Lots of awesomeness here. First of all, Buddy Landell's debut establishes him as a main player, and he cuts a mean, serious promo, including shots at Hogan and Flair. ECW ! ECW ! Wait. Hell, I would have loved to see Landell in ECW too. And in WCW as nWo Nature Boy. Anyway, I'm just having fantasies here. Landell is in SMW and he's already at the level of the best promos of the year. Then the segment with Ross running down Corny's evil deads. Ross is perfect here, as is Cornette's running on the stage outraged. I feel like Morton kinda comes off a bit naive as it's not like the Heavenly Bodies haven't slapped his father around a few months ago, and it's like they are desperate with the Gangstas to the point they kinda forgot everything Cornette did to them. Having Cornette remind what they did to him to was a smart way to reequilibrate the balance. Two great segments, as SMW has gotten on the right path again during the fall. Things are exciting again.

Yeah, what the hell happened ? It's not like he doesn't have a rich history with Candido and Fytch. I find that one puzzling. Cactus quoting the Christams Song was really funny. He's on fire. The match is okay. Tammy is smoking. There was no cat in that bag.

I know people like this. It's fucking infuriating and you do want to kill them at some points. Well, figuratively. The whole point about Brody not delivering at all in the ring what he projected as a character with his look and intros, added to the fact he was super over but maybe not that great of a draw after all, and also an unprofesionnal prick, reminds me of someone else. Sid.

Good TV matches I've been severely lacking in SMW this year, and this is one of them. Candido is clearly the best worker in the promotion since he showed up, and he shines again here. Nice to have some real action with a modern feeling to the work. I'm digging this whole feud quite a bit.

Cornette offering his services to teh Rock'n Roll is another awesome promo from Corny, and it makes a whole lot of sense to the point I didn't even consider it might be a plot until JR talked about it later during the Gangstas interview. Cornette was great at making this kind of angle that made sense in the grand scheme of things, with logical explanations and motivations. This is really the strongest point of his booking. Cactus was on fire with his promos after leaving WCW.

[1994-11-26-SMW-TV] The Gangstas vs Brian Lee & Lance Storm
El-P replied to Loss's topic in November 1994
Decent for a Gangsta match, they actually look better here than they did at points against the Rock'n Roll, but I guess that's a case of improving a bit because it's not like they work with any kind of talented opposition. I agree Ross hsa been very good since he showed up in SMW. Sounds like he had fun doing it.- 7 replies

Great promos from Cornette and New Jack. Nice to see that heels just gang together because they're heels, and that the Gangstas' character just aren't suppose dto ally with white-ass Corny. That was the strong point of Cornette's booking, understanding his characters' motivations. Anothere excellent promo from Cactus, with yet another sexual innuendo. I'm totally into the Boo angle, and it's kinda sad to see what happened with Balls in ECW, with the self-destruction and ridiculous chair shots, the guy had more talent than this. (That cat just doesn't care about anything, they sure found a placid one.)

Sometime good announcing can save a boring match. Jim Ross just did it with a very nondescript DWB vs Bruiser Bedlam strap match, dropping references left and right, about the Bruiser, about old-school Ron Wright. The two that got me by surprise are a Rey Mysterio Jr. reference (in 1994 ? Really ? Damn !) and a pretty great "My boy !", Barnett style, dropped after a very deliberate "James E. Cornette" (the James E. comes from Barnett's name). And no college sport references at all. I'm glad.

These two (hell, even three) are excellent on the mic, but really this is rather lame to have Scott as the Commissionner. Letdown, and really shows how biased and dishonest Amrstrong is (not that Cornette doesn't deserve it but that's beside the point). Cornette's booking of this feud is tired.

Around 1988/89 ? I don't see it. Vince didn't brought Brody to work with Hogan before, and Brody was hooked up with All Japan at the time, I doubt he would have got more money from Vince to come as one half of tag team with a green guy from AWA. What would a Brody/Nord team do in the WWF when Vince already had that team with the makeup and SM outfit whose name eludes me at the time ?....
-
I agree with what Jerry said. His death, the timing and circumstances of his death probably played a major part in why he's been remembered the way he is. Those people don't rewatch old matches. To this day you can still hear people throwing around the story that "Brody beat the shit out of Luger who ran from the cage, scared as hell" despite the video evidence that none of this happened. Anyone can watch a large batch pf Brody matches today and see how poor Brody's work actually was. Good points have been made here, about his death and how it played a role, about his look and about the fact Abby was much more fun and a much better worker. Brody was all about his post-mortem myth, lots of blood and waving a chain while Led Zeppelin was blasting into the speakers. (John Nord was the best Bruiser Brody ever)
-
All of this is all well and good, and yeah, I love on-location promos too, but it is just outshined by the final sentence of Cactus. I can't believe he actually said what he said (not talking about that great KC & Sunshine Band quote either)! (and Tammy's pussycat does look adorable)

