Truly R.I.P. to one of the biggest names in Canadian wrestling. It should be noted that "Grand Prix Wrestling" in the 70s (the promotion Mad Dog was involved with) had better ratings than the venerable "Hockey Night In Canada" in an NHL mad country.

My condolences to Khawk as he is the resident AWA guru/maven here. For anyone who reads the CANoe.ca article linked before : "Vachon the Cochon" (cochon means "pig")

As Mad Dog used to growl....

"It's not da size of the dog in da fight, it's da size of the fight in da DOG!"

He was one of a kind.

A sad day but one that, with Mad Dog's rapidly declining health, was coming sooner than later.

RIP to a real icon from my childhood. It makes me happy that his family has a video record of his life story to show future generations.

KanadianKrusty noted the signifigance of Vachon's death here in Canada, and I would suspect that many Canadian news outlets on every level will have a little something about his death to mention, especially in Quebec.

Very sad. I was lucky enough to have met Mad Dog at the Thesz/Tragos HOF a number of times. It was hard watching his health decline so much the past few years. This year at the banquet, he was introduced and given a standing ovation. He was at the table next to me, and I heard him say quietly, "Very impressive!"

Growing up in the AWA territory, he was definitely a name that everyone knew.

RIP

They just mentioned his death on CBC2 here in Vancouver and played a clip of him cutting a promo. Unfortunately his pro wrestling career was pretty much summed up as "he wrestled for the WWF in the 1980s". They also claimed he was in 13,000 "fights" during his career.

Yep...that's CBC 2 for you.

"My deepest condolences to the family of Maurice 'Mad Dog' Vachon, a Canadian wrestling legend," tweeted (Canadian) Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Sympathies were also extended by the leader of the Official Opposition, whose party counted Paul Vachon as a candidate in the 1980s and 1990s.

"A true legend from the glory days of wrestling has just left us," tweeted NDP Leader Tom Mulcair. "My condolences to the family of Maurice 'Mad Dog' Vachon."

Impressive. I never realized Maurice Vachon was such a huge name. I really only knew him as the crazy uncle of Luna and the guy whose leg was used as a foreign object in the infamous Diesel vs Micheals IYH match. Always sad to see a legend go.

Thought some might get a kick out of that :

Yeah, the story is getting good mainstream media coverage up here. Reminds me of when Carpentier and Kowalski passed.

Mad Dog was one of those guys I didn't see what was the big deal about. I was slow to come around to him during the AWA set but he just slowly grew on me. Seeking out more footage of his career I really began to enjoy him. As mentioned by a couple others the guy really was a character. You're not getting hight level work rate stuff but he was fun to watch and listen to. Worth going out of your way to seek out more of his stuff.
