Charles, you wont believe this but Lightning Kid didn't make the cut. I honestly didn't think of him when Parv was asking me if there was guys missing because I threw out some USWA and USWA TX names. However, I did create a Snowman/Tony Atlas led tag team with Teddy Long managing that feels like a Loss special.

Might as well share the rules and talent pool here. I'm sure Loss will enjoy Chad's love letter to the USWA.

The Scenario: It's 1990 and the 20-year old Sheikh Mansour has decided that he loves American pro wrestling and would like to own it. His father, the multi-billionaire Emir Zayed II, decides that for his birthday he'll give his son what he wants. He promptly buys WWF from Vince McMahon for an undisclosed fee, but fearing that this is not enough goes ahead and buys WCW from Ted Turner and USWA from Jerry Jarrett too -- along with all of the contracts for every company, with the sole exception of Kamala who was fired on the spot. But this is not enough for the young Mansour. He wants to see the best wrestling possible on well-booked, well-paced supercards. So Zayed appoints four trusted wrestling "experts" with the task -- but to make things more interesting, he sets them in competition with each other. The winner gets to run the company with the roster he has put together; as for the three losers ...

The Rules:

1. There is a talent pool of 160 people.

2. Rosters are to be selected using "draft picks" in serpentine order; no one gets left behind; no picks can be skipped.

3. After the rosters are selected, there will be a chance for listeners to vote in a poll for who has the best roster and the best booked card. (10 points for each vote)

4. In addition to filling up a roster of at least 30 wrestlers, each booker must also ensure that they have drafted a broadcast team and other key non-wrestlers. They must have:

- A commentary team (at least two, can have up to three)

- An interviewer (at least one, can have up to two)

- A ring announcer (can only have one)

- An on-air authority figure

- A referee

- A manager (at least two, can have up to four)

Bookers will incur a 5-point penalty if any of these positions are not filled and a 10-point penalty for failing to have at least 30 active wrestlers on the roster. You cannot employ obvious non-wrestlers in wrestling roles -- for example, Gordon Solie is not stepping in the ring to compete, period. "Margin calls" where nonwrestlers have wrestling ability and have been employed as wrestlers (e.g. Bobby Heenan or Lord Alfred Hayes) can be decided by the High Council.

5. No one pulls double duty: e.g. Roddy Piper cannot be a commentator and an active wrestler; Bobby Heenan cannot do colour and be a manager.

6. Bookers get a four-week lead-in time to book their supercard.

7. Every single wrestler on the roster must be used on the supercard. There will be a 5-point penalty for every wrestler not used.

8. Bookers must establish their world heavyweight champion, secondary champion and tag champions. They may create further titles as they please.

9. Battle Royales may have no more than 20 wrestlers and there can only be one on each card. Bad News Brown has it written into his contract that he cannot be booked as part of a battle royale.

Heard the first part and enjoyed it immensely. My brother and I used to do this sort of thing to create Survivor Series style cards. We'd end up with some really odd teams and matchups. This hit that nostalgic sweet spot for me.

I can relate with Parv's frustration at having a plan and then quickly finding out that it's not going as you envisioned. I await the grand plan for Team Lard.

I do have one complaint. I did not see the draft pool list before listening and I kept waiting for someone to be picked. Round after round with no mention of him and then I realized you guys did not have him in the pool. How could you guys forget Sgt. Slaughter? You gave Ranger Ross some love but not the Sarge. For shame. ;)

And poor Kamala! I might just book a card with some of the neglected wrestlers not included in the draft just to get Kamala some work.

I'll listen to part two tomorrow. Some interesting rosters for all four of you. Without knowing the booking yet, the potential Savage/Funk match is in the lead as my favorite so far. Of course, it'll depend on what you guys came up with. Great show!

I won't speak for soup but i'm guessing he was looking at the beginning of 1990 for the roster list - which could be why Slaughter slipped through.

You should totally book a card with those missed. And dont forget to vote!

I actually came up with the 160. I sat down and just wrote down every name I could think of from late 89 / early 90 and before I knew it there were like 130 guys there. Then I went and had a look at cards, yearbook and Brick listings for anyone I missed before Chad checked it. I had them subdivided by WWF, WCW, USWA and then a few interesting cases from elsewhere (Hansen, Vader, Zybysko -- all on that Feb Tokyo card I'd recently watched)

Chad mentioned some more USWA guys and naturally I was all like "nah man SD Jones".

