Timbo Slice
If there's a Part 2 of this, count me in for hoping it's another 3 hour show. That timeframe had so much going on that breaking it down would be incredible, and I don't think Naylor was joking when he said they could talk for 12 hours about it. Another Bay Area note: Around the same time APW was coming up, Morgan and Modest broke off to form Pro Wrestling Iron after they had their run in NOAH. Had a working agreement with bringing in NOAH talent to some pretty interesting spots, a lot like Hash in the garage. Misawa came out for a couple shows, and EricR has a crazy story about going to one of their shows, but that's up to him to tell it. They ran the CLOVERDALE CITRUS FAIR, which was incredible to me. The GHC Jr. Heavyweight title was defended in a city whose population at the time was smaller than the Budokan.

Dylan Waco
Wanted to note that I totally agree with Naylor on Red. He was ALWAYS one of my favorites from the early days, if not my sentimental favorite. I think part of this may have been that my brothers had seen him via the TNA weekly tv stuff, so I gave them my copy of the Ki v. Red match on VHS and it was one of the first times I remember them calling up and marking the fuck out. And they were still just kids. In any case I always thought Red was really underrated both as an influential figure during that early wave of indie wrestling, as a dynamic spot worker, as a guy who could sell his ass off AND as a worker now. He has popped up in the last several years having really good matches for HOG but I'm one of the few people who watches random shit on YouTube. I also loved the Wildside talk, in part because so many of those guys were guys I saw live a few times, and Devon (Exposer) saw once a week or more during the same time period at North Georgia/East TN shows. Guys like Adam Jacobs, Slim J, Tank, Iceberg, Dan Wilson, et. were staples of that scene...hell they still are. The Dan Wilson stuff got me laughing given that he now does a Black Metal "Reverend Dan Wilson" gimmick.
Exposer
I probably saw Tank-Iceberg brawls or Tank/Iceberg versus poor bastards tags a million times when I was a kid. I probably only saw Dan Wilson a few times back then because he was with Wildside mostly. I saw him off and on for a few years in the mid-2000s. Then about five years ago he showed up in face paint with a staff and skull at the top and my uncle and I couldn't figure out who it was at first. EDIT: Dan Wilson was actually one of the promoters of NWA Chattanooga from 2010-2012. That's where I think I first saw his Reverend gimmick. Bierschwale
I'm gonna hazard a guess that this is the Juvy-Storm match that came up: God, that's awful commentary, but still a highly enjoyable indie 1.0 match for a promotion for which my most vivid memory was reading a discussion on the DVDVR board when I was 12 about an Extreme Associates girl having an anal prolapse on film. Jessica Darlin, maybe? But that's neither here nor there.
WesHatch
Thanks very much bradhindsight. I really do appreciate that. A name I forgot to bring up in regards to Wildside was The Allstar Cru Jones who was doing a modern day Al Bundy gimmick. He played a D-bag ex high school football player. A very simple worker but the heat that guy got from the crowd was amazing. Not to mention coming out to Super Thug by NOREGA made me laugh. Wildside really evolved my taste in wrestling at the time. Admittedly I was a bit of a flips and stiff kick snob but going to those shows and seeing what worked with that audience was a real eye opener. WrestlingPower
I too loved the show. To me the indy renaissance really spanned the late 90s into the early 2000s but I can see how THAT would have been an interminably long podcast. I was lucky enough to live within 4 hours between ECWA and OMEGA stuff and as most know I filmed a lot of that stuff. There was also Maryland Championship Wrestling that featured a lot of stuff with Joey, Christian, Julio etc. That late 90s time period with Lance Diamond, Ace Darling, Devon Storm, Reckless Youth really paved the way for the early 2000s stuff. To me once ROH took off it really kind of overtook interest in a lot of other indies. IWA Mid-South still maintained a following for a while as they were almost like a feeder to ROH. I'm rambling now but this show featured so many name drops & memories of guys I hadn't thought of in 10 years or more. Also liked the mini-discussion on just how much $, time & effort we all put in back in that era to acquire footage & trade it around. I've got a plenty of stuff from this era if anyone wants to do some comps spawning off this show. Looking forward to part 2.
ZThomas
