Way too soon for me and I don't have him as the best wrestler of 2014 like some do. I do have him as one of the best wrestlers so far this year and another strong 2015 will help his case but to me the longevity isn't there unless something miraculous happens.

Smothers will require a tougher look. It could be a case where my favorite is clouding the judgement of the greatest. I think when put in a position to do serious stuff he was good. The match vs. the MX is of course a classic but their endless series of Freebirds while not exceptional, it also wasn't embarrassing which certainly was in play for the Birds in the 90's. His SMW stuff will require a closer look from me. He has been fun in hell in ECW and had some legit great matches amidst other feel good, crowd pleasing matches. I liked a good portion of his indy run in IWA-MS especially causing riots, wrestling barefoot, and having really good brawls with Bull Pain. I am really conflicted but leaning no right now. Either way, I will be examining him more.

Really good in Midsouth. One of my least favorite wrestlers ever afterwards. Not sniffing my top 100.

Benito’s weight at 235 was a Sapphire reaction from me as he has a good bit of pudge. They promote this tag as an Australian Rules tag which seems like a basic tag match structure we are familiar with now except each team mate has to be pinned. Davis is all about Benito marking out at everything he does. His impersonations here are atrocious and constantly annoying adding in dialogue to the match. Benito was a good bit of fun mixing in some comedy spots to pop the crowd by crawling through Fritzs’ legs. Good sequence by Benito escaping with a head scissors and then following up with a crisp hip toss. Rudy is tagged in and starts working the arm. Hans tries to pull Fritz to the corner but gets chastised by Davis on commentary. Rudy isn’t exactly doing a ton on this arm drag. Davis says that both feet must be on the floor like in billiards. Hans comes in and faces off against Rudy and the match losses a good bit of steam. Hans does have some good strikes and he takes Rudy down and rides him. Rudy does his best spot of the match not doing the cleanest of breaks and hitting a double stomp. He then follows it up with a nice flying mare and Hans takes a breather. Great moment as Hans gets spooked by Benito when he ends up in the wrong corner. Rudy keeps going back to that flying mare and Benito looks for approval from the crowd to kick Hans on the apron. He settles for a forearm and Rudy hiptosses him in twice. Benito finally tags back in after causing havoc on the apron. Fritz gives a weak backbreaker then picks Benito up. He then delivers a backbreaker to Hans’ knee to win the first fall. Hans and Fritz paste Rudy in their corner in a nice sequence. One big body press gives them the first fall. Fun finish. Second fall starts with Benito floating over and headlock. Hans turns it into a front facelock and they spill out to the floor. They spill to the floor again to the delight of the front row. Benito throws Fritz in. “Come on in Fritz, the waters fine.” Benito spills Hans over the top rope and Rudy goes for a spinning toe hold which Hans goes to the ropes for. Rudy and Benito cover Hans quickly. Fritz gets spilled over and the heels are showing all sorts of ass in this fall. Benito and Fritz do a no sell hip toss exchange and Benito hits a forearm smash and big splash to win the second fall. Third fall never gets going as it is bedlam with all four guys fighting and the referee throws it out. This wasn’t an awful finish as things did build that way from the first fall. This was my favorite match overall of the three I have seen. I want to see more of Benito.

I agree that Taue is spotty in NOAH but he still has some good longevity of great matches compared to some. The 9/30/90 tag and the 3/2006 Marifuji match are a long way apart from each other and those are two fantastic Taue performances. I would even argue he was still good in the 2009 tags. He may not have been able to go all the time in the oughts but when they called upon him, he seemed to deliver every time out. The other promotions thing is an interesting point and a valid one against Taue. I guess his only shot at prominence really was the New Japan vs. NOAH stuff in 2002. I do think Taue's placement in the Dome shows is odd and also hurts him to some extent. Like I explained in my post, the 1999 Dome Show is really Baba Memorial, Vader vs. Misawa and everything else but he was in a pretty high profile match. The other three domes, he was a non-factor.

I would check out as much as you can from him in WCW 1998. Great PPV matches with a variety opponents and the best of 7 series that clearly raised Booker T and had each match feel different. Benoit will be on my ballot, really cant see him dropping below the top half.

I think this is a spotty mess right now internationally with the current resources we have comprising of Dave spottyness and throwing out vague ratings like "at least ****" in Observers, Keller who was pretty much off the map, Lorefice, Bahari, and others with some spottiness and quite frankly weird tendencies. i do think the Yearbook project should help at least clarify the 90's somewhat as within the next few years, you will have a collection of people that have went through all of them and can provide opinions on things.

Also enjoyed this show a lot and it provided a good standalone vehicle to describe the buildup and magnitude of this match. -
I was delighted to take a look at Akira Taue's credentials over at Voices of Wrestling. http://www.voicesofwrestling.com/2014/09/15/akira-taues-hall-of-fame-case/

Tim, any idea when the best of the 2000's indy project is going to be rolled out? That is something I am really looking forward to and think it will compliment the discussion in here quite a bit.

I had seen this numerous times before and adored it a good bit but watching it again now, I think it was even raised a notch above that where I have it as a 7-8 All Japan match of the decade which is high praise. The opening matwork was terrific and really set the stage that this match was going to be different in some ways. Tim spoke about the strikes and Loss spoke on the selling and both were fantastic throughout. I really marked for the cross-armbreaker spot and it felt believable as a finish based on the groundwork provided. The simplicity of the finish feels definite without feeling overblown and this is a great performance by both Kobashi and Kawada. I know there is some hyped stuff to come but this is one of the all time great All Japan matches and while it is hyped, it deserves closer attention for all the right it does in the midst of some things in the promotion going towards the other side of things. This wasn't very exciting and the crowd reaction was extremely tepid. It seems weird that the Flock just wouldnt be at ringside to help out Raven since Kanyon has been doing sneak attacks.

I liked the way Ted appeared here as it showed the straight laced father looking on his rebellious son with disappointment. In some ways, you could have some sympathy for Jericho if he wasn't such a prick. Dean giving the belt up saying he can win it fairly at GAB was also good and again this should have been the blow off to the whole thing.

I didn't like they way they tried to artificially make this match more epic by inserting two commercial breaks into this. I will sound like a broke record but this was humming along nicely and again played off past spots with this time Booker kicking out of the German trio in succession. Hart runs down and hits Booker with a chair but Benoit is too much of a gentleman to take the win that way and he ends up getting himself DQ'd. Good way to set up the final match at the PPV in my opinion. (**1/2)

This wasnt bad for a raunchy insincere ECW segment with the payoff.

Seeing this thread again made me hate this segment even more.

I have still liked this DX skits pretty good and do think they are funny in spots. Lots of interesting characters are interacted with in NYC.

Vince looks sincere and slick with his lackies in a tux. Vince proclaims that tonight he will be the Humanitarian of the Year and the true genuine person.
