Randy Orton is a black hole to me, and pretty much everything I hate about WWE's modern style, including look and pre-progammed maneurisms.

From my ECW watch a few years ago : Spike Dudley. Balls Mahoney and RVD aren't too far behind. From my current SMW & WCW watch : Jimmy Golden. BORING, DULL, SLEEP INDUCING, UNINTERESTING, ZZZZZZZZZ Add Yumiko Hotta too. Yeah, Bad News was a good promo and looked like shit in the ring. Like Stevie Ray level of shit.

Starrcade really didn't feel like a major show at all. Really, GAB and Halloween Havoc were the big time shows in 1994. That doesn't change the fact that having Brutus Beefcake in the main event was a huge slap to WCW fans and workers. A guy with no talent, who hasn't been relevant in... well was never relevant but at least over during his late 80's midcard WWF stint, with no promo ability, who wasn't over in the least with WCW crowd, put into a main event, whatever the show, was a complete joke on par with David Arquette, if not worse actually because at this point you already had non wrestlers work matches all over the place. A total travesty, a joke of a match, a joke of a booking, and an epic fail as it felt like a throw away Saturday Night match. Hogan also showed how much of an asshole he was as earlier on the show, "Hulkamaniac" brother Dave Sullivan was beaten down merciless by his brother after Jimmy Hart encouraged him to interfere into Kevin's match, and no one comes to defend him. Way to go Hogan. He did show up to defend Sting later on, but Sting is a star, so you know Hogan was full of shit in kayfabe too, only caring for the big names and not for the weak. teh announcing is also considerably suffering, as Heenan in particular is at point unbearable overselling shit like the Butcher and making jokes without caring for the in-ring product. Schiavone is not the same anymore as you can feel he's not enjoying himself a lot of the time, and has zero chemistry with the Brain. Anyway. I thought Hogan's arrival was gonna be bad, I didn't think it would get that bad that quick actually. The company took a huge nosedive during that year, despite an already pretty shitty 1993 overall. I wasn't that hot about the first 6 months of 1994 eithet, although it was way better than most of 93, but a few weeks after Hogan shows up the company jumps off a cliff in term of content. Sad to watch, even in retrospect. The final picture of Starrcade, with Hogan and Savage together really pointed the finger toward what Bischoff wanted for WCW : to be the WWF in 1988. Ultimately the company would regain an identity with Nitro and the whole undercard of cruiserweights, luchadors, japanese wresters, the likes of Raven and the nWo, but for now, WCW was washed out.

"He's ambitiously stupid" - Why Scott Keith's new book is scary bad
El-P replied to Bix's topic in Megathread archive
I mentionned in another thread that I would most probably never revisit WWE 00's, but if I make one exception to this, it might be to take a look at WWECW. I'm intrigued about several things that have been pimped over the years, Flair as "The American Onita" being one (and being a big Onita fan, I'm scratching my head at this very notion to be honest). -
That's true. Still, I always get a kick out of listening to Lance Storm explain what should and shouldn't be done, including talking about cutting promos.

Seriously ? Well, he's the best athlete in WWF history so that has to count for something.

[1994-12-27-WCW-Starrcade '94] Alex Wright vs Jean Paul Leveque
El-P replied to Loss's topic in December 1994
Youth movement in WCW on PPV. Nice. both showed potential, but the match went way too long (eh !). But the one thing that strikes me rewatching this, is that Levesque (who is announced from Saint-Pierre L'Eglise, in Normandie, I guess it's fairly exotic) in this gimmick looks exactly like... oh man, the high boots, the hairstyle, he's FUCKING FRANCIS LALANNE !!! Oh man I'll never be able to watch HHH the same way again !! I can picture him crying on a booking commitee because he doesn't want to do a job or something : "Hey you ! Rond-de-cuir bookers ! There are plenty young workers like me who can work and you want them to do jobs, while you can't work yourself !!" (I realize I'm entertaining only myself here, but what the hell, this totally stroke me watching this match. And made me laugh to no end too.) -
Yep, as good as I remembered it to be. They already had a good match on Saturday Night a few weeks prior. I have to say that it's not a one-night-wonder for Hacksaw, who did work hard in his first few months in WCW against both Vader and Austin, resulting in having better matches with these two as he probably had in his entire WWF stint. Vader is indeed having a great 1994.

Gawwwwwwwd ! Kill me already !

I'm not convinced at all.

Well, I'm not the one who said it was his finisher. But anyway, it's his big signature spot, so you get my drift.

[1994-12-17-WCW-Saturday Night] Blacktop Bully vignette
El-P replied to Loss's topic in December 1994
Kinda looks like something out of SMW actually. Darsow did have a number of goofy gimmicks. Nothing beats the Repo-Man, it's odd they didn't try to recreate it.- 4 replies

It's his finisher, hence his entire work is building to the point he'll use the fucking stupid 619. So I can't enjoy very much all other aspect of what he's putting together because I know in the end it's gonna be all about setting up that spot that I can't stand. Really annoys me. Oh, the other thing that annoys me about Rey in WWE is bouncing off the second rope. Makes him look like a midget. I realize the WWE rings are bigger than the WCW ones, but still, I always thought he looked like a lucha midget doing it, and it hurt the perception of him being a big star. He's like the fantastic kid of the block rather than the über masked star hero he should have been. Of course he got his first push to the top because Eddie had died. Oh, man I should stop here, I think my answer to the question asked in this thread is simply "Rey in the WWE" after all.

