Holy Grails

It was more than a pet peeve in Watts' case. He was genuinely worried JYD jumping to the WWF without notice would put him out of business. As it turns out, his business became stronger than ever due in no small part to a talent exchange with Memphis that brought in acts like the Rock & Roll Express who appealed to the young female audience.

I am working my way through a 1984 Mid-South watch but also looping in Houston matches and episodes of Power Pro from the era, and man, you think the anti-"New York" sentiment was wild on the main Mid-South TV, it gets taken to astronomically comical levels on Power Pro, where Watts is dubbing new commentary over year-old Houston footage of guys that have gone to WWF losing to current Mid-South stars and trying to pass it off as current for the broadcast week.

One such 1983 Houston match re-purposed for broadcast in Fall 1984 was Butch Reed vs The Iron Sheik. Oh, Butch Reed is a heel in Mid-South 1984? Well, no problem, we'll just dub new commentary about how Butch Reed is normally not a favorite of the fans, but was inspired by the patriotism of the 1984 Summer Olympics and the chance to defeat a former World Wrestling Federation Heavyweight Champion!

Which still somehow wasn't as ridiculous as airing a 1983 match between Ted DiBiase and Tito Santana, and implying on the newly dubbed 1984 commentary that while Tito is currently that WWF Intercontinental Champion, this is a non-title match because "perhaps Tito wasn't confident in his abilities against the stars of Mid-South since taking on weaker competition in New York".

Oh and that episode of Power Pro ended with a teaser from Jim Ross where he talked about how the WWF TV announcers claim that Kamala has never been slammed, but next week we are going to show footage of all of the Mid-South stars that have slammed Kamala.

The current wave of WWE vs AEW sniping is fucking child's play.

Mocho Cota vs Ultimo Dragon (11/19/93)

That Cota/Dragon title match from 93 was on one of the lucha comps that Paul Herzog put together in the 90's, so that seems like something that is attainable as well.

Please don't get your hopes up but...

George Hackenschmidt footage has always been one of my "holy grails" and we're on the verge of perhaps finally being able to see some footage of him. The Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum, who are also in possession of a Hackenschmidt autobiography which was unpublished until a couple of years ago, worked together with a New Zealand archive, where the film had been stored, and managed to restore and digitize the George Hackenschmidt vs. Joe Rogers match from 1908 in London. It's 17 minutes of footage in total, including the introductions, the match and some posing by Hackenschmidt. It's a silent film. The footage is not available online, but the museum held a screening of it recently. According to someone who saw it, there was about 15 minutes of footage of Hack wrestling. Based on the match reports from 1908, the Hack/Rogers match went 14:20 minutes in total so that means they must have the whole match on film. Despite wrestling there for several years, Hack didn't have many high-profile matches in the UK and while the Rogers one probably doesn't crack the top 5 in terms of significance, it definitely makes the top 10 so it's not just some random match.

A frame from the film:

So yeah, it's pretty incredible to see a complete Hackenschmidt match from 116 years ago randomly pop up. The footage is not available online and I have no idea if the museum has plans to make it available at some point, but just knowing the footage exists takes us one step closer to possibly being able to see it.

Someone on another forum pointed out because it was an hour it probably got its own tape, which is why they can’t find it yet.

If it's a photographer's personal 8mm film collection that means no sound right?

It seems they fixed that by recording a synth wave soundtrack. Could be cool because the guy is a musician.

The George Hackenschmidt vs. Joe Rogers footage that I mentioned earlier has finally been released. It's available here:

https://www.ngataonga.org.nz/search-use-collection/search/F18094/

The Hack/Rogers match took place on January 30th 1908 in London at the Oxford Music Hall.

The video is almost 24 minutes in total. It features the whole Hackenschmidt/Rogers match (both falls) and between the falls there's footage from another match. I'm pretty sure the other match is Joe Carroll vs. Peter Gotz from February 3rd 1908, which was the middleweight final of the National Sporting Club's catch-as-catch-can tournament in London at the Alhambra Theatre. There's also some footage of Hack and Rogers posing for the camera.

Surreal to finally see footage of Hack. Also looks like a shoot to me and gives a strong argument against the idea of him as some bodybuilder who was clueless about wrestling. Seemed like the guy he was wrestling didn't have much of an answer for when Hack took his back.
