His stuff as Dr. X would count and I cant fathom an argument as to why it wouldn't. We are voting for the greatest wrestler, not the greatest one gimmick.

Thought of you Childs when I saw this thread pop up. I have liked Hayabusa better than you but if someone like Dr. Tom probably won't be on my list, Busa sure as hell wont.

"Wrestling was smarter back then" is just shit people say. Mostly here & DVDVR. Today is tomorrow's good old days. Everything used to better than it is now. Everything was better when we were kids. When it was pure, before it all changed. As much as I love old wrestling, and enjoy some aspects of it more, I find it hard to take people who completely dismiss modern wrestling on the basis that it was better then, whenever then is. I often think those people don't actually lie wrestling, but rather their memories of wrestling. Which is totally cool, but it really makes it hard to take people seriously when the dismiss comments like joe's offhand. I hate the generalization of the kids argument. If that was the case, Hogan would be my #1 and Jake the Snake my #2. No one in this thread to my knowledge grew up as a kid idolizing Lawler. I thought of Lawler as the preverted announcer on Raw that had a feud with Bret Hart when I was seven. Looking at the last SC poll, Lawler did pretty poorly all things considered and had #1 overall vote. Wrestling has great stuff consisting of it now. WrestleMania 30 was the greatest live show I have been with. August 2013 was NOT the best month in wrestling history IMO and I watched in current time with other months I would have above it but it was a great month. You have said Daniel Bryan may be your #1. I applaud that. I just don't want someone to be labeled as a curmudgeon for picking Flair, Misawa, Lawler, etc.

Seriously, this felt like WCW desperately trying to win the Monday night rating instead of selling the PPV. Malone has already embarrassed Hogan so why bother buying the show besides Rodman and Malone going at it. The promo they give afterwards was really rough and a surprise as DDP seems more of a clowning mood than wanting to be serious.

It is true that Kane looks like he doesnt have one inch to bleed from. I don't like the decision to get the title off of Austin so quick although it does seem like it was McMahon's turn to win one back but this felt more like Undertaker creating the circumstance instead of Vince being the puppet master.

A complete visceral match that is not great in the scheme of what we apply to the interworkings of a great match but an absolutely gutty and nutty performance by Foley that was transcendent in pushing him over with more mainstream appeal. Some people say they become immune to the first bump but it still looked incredibly violent here. I have no idea what to rank this but it is certainly memorable and the sacrifice is impeccable. I liked the finish of this match a good bit and it showed how Rock was starting to really get over with the fans as his floatover DDT gets nice reaction. HHH on commentary is as snarky as ever. Shamrock wins which feels like a big victory and a good way for him to win the feud without winning the IC belt.

A very somber Lawler says that he couldn't get the job done and is now going back to announcing at WWF Hales is surprised as everyone else is.

3,500 isnt bad and the hype was good. I could have done without the music played during the package but the match highlights looked pretty damn good with Lawler bleeding, hitting a piledriver and Kane getting violent with Stacy before they censor everything. Cornette as Kane's manager here is odd but he gives a good spirited promo.

It's so rare that I see a match that may be a top 20 match for me of all time for the first time now. I don't say that to seem cocky but usually in these yearbooks, I have to look for hidden gems. That Aja vs. Yoshida match for example was a very good match and fun to watch. Occasionally you even get ***** matches from me like the Toshie GAEA match from 1997. However, while this match did have hype going in and it wasn't an under the radar match, it blew me away. The athleticism and stamina of both men to grapple this furiously for the entire 30 minutes and make it feel like 7-8 was completely exhilarating. I loved the exchanging of heel hooks and when Tamura opened up with the palm strikes.. The finish was even in doubt as the choke could have ended the match in the final seconds and if not that, than surely the cross armbreaker. Draws can be hard to feel fully satisfying at times but this is was a clinic in how to do this type of wrestling and a beautiful thing to watch unfold. *****

This was fine and I guess the indication was they stabbed or rammed Victory's leg into the locker. I am still unsure how I feel about Gertner overall as I like him at points but get a trying too hard vibe at other times.

