Koko Ware is all about Memphis. Koko in WCW in the mid 90's would have been a Jim Powers like jobber.

Okay. The evil monster who jobbed in three minutes at Mania is now the #1 contender and destroys Daniel Bryan. Midgets. Oberlong babyafce promos from a faction who didn't get over by doing overlong babyface promos (remember when Goldberg got to finally cut promos ?). RVD being pushed in 2014. More emphasis on that red hot Cena vs Bray Wyatt feud with more overdone "evil" stuff (yeah, he's clearly overdoing the whole chanting bit). Well. I was excited by the post WM show. And as always, WWE figured out how to kill my curiosity for their product in a matter of two weeks. Yawn.

Savage showing up at Survivor Series in the MSG would habe been awesome. Can you picture the feud he could work at this point with Micheals, Hart and Austin ? Well, we got DDP which was a starmaker feud, but still, Savage during the pre-Attitude era would have been so much fun. Bischoff is already a very good heel promo. Total sleazeball. It comes naturally to him, and for obvious reasons. DiBiase is not even here, being totally irrelevant now.

To be honest, that's what I thought when watching the trailer.

Puroresu vs Lucha Libre vs American Wrestling?
El-P replied to blackholesun's topic in Pro Wrestling
Same thing here. It's funny, when I dove into puroresu in late 98, and then when I stopped watching US wrestling one year later, I thought I had found what I would watch forever from now on. I was so deeply into the diversity of puro, from AJ to NJ to the garbage promotions to the many joshi feds to the shootstyle and ridiculous indies. And after a few years because of lack of time and personnal issues I went away from it. I only watched a few matches from the 00's at the time of the GOAT poll. And then for the past 4-5 years, I went back to strictly american wrestling, going through ECW, SMW and WCW (and I only have one year left to go through until I'm done). I really wouldn't know what to do with puro now, and any attempt I made at watching some just never worked very well. What Loss says about the globalization of the styles also seems very true, and it's pretty sad. -
And there goes the floodgate. At this point the angle turned into a clusterfuck with all B players getting involved, and the original idea was bastardized. Bagwell turning was probably the only one who really got something out of joigning the nWo, it succeeded in turning him into a solid undercard heel.

Oh man… Reeks of "Goldberg didn't follow the script. Enough meta-angles already. They won't be able to catch lightning in a bottle twice. You can't recreate artificially what happened organically onece for very specific reasons. Cesaro gets babyface reaction because he's a cool as fuck power wrestler who does the Giant Swing. Just build him up as a heel that people still want to cheer up to the point he finally turns face. Nothing complicated with the situation. "Recreating" a Daniel Bryan-like crowd support is just baffling. Let each guy get over on their own term.

Triple H just announced that the Ultimate Warrior passed away
El-P replied to flyonthewall2983's topic in Pro Wrestling
You could NOT care less. Could NOT. Somewhat makes it hard to take the rest of your statement seriously. This one drives me up a wall too. Hate that they're treated as interchangeable by so many people Well, I guess my mistake comes from the fact I've seen/heard a shitload of actual English-speaking people use it that way then. -
Rey Mysterio and Randy Savage worked a pretty cool promo segment on Thunder in 1999, which was followed up by…. nothing of course.

Corrected. -
Really good ending sequence. With Rey, Jarrett, Regal and Eddie along with DDP and Luger, you get a picture of "what could WCW have been" if they had choosed to push the young talents. Great babyface fire showed by Regal indeed. Neat detail in that DDP actually never attacked the nWo and vice versa. Luger having to carry the load after making the mistake of not trusting his own friend Sting was indeed a great storyline.

[1996-11-24-WCW-World War III] Hulk Hogan vs Roddy Piper Contract Signing
El-P replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
Gotta love Piper telling Vincent "I taught you how to fight !". Yeah, just a terrific angle. I agree Hogan is doing the best work of his life at this point. I never enjoyed Hulk much, but Hollywood at his peak and when he had a real issue to work with was just awesome. "Show'them the hip !" Piper is excellent here too, the way he reacts when Hogan shows the scar is exactly what it should have been. Great selling after the beating too. It's amazing that ten years after WM1, WCW was able to milk Piper vs Hogan and make it another money program, not by rehashing it but by making everything fresh and exciting again. If only they had been that smart with their up and coming talent...- 8 replies

