Anyone thear want to get all pissy at the "Brett" spelling ? (oh, let's not get into wrestlers/actors analogy, it could get real ugly real quick )
-
The New Southern Boys is yet another proof that you just don't do "New" anything in tag team wrestling. It never works. Scott Armstrong is the lesser of the four brothers.

[1995-02-18-SMW-TV] The Gangstas, Bob Armstrong and Jim Cornette

Really ? I still must be a complete mark then, because I don't see it coming yet ! (in a way I find that comforting, I'm not a complete cynical asshole)- 4 replies

DWB is another one who comes off excellent when he's calm. I love those outdoor promos, and DWB looks all kinda cool with his cowboy outfit and horse. Pale rider.

What is great about Buddy Landell is that he really comes off as a total mythomaniac. You know he ain't got no limo full of women in the back. He's a pretend Nature Boy and that's even more funny. God, DWG has really taken it rough from bith Lawler and Landell in this feud, I wonder why they didn't brought her back to slap them around a bit. Good, fun stuff.

Does that mean I can say it too ? Anyway, typical fun promo from Candido, stumbling into a Loser Leaves Town match because of his big mouth.

Most of his good matches in WCW add to his legend. Talking about 1998 since that's what I already watched in it's (near) entirety, the Savage match on PPV is very good, and considering both were past their prime and Savage had a shitty knee it was really as good as it could have been. Then Bret had two very good match with Luger on Nitro and at least one very good match with DDP too. I realize I'm not talking about "great" matches, but having very good matches post-prime is a positive to me, especially when you get that from guys like Luger at this point of his career. And he wasn't working with a lot of guys who were having great matches either. Savage vs DDP had better match together than against Bret, but to me Savage is better than Bret, plus at this point Savage was not as injured as he was in early 98. Add to that they were two guys who pre-planned everything together so it seems obvious they would work well together. Anyway, Bret had a quite good 1998 in the ring when you think about it, including a very good Flair match (which, considering Flair's level of work at this point plus the fact they really never clicked that well, is again a positive to me).
-
I've grown up on Bret. i loved the guy. Still do like him a lot. But Flair in the 80's squashes Bret's body of work. Bret didn't had the opportunity to work in a favorable environment, but in a way he beneficiated from it (like Shawn did) because his best matche stand out that much more than Flair's. I would have loved to see Bret work in WCW in the early 90's and see how he would have compared to Arn, Windham, Eaton and such in the same setting. Then there are those "solid but disapointing" performances. I agree with Dan when he says A Flair TV match actually was more engaging and had more of a narrative than a short Bret TV match, and to me it also comes down to Flair's character, who was that much stronger (at least compared to babyface Bret). For instance Bret had matches on TV against Pritchard and Jimmy Del Ray in 1994/5 and they should/Could have been much more fun than they were considering the talent of his opponents. They were just solid but by-the-number wrestling match. I would guess Flair working any of these two, even in a short TV match would have gone the extra mile to make it look more special (as he was doing against pretty much anybody that was a good worker at one time). Then I can take into consideration the character, the promo ability and the presentation, and Flair wins easily too. Really, I like Bret a lot and think he was a great worker, but Flair has been so great for so long in so many territories, including after his prime (and really I was suprised how much I enjoyed the Vader match from Starrcade 93 and the Hogan match from GAB 94), that it's a no-brainer for me, has been for quite a long time now.

I don't see how any of his pile of shit can be defended in any level. This is not entertaining, this is the lowest low for Hogan and WCW until that point. Hogan proceed to take a huge crap on Vader, Flair and even Arn Anderson in the post-match, which is the shitty icing on the rotten cake. Everything is an abortion here, the match, Hogan's work, Renegade, Jimmy Hart showing up, the masked men, the amazingly dumb finish. Seriously up there with the worst of the worst Russo has ever done. Fuck you Hogan.

I think so too but I also think I am mixing it up with their match in Kuwait. You may be right. Kuwait it was.

I enjoy Flair having a mental breakdown. The match itself is *really* good. John Tenta has delivered big time since his arrival in WCW, and this is much better than his already good matches with Sting, which shows again Savage still had gas in the tank.

Really cool feature (although odd because devoid of any context) and strong promo from Arn. Looks like a vignette to introduce a new character actually.

