Loss Posted July 10, 2011 Author Report Posted July 10, 2011 Not much to say, but it's funny that the WWF was doing so many dark gimmicks at the same time, between this and the Undertaker. Quote
goodhelmet Posted July 10, 2011 Report Posted July 10, 2011 The sad thing is that if they could have found a Papa Shango that could work (Butch Reed? Maybe even Ron Simmons?) and Taker was able to put on his post 1996 working boots, this could have been a feud of the decade on the two gimmicks colliding. Of course, it doesn't matter because it was the Godfather in the gimmick. Quote
Tim Evans Posted July 13, 2011 Report Posted July 13, 2011 I don't even think Reed could make the Warrior feud work. I liked Shango's feud vs Lawler though. Quote
shoe Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 These are the types of things that make you embarassed to be a fan of wrestling. Still Shango comes across as a pretty sinister character. Quote
MikeCampbell Posted September 3, 2012 Report Posted September 3, 2012 More goofy stuff. I'm assuming that Vince or Patterson had recently watched Live and Let Die and decided that they needed a Baron Samedi character. Quote
WingedEagle Posted February 13, 2013 Report Posted February 13, 2013 Man it would've been something to see Butch Reed try and make this work. This felt like the trailer for a really, really bad Tarantino movie. Quote
PeteF3 Posted July 6, 2013 Report Posted July 6, 2013 Shango probably deserved the Most Embarrassing Wrestler Observer award on principle, and I know he was sort of the final straw for a lot of longtime fans. And I know Charles Wright may have never had a good match in his entire career. But dammit, I marked out when jobbers got set on fire and ooze started coming out of people's bodies. Quote
garretta Posted December 15, 2015 Report Posted December 15, 2015 How anyone could call this even remotely sinister compared to Taker and past wildmen like Kamala is beyond me. Everything about this screamed "CARTOON!" Maybe it's just the way Wright played it, because they don't get any more cartoonish than Taker on paper, and look what Calloway did with him. I don't recall ever seeing Shango wrestle. From what I've heard here and in other places, maybe that's a good thing. Quote
dawho5 Posted March 19, 2018 Report Posted March 19, 2018 Hey, now we got a voodoo guy! And another racist gimmick to give black wrestlers all at the same time, yay? Quote
