Maybe we can have an end of show Parv anger barometer. I do think people like Backlund work him up more than others because others like Bob whereas I don't see anyone championing for Strongbow. Parv still felt the need to throw a cheapshot his way in this show though.

The Biggest PPV Match Of All Time That Will (probably) Never Happen
soup23 replied to Fantastic's topic in Pro Wrestling
I fully expected this to be Pac vs. Mayweather bullshit part 57. I don't think we have seen any evidence that Cain is a great draw and he refuses to make the vendetta personal so I don't see how this would make the biggest PPV of all time. I think it Austin was in fact game for Mania and Hogan can go like hinted at in the Observer than a Mania with Rock or Austin vs. HHH, Brock vs. Reigns or Bryan, and Hogan vs. Cena would have a good shot. -
Thanks for the thoughts Paul. So what does WK look like so far? 1. Okada vs. Tana 2. Nakamura vs. Shibata 3. Ishii vs. ? 4. Junior title 5. Bullet Club Stuff (I think a blowoff in a 5 vs. 5 elimination style match would be a neat nod to the past)

Those 99 matches made me really fearful of going back to watch his 2001 run which I enjoyed at the time a good deal especially that Low Ki match from ECW and the four way involving Scoot Andrews and someone else I am blanking on. I don't see him making my list as when we get down to the bottom portion, I may have guys technically worse than Daniels but who I connected with more. As a point of reference, I would certainly have Dr. Tom or Smothers ahead of him.

Thoughts on the booking? This seems like a completely bizarre choice. The Tanahashi vs. Okada match series has had high acclaim from some (myself I really like KOPW and the Okada first title win the best) but it will only be 15 months since their last match and that was a year where they had 4 marquee matches together.

Cena's Mania placement has been utterly bizarre at times and I love the guy. 2005: vs. JBL - Disappointing match and moment 2006: vs. HHH - This was an important match and a very good one 2007: vs. HBK - Great match in the mix of my favorite Cena run 2008: vs. Orton & HHH - I think this gets devalued slightly as in 2008, it was still rare for these three guys to be in the same ring at the same time. Orton vs. Cena feels entirely played out now but they only had their first signature title match at SummerSlam 2007. Still, this is clearly behind Flair vs. HBk for importance on this show and probably Edge vs. Taker as well. 2009: Vs. Big Show & Edge - Really disappointing throw away match here as there was complete potential to something special with Cena around this time either having one blow off match singles vs. Edge, a "dream" match vs. Jeff Hardy or building up someone new like Punk. 2010: vs. Batista - Nice match and #2 for the top ahead of Jericho vs. Edge IMO 2011: vs. Miz - Really bad performance from Cena, maybe his worst in a big match. 2012: vs. Rock - Huge drawing match and a good one 2013: vs. Rock - Huge drawing match and a bad one 2014: vs. Wyatt - This is where Cena takes a role working on the undercard as none of the main players in the promotion fit him. I enjoyed the match which I know you didn't Joe so I wouldn't count this one against Cena. Typing all of that out, it is really not as bad as I thought going in as Cena was in the top match 4 out of 10 years and I would say in the top three nine out of ten with the exception being last years Mania (main event, Brock vs. Lesnar and HHH vs. Bryan all bigger). I think the biggest thing is that Cena doesn't have that ONE classic match from Mania on his resume, but even the match quality isn't terrible here as I would rank six out of these ten matches at *** or above. The best match is probably vs. HBK and that is hindered by them having the England match a few weeks later that was better. Fantasy booking note but I still feel their was some big missed opportunities where Cena could have faced Batista for the first time at WM 26, faced Hardy at Wm 25, and faced Taker at WM 29. All of these options were available with minimal changes and I think it would have resulted in better results overall for Cena.

Briscoe Brothers vs. All Night Express from Night 2 of the WrestleMania shows in Atlanta is criminally underrated. A great southern style brawl where Rhett Titus and Jay bleed like crazy. 3 years later, I think it was the best match I saw that weekend and think it got devalued for not being a traditional ROH match.