[1996-11-24-WCW-World War III] Rey Misterio Jr vs Ultimo Dragon
El-P replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
The "squash" feel may come from the fact Ultimo Dragon just threw bombs after bombs to Rey. He really beat the shit out of him. However, Rey kicked out of everything Ultimo threw his way, getting major babyface heat and support for every kick out and comeback. That's not a prolongued squash. And when Rey got on offense, he got extremely close to beating Ultimo, with great nearfalls that were believable. Finally, Ultimo did counter Rey once too many and got the win, but although Ultimo looked like a terrific offense machine, Rey also delivered quite a bit of impressive stuff and was never cut off systematically like he would by Dean at times. Great match and a definite WCW cruiserweight classic. Loved both guys outfits too. (In comparison, the Malenko vs Psicosis match later on got exactly zero heat whatsoever, you could hear a pin drop. Of course, it was a technically competent but worked in a vaacum typical boring Malenko-on-control match, which showed that he wasn't over until he had an opponent the people cared about, and he wasn't able to make the people care on his own merits.)- 18 replies

Saw a decent Rough & Ready match with Harlem Heat of all people on Saturday Night 96.10.26. Enos did a few impressive power spots and Slater was… well, he was 1996 Slater.

Triple H just announced that the Ultimate Warrior passed away
El-P replied to flyonthewall2983's topic in Pro Wrestling
I honestly couldn't care less about what the WWE does with the Warrior image before or after his death. But the level of hypocrisy, crocodile tears and misplaced sensibility just makes me chuckle. Had he died just before they cut a deal with him, he would have been happy to get a mention on Raw and they probably would have pimped The Self-Destruction again. It's all business. -
Money angle. Bishoff is again excellent here, feeling totally uncomfortable. You can cut the tension with a knife and then the nWo shows up and the shit hits the fan. I like teh fact the nWo didn't beat up Piper yet, they just held him back. Uncle Eric immediately acts like a punk, throwing fists toward Piper from afar. It should be always remembered that Bischoff excelled in the "evil boss" role that would be such a stamp on those new hot years for wrestling more than one year before McMahon did it. And just in a snap, DiBiase becomes irrelevant and useless. The only thing that could have been better is I think Schiavone was sorely missed at the broadcast, Heenan & Tenay just weren't able to convey the drama of the situation to me. Sullivan said that it was actually Hall & Nash's idea to make Bischoff part of the nWo. "Make the boss part of the angle. Hum.. I dunno how you can lose with that one…"

[1996-11-18-WCW-Nitro] Hollywood Hogan and Eric Bischoff / DDP and the NWO
El-P replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
Great fake (in hindsight) intimidation segment with Hogan & Bischoff, who's doing a terrific job here too. The DDP & Outsiders bit is a very clever foreshadowing of the money angle at the end. It's amazing that at this point they paid so much attention to details like this, and then at one point they totally lost the plot. This episode of Nitro was just impressive with how they worked the nWo stuff.- 8 replies

Triple H just announced that the Ultimate Warrior passed away
El-P replied to flyonthewall2983's topic in Pro Wrestling
What a bunch of bullshit. How many kids lose their dad every minute everywhere in the world ? Yeah, since we all saw them at the HoF, we feel really bad for a minute or two. And yeah, the Warrior dying brings back memories from when some of us were a bunch of kids. But nostalgia goes a long way. Once the thoughts are rightfully sent to the family, it's time to be fair and point out the guy was a gigantic asshole who harmed and insulted a lot of people by his comments over the years, that he was a shitty worker who delivered a bunch of good matches and a vast majority of unwatchable hours of crap, and that the WWE guys are all shedding crocodile tears now because after years of burying the guy in the dirt (and making money out of it), they just had made a deal with him and were onto the process of making more money from nostalgic old geezers who now are feeling bad because the guy who use to run and shake the ropes and blow up died at 54 after a life of steroid abuse (despite the fact he himself showed no compassion for his peers who died from the same kind of chemical abuse over the years). (Ted DiBiase being a hypocrite leech is nothing new either.) -
[1996-11-18-WCW-Nitro] The Outsiders and Faces of Fear
El-P replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
Excellent segment. Nash & Hall do a great job hyping the match and putting the opposition over. Nash bullying Schiavone was indeed pretty neat as he referenced Tony's laugh the previous week and made it an active part of the segment. Schiavone acting totally pissed of at Larry and leaving the broadcast during the next segment was pretty terrific. Schiavone was still at his best then.- 7 replies

I fail to see how that makes him a legit badass. He may very well be, but...

All Steiner's big match are ridiculously overrated. The only one that deserves the universal love to me is the Nasties match in 90. Don't get me started on the infamous Dome Show match against Hase & Sasaki.
-
Fuck ! I want Schiavone with Corny instead !

Yep, Yoshida was definitely 99. Seems like an eternity ago now.
