Poor Buddy Rose. It's sad that this is probably what he's most famous for. I remember this being shown randomly during the 1996 Slammy Awards for no apparent reason.

Reportedly this was one of Vince's most favorite things the company ever produced hence them dusting off the moth balls a few times in later years. IIRC it was the idea of a wrestler/promoter they had hired from some smaller fed. Scott Keith mentioned this once

The world should weep. Because Buddy was an asshole, he ad few friends in the business willing to put him in his rightful place as one of the all-time greats.

I just watched a random match on youtube from 1990 which had Tugboat taking on this version of Rose. Buddy is so big that he pretty much looks like he's the same size as Tugboat, if not bigger.

 

It did make me think though: why was Rose lumbered with this gimmick at the same time as they were pushing Tugboat? Couldn't Rose be repackaged as a legit fat man wrestler?

 

I also watched a random Bossman vs. Rose match from 90 as well, it has a DiBiase promo all the way through it as Rose is jobbed out. There wasn't a single Rose jobber match that made the set?

I just watched a random match on youtube from 1990 which had Tugboat taking on this version of Rose. Buddy is so big that he pretty much looks like he's the same size as Tugboat, if not bigger.

First time I saw this "new" Rose was at a February house show, also against Tugboat (who had already been profiled in WWF Magazine as "Tugboat Thomas" but may not have been on TV yet himself). I was in complete disbelief. The match itself was one of the greatest smoke-and-mirrors performances I've ever seen, as Rose pulled out every stooging trick in his arsenal--challenging Tugboat to one-arm push-ups, trying to do a test of strength and having to climb the ropes to do it, etc.--to get a watchable match out of the Tugster.

 

Oh yeah...this. They certainly struck gold in landing an annoyingly perky announcer. Why do I get the feeling that Vince's favorite part of this was "1-800-LAR-DASS"?

Not knowing Buddy like the rest of you I can see the humor in this segment. It’s not something that is going to build up a wrestler as serious though. He was looking huge though.

I highly doubt Vince saw anything serious whatsoever in Buddy, Kevin, especially with that look. For all we know, he was brought into the company mainly for this commercial, with whatever matches they got out of him a bonus for Vince and a payday for him.

 

The commercial itself is surprisingly good for a parody. Not necessarily funny, but well done. It's a pity that Vince couldn't let his booking be this creative as well.