[1998-08-02-WWF-Sunday Night Heat] Interview: Steve Austin

Austin on Sunday Night Heat. Huh. I didn't really like AUstin blowing off the beer can gesture. This show seemed pretty disorganized and disheveled overall. -
[1998-08-02-WWF-Sunday Night Heat] Interview: Bart Gunn

Bart has no charisma. How many segments on this show involves guys hitting/flirting with girls. -
[1998-08-02-WWF-Sunday Night Heat] Val Venis and Mario Lopez

I had no idea why Val was picked here to get taken down by Mario as a face and he looked terrible and owned by the Pacific Blue star. -
[1998-08-02-WWF-Sunday Night Heat] Show opening / Interview: Vince McMahon

VInce introduces us to Heat and brings out Shane for commentary accompanied by two females. I actually forgot that this started on USA. -
[1998-08-02-NJPW-G1 Climax] Shinya Hashimoto vs Kazuo Yamazaki
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1998
Sad that the G-1 is over already as I really enjoyed the matches added. This was a great final that packed a lot of punch into 15 minutes. Yamazaki really attacked the leg and I loved his crossbody to the outside setting up the leg submission tease finish. The build to the finish here was great with Hashimoto giving a classic comeback and hitting and absolutely beautiful elbow drop from the top. He puts Yama away with a brainbuster to the delight of the crowd. (****)- 11 replies

This was a good promo by a gloating Hales. It has been nice seeing him get one up over Lawler today. Christopher offers to take Lawler's place in the match vs. BJT.
-
Nice piledriver right on the studio and King sells it well as Hales has his revenge now. I guess Dave is on vacation as Corey has to narrate this for us.

[1998-08-01-MPPW-TV] Jerry Lawler and Billy Joe Travis
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1998
Lawler sure does love that control. I agree that the ratings talk wasn't too interesting here and having the highest ratings on a four month show isn't the biggest acomplishment. Today, BIll Dundee faces Koko b Ware and Lawler faces BJT. -
After last weeks amazing week of audio, a whole load of shit this week.

I know I have spent a lot of time championing for Taue but the retirement ceremony as a talking point seems odd. It would be like discarding Patera for his 88 WWF run. I know stature is seen differently in their culture but perhaps someone with better knowledge (OJ perhaps?) can comment on how big a factor this would really play into the mindset of voters from that region. I also completely disagree with Brock as a draw without the MMA stuff and don't know what he could be pointing to there. He has raised SummerSlam one year and one B show PPV, how this equates to an established time on top, I'll never know.

Last year, around 300 people voted in the Modern US/Canada category given the 60% threshold and the people that got in.

Arn, Tully, Regal, Finlay are my first four off of the slam dunk list currently.

Made a prelim list of slam dunk guys. These are guys I feel I have seen enough of and there is around 3% chance or less they wouldn't be in my top 100. I was selective in not adding any joshi, WOS or hardly any shoot guys as I feel those are the areas with my biggest blind spots. 1. Misawa 2. Kawada 3. Kobashi 4. Taue 5. Atlantis 6. Bobby Eaton 7. Bret Hart 8. Buddy Rose 9. Chris Benoit 10. El Dandy 11. Daniel Bryan 12. Eddie Guerrero 13. Genechiro Tenryu 14. El Hijo Del Santo 15. Jerry Lawler 16. John Cena 17. Jumbo Tsurtua 18. Jun Akiyama 19. Jushin Liger 20. Kiyoshi Tamura 21. Negro Casas 22. Nick Bockwinkel 23. Randy Savage 24. Rey Mysterio Jr. 25. Ric Flair 26. Ricky Morton 27. Ricky Steamboat 28. Riki Choshu 29. El Satanico 30. Shawn Michaels 31. Shinya Hashimoto 32. Stan Hansen 33. Tatsumi Fujinami 34. Terry Funk 35. Volk Han 36. Vader