What was Sarge even doing in early 90? Completely slipped my mind and didn't see him on the cards.

I'd love to see a card of guys who didn't make the cut. Owen was another one. Zeus. Rip Morgan. Nitron. Got yourself a hell of main event there :D

He came back to WWF with vignettes and then started his run to the title. Probably should have made the 160 and would be interesting to see where he would slot. I don't think this will be the last draft of this type we do though and Slaughter should fit in for some other years I have in mind.

Yeah, Slaughter was in the AWA in the first half of 1990. He was captain of one of the teams in the Team Challenge Series. The reason Slaughter stood out was that I thought that the list was compiled by looking at the top cards of the year (PPVs, SNME, Clashes, etc.) and Slaughter was a team captain at the Survivor Series.

I already voted for the best roster, I'm still waiting to hear the second part before voting for best booking. I'll provide some feedback here after listening.

I'll give that card with the "leftovers" a go. I'll follow the same roster rules you guys had. One question, it's only wrestlers that were active in 90 and could realistically have worked for a company in the States, right? I'll post a roster here before doing the booking just to make sure it's ok by the rules set forth.

I just listened to the second part and it was interesting to hear the thought process of booking the cards (particularly adjusting previous plans according to who was actually drafted by each of you). I’ll post some more specific feedback about each of the cards soon.

In the meantime, I had mentioned I was going to try to book a card with the “leftovers”. Deciding on a roster based on the wrestlers not included was harder than I thought it would be and not because of the scarcity of wrestlers. Quite the opposite, there were a lot of good names available, granted not a lot of really top star names for 1990, but good wrestlers to have on a roster. I’ll pass on Zeus and Nitron though.

I’ll list the wrestlers I have selected according to what the rules are for this booking challenge. If there is anyone on this list that should not be included (be it they were not active in 1990, too low profile, accidentally repeated someone that was already drafted, or it is someone that realistically could not have worked for a U.S based company that year), let me know so I can make a switch. I tried to stick with guys that had already had some sort of exposure for one of the notable companies in the U.S or would appear at some point that year.

My list of 32 is as follows:

Black Bart

Brady Boone

Bobby Fulton

Buddy Landell

Brian Knobbs

Col. DeBeers

Dick Murdoch

Dick Slater

Dustin Rhodes

Dutch Mantel

Jerry Sags

John Nord

Kamala

Madusa

Magnificent Mimi

Mike Enos

Nikita Koloff

Owen Hart

Rip Morgan

Rip Rogers

Scott Hall

Scott Norton

Sgt. Slaughter

Steve Armstrong

Terry Gordy

Texas Hangmen Killer

Texas Hangmen Psycho

The Trooper

Tim Horner

Tommy Rogers

Tracy Smothers

Wayne Bloom

The one I’m having trouble with is coming up with my 8 non-wrestlers. I’ve come up with the following list of possible selections but I’m not really sure what other options there may be. If anyone has any suggestions let me know. I’ll make a final selection of non-wrestlers shortly, but I want to make sure I haven’t forgotten any possible 1990 candidate for the non-wrestler positions.

Adnan al-Kaissie

Brother Love

Bruno Sammartino

Danny Davis

Diamond Dallas Page

Eddie Marlin

Frenchy Martin

Hugo Savinovich

James Beard

Ken Resnick

Lee Marshall

Lord Littlebrook

Missy Hyatt

Nick Bockwinkel

Sapphire

Skandor Akbar

Verne Gagne

This reminds me of the days I spent writing rule sets for alternate universes played out on TNM, with the cards written up and distributed via an e-mail list. Great times. Apparently TNM still exists... could be super entertaining to plug the cards in and see what ratings they get (recognizing that ratings on TNM were very late 90s smark-y).

Actually have a fairly good core of guys to work with Boricua.

As far as a fantasy league type thing for this, I had a lot of fun for this show but would probably be receiving my divorce papers if I did this regularly as Im almost positive I put more thought into the booking here than I did on buying my first house.

If anyone here has actually voted on the PTBN poll ... specifically for Brad ... please let me know. How has this happened?

My Jesse Ventura-style conspiracy here is that Brad's votes consist of: Brad, Brad's iphone, Brad's laptop, Brad's iPad, Brad in work, and so on. :P

The deadline for voting will be either when episode #52 (Clash 11) drops, or the second I start leading the poll -- whichever one happens first :D
