I never understood why Lee was positionned as the female wrestling specialist in WCW. He had that cool deep voice though.
-
Schiavone was excellent during the early nWo days too. He had some terrific moments and really helped get the angle over.
-
To me, character-wise, it was really when he came back from injury (on TV) in late 96/early 97. He had been on and off since his comeback in 93, with a last peak of being super fun in 96 with Liz & Woman feuding with Savage. In 97, he wasn't the same guy anymore. Some point out to the Hogan feud in 94. I would disagree although at times yeah he was already in hyper-Ric mode then and not in a good way.

Mmkay… the children choir was cute. Not great. Not creepy. Not horrifying. It was cute. That's the problem with Bray Wyatt. He's cute. He doesn't strike fear in anyone's heart. He should turn babyface tomorrow, it would work infinitely better for me. Flair, well, it's been about 15 years since his days of being on live TV are over, really. Sad. And yeah, Trip was even sadder. The Wrestlemania great performance looks like a miracle from where we are now. Still curious about the product though.

Clearly teasing he's going to join the nWo because he can't fight against them… Swerve and huge pop incoming.

Giant really didn't fit in the nWo to begin with. The turn was needed.

Hogan gloating still hasn't gotten old, but still, this promo really didn't had any point. Hogan was the promo guy of the year, but this kind of promo isn't why.

[1996-12-29-WCW-Starrcade '96] Hulk Hogan vs Roddy Piper
El-P replied to Loss's topic in December 1996
Well, I still like this match a lot, all because of Hogan, really, as Roddy looked pretty awful at times. It should have been a one time only deal of course. Total feel-good moment and the first crack in the nWo armor. The booking was going into the right direction (in theory, with Luger being over like no one's business and a stronger and stronger undercard) and Starrcade was a great way to cap off a terrific 1996 for WCW.- 18 replies

Solid match with an excellent finish. The babyface heat Luger gets is insane at this point. This is what they could have accomplished if they had booked the whole feud better than they ended up doing.
-
Quite the good match too with a hot finishing stretch again, also Benoit vs Jarrett was better as a whole. Good angle at the end, building two babyface at once basically, the soon-to-turn DDP and the already over Eddie getting the US belt in the process. It's a testament to how over Eddie was as the Outsiders got a huge babyface reaction winning against the Faces of Fear, but Eddie still gets the most babyface support here. On a sidenote, Sullivan using himself to get Benoit over and putting the US belt on Eddie really puts in perspective the rampant paranoia of the early 00's, because if anyone pushed these guys from the start, it was Sullivan.

[1996-12-29-WCW-Starrcade '96] Jushin Liger vs Rey Misterio Jr
El-P replied to Loss's topic in December 1996
Underrated match. Liger beating the shit out of Rey was pretty great. It's not the old Liger and it takes place in the US so of course it's more deliberate, but it's still pretty damn good. The only drawback to me is that they don't get to work a long and hot run to the finish. Dusty was funny, but he and Heenan especially have no idea how to get this kind of match over.- 12 replies

[1996-12-29-WCW-Starrcade '96] Ultimo Dragon vs Dean Malenko
El-P replied to Loss's topic in December 1996
Excellent match thanks to the great end stretch, but Malenko is a tone deaf worker with absolutely no notion of what the crowd wants. Ultimo was awesome at this time, so much quickness and intensity, and so much great offense to bring to the table. Despite the cliché Iceman gimmick which basically was an excuse for a lack of charisma, Malenko was much better as a fiery babyface as showed here during the run to the finish, since he was a great mechanic and had a lot of cool spots under his belt.- 10 replies

Schiavone and the other announcers not picking on the fact the Amazing French Canadian were actually singing their national anthem in *french* and saying "they don't know the words !" each time around was embarrasing.

[1996-12-16-WCW-Nitro] Scott Hall & Kevin Nash vs Meng & Barbarian
El-P replied to Loss's topic in December 1996
Wallstreet already joined the week before. Chono joined earlier in the show. This is the official turn of Bubba & Norton, and yeah, the nWo is officially saturated with JTTS. It certainly didn't kill the nWo, but it killed the aura it had during the first 6 months. The Sting spots were cool though, with untrusting WCW members jumping on him, leading to Sting packing off without even touching an nWo guy.- 6 replies

The announcers looks stupid not recognizing the real Sting. And yeah, as cool as those were, they overstayed their welcome after a while. Well, this time, a nWo guy feels the wrath of Sting. The inverted DDT was a great idea for a finisher, it completed Sting new fresh image.

I never realized this was Arn's last match. Too damn bad about the neck injury, Arn still had a lot in the tank. Wild brawl indeed. Best counter ever to the tree of woe spot. Arn doing the job building heat for Sullivan. I loved this feud. Of course it's a little more complicated to enjoy now. Woman & Chris at the restaurant had Chris saying a few words in French. Creepy in retrospect.

Really good stuff. Great ? I don't see it. Regal's performance was great, yes, but Psych wasn't. Lot of sloppy executed moves on his part. To me the very heated crowd makes the match that much better than it is. I have no idea why this had so much heat either, as Psych really never was over in WCW (his match with Malenko at WWIII got crickets). This made for a super hot opener on TV. Sadly, Bischoff and DiBiase only talk about Piper and Hogan, which would be the usual ultra annoying element of Nitro during the nWo era : not promoting your hot undercard.

Couldn't be worse than Sandman's from 1995, really.

Agreed. Han was awesome, but he wasn't the only one.

On Saturday Night, 12/14/96, DDP uses a peculiar version of the Diamond Cutter which most likely inspired the 3-D. Then after the bell, he goes right in the front of the camera and says "I'm hardcore ! Thanks Bubba Ray !" Damn. I guess DDP was "flattered" that Bubba Ray stole his move in ECW.

Personnality/character is what sells. Not size. Now, the business model of the WWE has always sold size has an important matter. That's why they never understood how to promote guys like Rey on top. That's why they pushed a number of big guys who failed miserably too.

I have no idea on which podcast he said that stuff, but damn, I love Steve Austin :

Damn, the last spot should be brought back :

[1996-12-02-WCW-Nitro] Roddy Piper beats up Eric Bischoff
El-P replied to Loss's topic in December 1996
A little bit of Piper overexposure already ? Yeah, the nWo not daring to jump on Piper was exactly what the angle needed. Bischoff takes his first beating as a heel, and the slap from behind looked quite stiff. Good angle.- 7 replies