Murcury as the new Pat Patterson of this era is amazing to think about. I remember thinking MLW was going to be the next ECW, reading the first few results in PWI and reading about all the top All japan talent coming in I was hype because i been reading about Puroresu through them and I wasnt exposed to tape trading or even indy wrestling as a whole till I got high speed internet. I got Sunshine network because of MLW, I became a die-hard ROH guy after MLW stopped airing though. I actually thought Teddy harts H2 promotion was going to be the next MLW. Homicide was my favorite indy wrestler, I wish Monsta Mack coulda got more of a shot a singles after Mafia left ROH though even though if Cide and Maff didnt have a falling out Maff woulda been a bigger deal than he became. This show put CZW in a better light for me because I never really followed it I always wondered why Hero worked CZW rather than ROH in the early days, Even to this day I wonder how Hero wouldve done in the very early years of ROH
overbooked
I'm really enjoying these shows, and it is good to see Kris evolve into more of a host/chair of discussions with each episode. I think there is a real art to bringing people in, knowing when to contribute and when to hold back. I would love to hear more of a discussion of the legacy of this period. Obviously a lot of those workers went on to bigger and better things, which would be worth exploring. But I'd also love to hear another perspective: what were the negatives? Did this lead to a style that was too spotty? Was it smart to be risking life and limb in front of 25 guys and a camcorder? Was match quality over traditional terriorital style storytelling a good move or not? Was it really cool that Low Ki (among others) beat up on fellow workers? Was the breakdown between workers and fans so that they became friends actually good for business? Essentially, it was lovely hearing such enthusiasm for three hours, but I'd love to hear a debate between that enthusiasm and someone more grumpy! KrisZ
I get the whole point/counterpoint theme and yes it is good to have debate but this was intended to be a markout fest so that's why it was what it was. There are a lot of valid points regarding the negatives which do need to be touched on later
Matt D
I want to refine what i babbled on before into two sentences. 1.) The internet created a larger community of people, an audience that could be easily reached, that were all tuned into each other, and that were willing to spend money. This group always existed but the internet raised its number to a huge degree, made contacting them, presenting a product, and distributing that product far, far easier. 2.) Therefore, for the first time ever, that community, that group, was catered to in a big way by wrestling promotions (albeit independent ones) as a huge part of their revenue. We wanted candy. They gave us candy. We ate too much candy.
WrestlingPower
A few more notes I thought of: 1) I didn't see a whole lot of TWA but I seem to remember their TV announcer being one of the best around at the time. Hell the idea of discussing indy announcers could be a show in & of itself. 2) I don't think you touched on the various Memphis groups. MCW & MPPW were both discussed a bit on the WC history of developmental podcast though it would have been interesting to hear Naylor's take. 3) I LOVED MLW. I happened to get Sunshine at the time as I had DirecTV and that was a highlight for sure. Such a good mix of guys and it was also fascinating to see the starts & stops of the promotion itself & how the talent changed each time. The Funk/Corino feud and the Wargames stack up against anything else going on at the time. MLW also did a nice companion piece to ROH's Punk/Raven feud at the same time. KrisZ
I was going for mainly 2001-03 which in that time Memphis groups were pretty much dormant after WWE pulled the plug on MCW.
RazorbladeKiss87
Just downloaded the show and haven't listened yet but I gotta say I'm pumped for it. I love when Naylor is on a podcast because his enthusiasm is contagious, especially when it comes to early 2000s indie stuff. This was when my fandom evolved from being a grade school kid who watched WCW, WWF and ECW (sometimes) to being a kid on the internet and discovering message boards and tape trading. So thanks in advance for this and I will probably chime in with some thoughts after I listen.

WingedEagle
I finally got through this recently and enjoyed the hell out of it even though my familiarity with many of the groups discussed is limited to reading about them in the Observer. I know the name Rob Naylor from this board, but his enthusiasm is infectious and ropes you in even when its a subject you're not even hot for. Good times. Loss
Any chance we could get a mega list at some point of all the must-see stuff from this era? Not just for great matches that hold up for now, but for fully understanding the era. I was a fan, but I was dead broke and could only watch wrestling if it was free on TV, so I sadly missed all of it.

BillThompson
It's always interesting to me that OMEGA and ECWA (at least pre-2001) are generally omitted from talk of modern indies. For me those two promotions are what started the idea of the modern indie.