Sable was able to get back into Vinces favor and rejoin the company. Austin is wearing his swank 3:16 baseball jersey shirt here. Pretty iconic soundbyte promo of him saying Kanes ass belongs to Stone Cold when you come after his belt. The bit with the blood dropping provided a good visual and I liked that they didn't touch this week after their heated exchange the week before on top of the cell. I am still missing Vince in these segments but the build to KOTR for the top stuff remained strong.

I liked this promo from Mick as Mankind. I love how much depth we have seen from him in his character work in 1998 as this is completely different tonally from the Dude promos and even his Mick Foley stuff when Vince fired him. I am looking forward to revisiting Hell in a Cell.

This is one of those little tidbits I wasn't familiar of but was interesting going back to see that Edge caused a serious injury in his first match. Everything he did up to that point was fine. (1/2 *)

I liked Snow calling out the fact that Christopher was King's son. The chicken fingers joke got over like a fart in church. This has been one attitude era storyline that has not aged well in retrospect at all.
-
I liked using the brutality of the last match to sell the Cell for this match. I know how Foley talks about in his book this feud seemed kind of dead with both guys beat up and they had feuded for so long, but it does feel fresh and revitalized to me with their interactions so far.

Hogan and DDP should have really had a title match at GAB to set up the tag. It would have been cool if they could have had Rodman do a run in to cheaply give HOgan the win. Bischoff and Liz together is just uneasy watching but Bischoff does feel back to his good sleazy self in this promo as he is trying to reclaim some of his 1997 glory days. I do see Charles' point that Hogan has too many pots cooking as he has the Bash tag match coming up, impending feud with Goldberg, Wolfpac, Piper. Too much shit going on that dilutes things.

I think most people that criticized the TM series were generally receptive of the Fujinami match. I know for one Dylan really likes that Fujinami match. Joe talked about Dynamite and lumped him in with Sabu and that I think is what works against Dynamite for me. I wasn't around this time watching him breakthrough so I don't have an opinion of being transfixed by seeing this type of groundbreaking wrestling for the first time. All I have is 80's sets where Hamada is doing faster bumps and more athletic stuff in 1980 than DK and TM were doing in 83. Therefore, DK is a tough sell for me even though I wouldn't call him a dog shit worker. He just isn't transcendent and that is not a parameter I wish to vote on in this list in the first place.

Bit confused by what is being argued by Jumbo being inconsistent in the 80's. I havent seen every Jumbo match like the All Japan committee members but I have seen a ton of his matches that did/didn't make the cut. Jumbo had an all time series vs. Tenryu that may be my pick of feud of the 80's for any promotion He had another great all time tag feud w/ Tenryu vs. Choshu/Yatsu He had the best match of the 80's for Kerry von Erich He had an absolute classic match vs. Flair and it isn't like the 81/82 matches are chopped liver He had great matches with Race (82), Misawa (88), Mil Mascaras (82) and Murdoch (80) Very good series of stuff vs. Martel The only two negatives I could see is his single matches vs. Choshu ( I do like the 1 hour draw but its about ***1/2 instead of the ****+ I was hoping for) and Hansen With Hansen, I do think the 86 match is great and the rest of the series is at least good but again it seems like this is a knock solely on Jumbo. Jumbo and Hansen will probably be compared at points during this process so why does Hansen get a free pass for the series being disappointing. I see Jumbo as a top ten lock for me and adore the guy. I don't think many are rubbing his face through the mud here but I don't want a sense of picking a safe pick, being a wrong one in completing this project.

I really like Dr. Tom but can't strike the notion of "good hand" when used to describe him. He feels a bit like Arn Anderson lite to me in that I can't think of any dreadful performances right off hand at least up to his Zip days, but I also havent seen him in any MOTYC singles matches either. Complex guy to analyze as the consistency criteria should weigh heavily for him but I don't see him making the cut overall.

Sentimental favorite for me. LIked him the best of the Footloose tag with Kawada and they of course had some great matches with Furnas/Krofatt. However, he has really shined in a lot of the FMW stuff I have watched at being an extremely limited worker but being able to overcome that with storytelling and charisma in the ring. He potrays a sleazy heel top boss so well and looks like he is straight from the pages of a Batman comic book. I can see him obtaining one my last few spots on a top 100.