[1995-03-19-WCW-Uncensored] Dustin Rhodes vs Blacktop Bully (King of the Road)
El-P replied to Loss's topic in March 1995
This is completely idiotic and not fun the slightest. I wonder if Dustin didn't get fired on purpose, his career was so dead at this point. He went from wrestling in the main event of the first Clash of 1994 to spending the next 14 months in the undercard against Jimmy Golden and now Barry Darsow (and not getting one big match against Arn or Terry Funk which would have been really cool). With the exception of the great Wargames match, to me this entire Studd Stable feud really killed my interest in Dustin and really damaged his status. Thankfully it's over. And yeah, this gimmick was so stupid on every level I'm surprised Russo didn't used it again. The Battle Royal spots was very dangerous, and this must have cost quite a bit of miney (damn, a freaking helicopter !). This has to be up there with the Junkyard Battle Royal.- 8 replies

Ok, thanks. I'll never understand the relationship between Hogan and Savage at this point. There was some hostility dating back from his divorce with Liz which he partially blamed on Hogan and Linda, et Savage seemed to align with Hogan no matter what in WCW, and ended up playing the role of his bitch like he always has before. Why wouldn't Savage support a guy like Flair who was just much closer to himself in term of work ethic ? Savage vs Flair was the best thing Savage did in WCW next to his program with DDP. It's just bizarre to me why Savage would follow Hogan's lead, he was a big enough star on his own. Insecurity maybe.

I heard about this before. Yes, this sucks. But hey, if I had to bother with the political opinions or social behavior of pro-wrestlers and affiliated, I just wouldn't watch pro-wrestling at all.

Does anyone know exactly when Sullivan became the booker in 1995 ?
-
At first I didn't enjoy Caudle much for the reasons Jerry mentionned, especially paired with Ross. The two didn't compliment each other. Then I watched SMW, where Caudle worked with Ducth Mantell for two years. And pretty quickly, this duo developped a dynamic that I would put against anyone, they were excellent together, Caudle as the no nonsense guy and Dutch as the fantastic heel color man. I wouldn't say Caudle was Lance Russel in SMW, has clearly he wasn't (and really, no one is), but he really clicked with Mantell and he was really fucking good during that period playing the straight guy balancing Mantell's hilarious insanity with a good sense of humour himself and the exact right amount of outrage at the heel's actions and not to much blatant fanboyism for the babyface. Watch Caudle in SMW, at first I thought I would not enjoy him based on my WCW experience, but I quickly turned the corner.

Very good angle. Once again, Flair deserves some credit to get some heat on that feud, which is something Hogan just wasn't able or willing to do. Bobby Heenan jumping out to calm Flair down was a nice touch. And they killed Dave Sullivan, which is as fun as Waylon Mercy killing the clown. Flair is having a mental breakdown. I like this. Flair promo at the end of the show was pretty intense too.

[1995-03-18-WCW-Saturday Night] Steven Regal vs Bobby Eaton
El-P replied to Loss's topic in March 1995
Eaton's flurry of offense is great, and so thinks Regal who is amazed by it. Grrrrrreat reaction by Regal on the mic. The most fun stuff on WCW TV.- 4 replies

[1995-03-11-WCW-Saturday Night] Steven Regal and Bobby Eaton
El-P replied to Loss's topic in March 1995
Finally something fun on WCW TV. I'm glad they gave this role to Eaton, who was doing exactly nothing for the last two years except makeshift tag team with Benoit (which would have been great if Benoit had stayed) and makeshift tag team with Keirn (which was awful and the worst thing Eaton was ever part of). Regal is gold here.- 7 replies

The beginning of 1995 was pretty good. I wish Lawler would have been seen on TV more than just cutting a few promos on pre-tape. Buddy Landell was more than a welcome addition on the heel side, tremendous worker and promo man. His short match with DWB on TV was really good for what it was. I enjoy the whole Cornette vs Gangstas feud quite a bit, with an awesome backstage brawl that goes outside the building and what seems to be a pretty good match with the Bodies on 01/28. The promos were akward though, with too much race baiting. The evolution of Cornette turning into a tweener and aligning himself with the Rock'nRoll and Bob Armstrong just because of the circumstances was cool and really smoothly done, although it does give the impression that it's everybody against the black guys... There's something that deeply doesn't work about that whole Gangstas stuff, but it's enjoyable nonetheless. On the flip side, I enjoyed Candido vs Boo at first when Cactus was involved, but now that it turned into cat squashing and dog food stip, I don't care anymore. They should have used the fact Candido was the NWA champion more instead of setling him in a "comedic" feud with Boo. Eddie Gilbert showing up is a nice surprise, although I'm definitly not a big fan of his in-ring work. Of course it's basically a way to get Unabomb into the mix, and thus far it's been ugly. Veteran Kane is boring and not-good enough, green Kane is just terrible. I know that soon Al Snow will take Gilbert's place, I'm curious to see his work here.

Jerry is really funny making fun of southern hicks. Yeah, this is WWF Lawler, but he was still excellent at this time even in the WWF setting so it's no big deal. The king of insults.
