF/WWE run.

Amazing post Paul, wonderful stuff.

Marry this woman! In all serious, welcome aboard and I am glad that the GWE project seems to be inflicting some new blood both from a poster standpoint and an age demographic.

Thanks OJ, looking to dive into this stuff soon.