I enjoyed the Blacktop Bully segment. Fuller shines on these kind of vignettes, and the surveillance camera deal was pretty neat.

I think now is the time to drop the old fart line about "lost art" and such.
-
Pretty much. Which is why I can't stand WWE's Rey. Because everything revolves around that stupid spot.

The voice-over Bischoff and Heenan was so poorly executed. I didn't bother listening to Hogan's promo, I do have a life. Savage's comes out and cuts a rather heelish (and good) promo, to say the least. He comes off like a huge star, but the idea of him feuding with Hogan is yet another step toward the WWFization of the promotion. Meanwhile, Vince is pissed and depressed.

Yep, great post Dylan. I totally agree, and it's an awesome summary of why Terry Funk is also my favourite wrestler. And then you can talk about his hilarious promo skills too.

Okay. So I guess it's on its way. Savage finally shows up. Sting is not even Hogan's first bitch now. The Franchise of WCW must be so sad. No wonder he fall into Flair's arms again at the end of 1995, he needed some old-school WCW comfort. The one thing positive I can get from Hogan's reign of terror was John Tenta getting a push as a monster again. I always enjoyed Tenta's work, and thus far he doesn't disapoint at all. It's fun to see the contrast with Vader, as they really are the polar opposite in term of how they play the role (some may argue that Tenta could actually play the montain of a man part better, as Vader was always overbumping a tad too much in that respect, but this comes from his über workrate approach he got from Japan).
-
Nope. On which B-shows was that ? Sounds pretty good on paper. Although I must say I've been pretty disapointed with S&S, not that I excepted them to be great or anything, but The Patriot seems to be not nearly as good as I remembered him to be. Maybe he got better in 1997. To me Bagwell clearly carried the team. Their matches with Pretty Wonderful rarely goes above decent, and most have a bizarre finish with kinda fluke pins. On the other hand, Paul Roma is doing the best work of his career a this point. It took a while for him and Orndorff to really get into a groove, and they are more a fun team rather than a very good one, but I enjoy Roma more than I ever did at this point.

[1994-11-26-WCW-Saturday Night] Steve Austin vs Jim Duggan
El-P replied to Loss's topic in November 1994
One thing I'll say about Duggan, he worked way harder facing Austin and Vader than he did during his entire WWF career, resulting in having also much better matches. Maybe the fact he was actually featured in longer matches pushed him, but as much as I can't stand the character and the fact he got here by being Hogan's friend, he did show up to work, at least at the beginning against excellent opponents. Austin making fun of Duggan is pretty priceless.- 6 replies

Well, I'll take a break after completing 1994, I think I'll need one despite all the FF. But yeah, I feel like the most fun part of WCW in 1995 will be on the B and C shows. For instance, I just saw a pretty cool Dustin Rhodes vs Jean Paul Levesque from Pro, called by Gordon Solie, Dusty & Zbyszko. Solie calling a HHH match is pretty surreal. Funny to think it would be a WrestleMania match a few years later. Levesque really showed potential, but he also butchered a flying knee like I've rarely seen. Good little match though for someone who was still green (and he already was doing the Pedigree in squashes too).
-
Sting must be thinking "Awww crap, I was the franchise and the face of WCW, now I'm barely Randy Savage in his best Hogan's bitch role, wearing stupid red and yellow". Wait, no he was probably thinking "Yeh, I have a new brother in paint because we lifted weights and went surfing together !" The match itself is not too bad since Dave Sullivan is ejected early and Tenta carries the whole thing on his back (Sullivan works decently hard too). It's amazing how useless and inept Beefcake was, as the match totally dies each time he enters the ring. It's also amazing to consider they still went with him main eventing Starrcade when it was obvious nobody gave a shit about him. Why not go with Hogan vs Avalanche instead ? Tenta could work and knew out to heat heat. Anyway... Shitty undecipherable finish and it's funny how Stars & Stripes are just thrown to the lions one hour after they regain the World Tag Team Titles. Way to make them look like jobbers. Beefcake uses the lethal sleeper on Hogan and Heenan says it's dangerous as it could lead to brain damage for Hogan. Well, that would give us two Dave Sullivan then. Not too bad of a match thanks to Tenta, horrible angle. Beefcake is one of the most useless worker ever.

[1994-11-16-WCW-Clash of the Champions XXIX] Vader vs Dustin Rhodes
El-P replied to Loss's topic in November 1994
Vader and Dustin proudly carry the flag of old-school WCW with stiff work, hate-filled brawling, shit kicking and a damn super match that look nearly out of place in the Hogan running wild context. Thankfully Duggan shows up at the end to remind us where exactly we are now (although it will lead to Duggan's best match since Mid-South so I can't complain too much). Each time I see Dustin and Vader work together,a nd they always had excellent match at this point, I think about the weirdo Roya Rumble 1998 matcg they had together, during the AFKAG phase.- 10 replies