Pretty good pull apart brawl. Hey, Lance Storm is here and he sucks at breaking up brawls too.

So, we get a great Abbby video with War Machine, which in retrospect always looks funny when Taz isn't around. We get a great promo from Ron Wright and a great promo from Cornette, who seems refreshed a bit after months of boring union stuff. Why is Bruiser Bedlam still on my TV though ? We get a fun angle with Cactus Jack trying to lure Boo Bradley away from his abusing "friends", and Tammy in a ridiculously hot dress. The Cactus promo after the brawl is excellent too and reminds everyone that Cac is a dangerous psycho. Yeah, Lance Storm looks boring even breaking up a fight. Brian Lee has got the ECW Brian Lee look at this point, after his post Underfaker comeback. I had no idea he showed up again in SMW, but he's not sold as anything real special now, which is a bit odd considering he's been one of the three biggest names for the first two years and a half.

I have no idea if there is footage around, but Robert Duranton was a pretty big wrestling star in the 60's. Here he is in the infamous shower scene from "Le Corniaud" (one of the most popular French comedy ever) with all-time great comedian Louis de Funes : (As you would probably guess, he was a heel, and had a male valet with him named Firmin.)
-
I would love a good Cornette vs DWB feud, but you have to plug some serious worker with him instead of the worthless, heatless, talentless Johnny K-9. Cornette is gonna have matches with Ron Wright now ? I don't want to sound mean, but this is seriously looking like a retirement home promotion now, after all those Bob Armstrong matches...

[1994-10-22-SMW-TV] Rock & Roll Express and The Gangstas

Morton's great promo is almost enough to make me care about that feud. Almost. Gibson is a zombi.- 7 replies

I'm bored to death by Cornette vs Bob at this point. No matter how good of a promo they are, this feud has jumped the shark months ago, and we're still taking about Bob leaving for ever and never be Commisionner, and we're still talking about stipulations and kissing feet. Nope. Kill this already, this is as fresh as a dead fish. Plus we never get any actula good wrestling out of it. The Wargames match was the perfect ending to this feud. Pretty cool to see Cactus in SMW.

[1994-09-17-SMW-TV] Rock & Roll Express vs The Gangstas
El-P replied to Loss's topic in September 1994
With the bizarre ring with no skirt, the outdoor setting with no crowd on the floor, this looks like some Puerto Rico match. At this point the Rock'n Roll do look older and dated, I have to admit. Gibson barely does anything and Morton is an auto-pilot. It's enough to have a semi-decent match with the Gangstas, but the restart/immediate finish I always hated. The best thing about this match is to watch the two black kids in the front row, in the middle of an ocean of white rednecks, chearing for the Gangstas. Fight the power and bring the noise kids ! (Armstrong assuming the role of commisionner again despite not actually being the commissionner is annoying)- 8 replies

Thus far they are quite boring on control. Not bad, but rather really green. And no intensity, which really negates the gimmick. And they had way more tools in ECW. Actual tools I mean.
-
September of 1994 just isn't very good at all. I almost wrote "goof", and that's because the goofy stuff with Candido, Tammy & Boo Bradley is the only thing I enjoy at this point (and that's despite basically feuding with Lance Storm...). The Gangstas are all about New Jack cutting racist promos, because in the ring they just don't deliver shit. And I'm tired of Ricky Morton getting beat up at this point. The other thing I'm really, and I mean really getting tired of is Cornette vs Bob Armstrong. That was fun for a while, but at this point this is FF material for me, it has overstayed its welcome to a ridiculous degree. Plus the main-event scene is cluttered with Killer Kyle (seriously ?) and Bruiser Bedlam, who sucks even worse. A huge waste of DWB and Smothers. Yep, the promotion seems really tired at this point.

Morton cuts a good promo, but this feud just isn't working for me.
