tomk
Think you could put your comments in bold so they stand out a bit more? Also, why was Hogan/Bossman so big compared to other feuds for those two? Especially Bossman, who was never really a draw in any other context. The feud never struck me as especially compelling. I want to say Bossman did good numbers opposite Rock in 2000. Everyone was doing decent numbers opposite Rock in 2000. Still you would have thought that Bossman would have done significantly worse numbers than Rock's more contemporary opponents. I want to say that he didn't. Loss
I don't recall Rock and Boss Man doing a program in 2000. If they did, it wasn't on PPV, so it's hard to call any house show numbers that were stronger than usual anything but a coincidence. In 1998, he was clearly put in a position to draw, with his match against Austin being one of the selling points of the Survivor Series pay-per-view. If Boss Man did the same numbers against Rock as others, I guess that just means that it didn't matter what they did at that point on house shows, because the company was hot and people were just coming to see The Show. I liked Boss Man for a long time, but I seem to remember him getting a negative type of heat when he came back to the WWF where people just thought he was embarrassing and wanted him to go away, fair and accurate or unfair and inaccurate. Cox
Didn't Austin have another program with Bossman in 2001? I want to say it was a TV program, Austin vs. Bossman/Booker T. And of course, there was the Bossman/Big Show program which actually headlined a PPV once.

Matt D
It's interesting to see Dave sour on Hogan in 84. For the first few months of the reign he'll be sure to note that Hogan's matches, while short, had the best "action" on the WWF cards. I think it was the Studd feud that did it. By the yearbook in January, when summing up, he's ... well.. "For the most part, Hogan's title reign has been a disappointment. He drew tremendously well for the first few months as a champion in the Northeast. In other parts of the country, his drawing power wasn't that noticable from the beginning. Things got worse as the year progressed as his run was ragged by his travel schedule and began to talk like he wanted out. His matches were the subject of the most criticism. Closely scrutinized as champion, it became evident he was severely lacking in the two areas most World champs are noted for, stamina and wrestling ability. Every match looked like a repeat performance. Hogan would get kicked around, bleed, then comes the infamous leg drop out of nowhere and it's over, usually in less than 10:00." He then restates that Hogan's the most popular wrestler in the world and talks about how that impacts his ego. Also interesting, he says that, in general, houses were higher all around the country in 83 than in 84.
Loss
1983 set the table for the boom. Most territories did at least one show that did huge business, usually more than one. Super Sunday, Starrcade, Final Conflict, Lawler/Dundee, etc.
Cox
I think Meltzer gave a lot of the WWF guys in the 80's more shit than they probably deserved for poor performances. Yeah, a lot of guys may not have been at the same level they were before going to the WWF, but I mean...the travel was unlike anything ever seen before or since. Can you blame the wrestlers when they were being run ragged by crazy 2-3 week runs without a break, going from airport to airport all over the country? I'd say mid to late 80's WWF had the most unpleasant working conditions ever seen in wrestling, and think of the ground THAT covers.
Loss
I don't want to dismiss that point entirely by any means, but I would be interested in doing a breakdown comparing the travel schedule of Ric Flair in 1985 and Hulk Hogan in 1985. I think we'd find that Flair worked a heavier schedule with more trips abroad, and maybe covering just as wide an area of the country. It would also be interesting to compare guys like Savage and Steamboat to guys like Arn and Tully during 1986 to see what type of schedule differences there were. Since Savage, Steamboat, Jake, etc. were the type that headlined most of the house shows, it would be an interesting comparison.
Victator
I think the bigger point is of the house show stuff on video most of the WWF roster was at worst decent.
Sean Liska
I don't know if I would make that leap. I've watched a lot of WWF house show stuff from the 80's, and I will say that a lot of the main events are better than they are given credit for. Hogan matches in particular are pretty solid. Piper knew how to put on a fun show from 84-86, Savage was great, etc. But the undercards are still some of the worst things I've ever seen. Matt D
People wildly underestimate Gorilla Monsoon's ability to make them moderately enjoyable.
Victator
A few of the matches are bad but the good makes up for it. I can gurrantee if Crockett's arena show were taped they would have just as many outright bad matches.
Sean Liska
That did not seem to be the popular opinion at the time amongst people that were attending WWF house shows and shows from other groups, according to what I've read from 80's newsletters. The Crockett house show handheld footage available looks a lot better similar WWE material from the time. WWE was running three crews, so you never had any depth, and they were handling an insane travel schedule that left everyone completely wiped out. Definitely agreed that Gorilla made house shows more enjoyable, though. He's the only reason I can sit through most of the 80s footage. jdw
On Loss' point about travel schedule in 1985: * Flair would have worked more * Flair may have traveled further * Hogan likely covered more of the country, consistently Flair and Crockett may have done a show in Los Angeles. Hogan worked in CA much more often. Flair may have worked the AWA big show at Comiskey. Hogan was working in "AWA Territory" much more. I think in the end there would be clear Flair advantages (number of matches we could identify), but there would be clear Hogan ones (worked in more major cities, and more often in them, and was a bigger draw). Does it wash out? Don't really think so. It's akin to a hard working rock band doing 200 shows in clubs vs U2 doing a stadium tour. Less dates, bit 40K+ a night. That's a little extreme in the comp since Flair wasn't working clubs and Hogan wasn't doing stadiums. But I don't think the analogy is that far off. People wanted to find examples of Hogan and Vince's "failure" back then. The reality is that they were far more successful than failing. I know Crockett had their fair share of bad house shows. Dave goes on about it quite a bit, always talking about how the double shot days would wear guys out and result in subpar shows. But they also had some terrific house shows. The WWF had plenty of guys on their roster who could go. Do you attribute them having worse shows to the schedule or the style? Or both? It's not an issue of time allowed, as Steamboat had at least as much time given to have matches with guys like Savage that until 1987 didn't really hit the same level as the match at Starrcade '84 with Tully Blanchard, for example. Is the schedule the reason guys like this weren't as good in the WWF?
artDDP
Is the schedule the reason guys like this weren't as good in the WWF? My knowledge of the inner workings of the WWF from this period is very limited so I'll ask: Had the WWF implemented their policy of most wrestlers working a certain limited style to make bigger moves more dramatic and not to get more heat than the main event...or something like that? Matt D
Is the schedule the reason guys like this weren't as good in the WWF? It was definitely discussed at the time. In the Jan 85 WON, when mentioning how crummy Hogan was in the ring Mr. Mike immediately followed with "It's not all his fault. Consider his schedule. It would make Ric Flair wince." Loss
Also in Hogan's defense, he had more than wrestling on his schedule. He also had public appearances and such. I'm not sure how many he was doing at this point, but it's fair to factor that in to the discussion, whether he was wrestling or not. I also think the wrestling quality was a selling point for Crockett, so them having a bad show in a market was more likely to affect future business in that market than the WWF, which even then wasn't using the match quality as a selling point. I don't know that the marketing of their product in 1985-1986 was as important as it would become later, but the WWF was also far more organized in terms of announcing the full cards in advance, making less last-minute changes, doing better local promotion, etc. than Crockett was. You can say that in the end Vince's philosophy won out, which is a point I'll halfway begrudgingly accept, but I think more than that, his preparation and organization won out. Whether it meant a better show or not, you were far more likely to get what was advertised and leave the building happy when you attended an 80s WWF house show than when you attended a JCP show.
