Ditch
If their four big mid-90s matches, I'd say this was easily the least. Not bad, just not as good.
Loss
Yeah, didn't see much good about this, but I still felt the need to include it in full to paint the full picture of their rivalry.
FLIK
If their four big mid-90s matches 5 Â Yeah, didn't see much good about this Won't argue that it's not the least of their big singles but I actually still liked it quite a lot. Little slower paced and not as much high impact action as the rest but still plenty to enjoy I think.
ohtani's jacket
Chigusa/Ozaki was the best match on this show.
Ditch
8/25/93, this, 11/20/94, 8/30/95. What's the 5th?
FLIK
8/25/93, this, 11/20/94, 8/30/95. What's the 5th? yeah, never mind, got it confused with one of their later ones
Loss
Started off hot, then spiraled into them laying on the mat for the bulk of the match. I wouldn't call it bad, but it was bland and didn't have the excitement the matches between these two normally have. It picked up a little toward the end, but more in a "solid opener" type way than an Aja/Kansai way. Off night.
Kevin Ridge
Interesting referee gear. Starts off well and they are kicking each other pretty hard. Then it seems like they agree to not do that anymore or something. When they go to the mat for so long it just drags. Kansai is hung upside down on the turnbuckle and Aja charges in but Dynamite punches her in the face. That was cool. Kong does her multiple piledrivers in a row that I don’t like. Last few minutes were pretty good though. Too bad there wasn’t more to match leading up to it.
Exposer
The beginning is really good. Then, Aja relies on the crossface to take up a large portion of the match. I didn't like her multiple piledrivers either. Kansai's comeback is good with her stopping Aja mid run while on the turnbuckle upside down and punching her square in the face. The splash mountain tease from the top rope was sick as Kansai just collapses from Aja's weight. The whole your-turn-my-turn yurican/forearm battle was something I enjoyed because it looked like it hurt really bad. The count out spots were pretty good too. Aja wins in a good finish and in a match I probably like more than everybody else. However, I didn't like the middling holds for 5-10 minutes by Aja. I'm new to Joshi so I'll believe everyone that there's better matches between these two. Overall, very good to great match.
soup23
Agree with all the comments here, this started out really hot and I was cheering it on but then Aja went to the chinlock and being 3 hours into watching at this point, I checked out. The ending run got me back into the match but a subpar middle for these two makes it hard for the match to reach its potential.
Loss
Date is 5/22, not 6/4.
PeteF3
Man oh man, I thought this was awesome. It's not the most dynamic matwork in history but for two big female hosses tying each other in knots, it worked fine. And the closing stretch was pretty holy-shit great. Kansai's comebacks from taking all the urakens are absolutely awesome--first she gets some blocks in and turns into a lucha-style abdominal stretch, then later on when she looks dead and buried she comes back to MURDER Aja with a forearm that almost turns the tide. Very young-Misawa-vs.-Hansen-ish layout with the challenger trying to wear down the nigh-unbeatable champ with holds and having the strategy *almost* pay off. No, this isn't as good as 8/93, but I thought this was easily the best of the 3 joshi matches in this little stretch.
Zenjo
This was the biggest card in the history of JWP as they enter the hallowed grounds of Sumo Hall for the first time. The previous bout with Chigusa vs Ozaki had just stolen the show, so there wasn't pressure on the main event to deliver a great match. Which is just as well. Â It was solid enough if unspectacular. The pacing was quite pedestrian through the build, with unexciting matwork. I want to see these two kicking ass with hard strikes and high impact moves. Things were picking up later on with some 9 counts. Underwhelming finish however with no storyline progression. It had it's moments, but other matches in the series kill this so badly it has to go down as a disappointment.
cheapshot
I quite enjoyed this. The middle of the match like others have said was pedestrian, but I enjoyed the heck out of the finish. Thumbs up.
ohtani's jacket
Finally I watched the right Kansai vs. Kong match, and I'm not talking about their 1995 bout. The 5/94 match is the closest thing I've seen to a perfect Kong vs. Kansai bout thus far. Even I'm rolling my eyes as I type this like "sure, the match everybody forgets they had is their best, Daniel," but bear with me. The first 15 minutes sees Kong dominate Kansai and cut off every single comeback she makes. There's some typical Joshi resthold work, but Kong tries to keep it short and pick things up again. Kansai digs a little deeper and starts making her run, and the finishing stretch is full of shit I'd long forgotten about and got a legit reaction out of me. I love biting on near falls. Being the cynical jackass I am it doesn't happen that often, but man was I into this. The finishing stretch went back and forth the way all dramatic bouts should, and even though in the back of mind I knew who won this a combination of not remembering how it panned out and half thinking it was 1994 all over again and happening in real time had me hooked. Fun bout.
Jetlag
Yes, I agree with everything OJ has said. I didn't have a problem with the rest holds because 1. when you are working a match this long, you got to grab a few holds 2. Aja's work was pretty gritty because she was just wrenching the hell out of Kansai's face mostly 3. Aja being ultra dominant added a ton to the match. 4. Going for holds made sense, for example in the opening exchange Aja just overwhelmed Kansai with sumo palm rushes to her face so her desperately going for a headlock was the perfect response, and Aja of course wants to ground Kansai to avoid her own strikes. 5. It's not like there was a ton of hold work anyways, as between the holds Aja would kick the shit out of her opponent and just pick her apart. I prefer this kind of one sided buildup to your average transition by the minute joshi match. Kansai had a few great comebacks including punching Kong in the face and finally that awesome combination of first catching Aja in a weird armlock and then dumping her with an awesome judo style suplex on her shoulder. Aja's cutoffs were strong too, including almost breaking Kansai's spine with her weight which had to be one of the nastiest spots I've seen. The finishing run was pretty much done like a heavyweight boxing match with both of them unloading and doing some awesome KO teases. Aja's selling was literally perfect here as she went from super dominant to stumbling around on her feet after getting brained by Kansai's kicks. I was actually believing in a double KO. Actual finish was primitive and great aswell. Fantastic contest, the 1994 joshi MOTY?
