Shit, all of the Toronto TV I have seen ended up as house shows with outside talent OR JCP footage.

Toronto wasn't a real promotion. It was just another loop of Crockett with some Canada Titles and talent mixed kind of. Strange stuff.

The Maple Leaf TV matches were generally very short other than main event type matches....it was mostly MLG spliced with JCP TV

Well it looks like Jack Tunney is trying a new method instead of relying too heavily on other promotions.

I run the TV the day before Halifax plus there is a bunch of local autograph sessions.

I can't believe you gave a TV taping to those dirty Monctonians. LOL.

You guys should be able to do well in Halifax. In the 70's, The Forum was being run weekly with 3,000-4,000 attendance. Running less frequently with joint cards, you can probably do even better.

Maple Leaf Wrestling presents Wrestling Night in Canada

July 17, 1983 at Convention Center in Hamilton, Ontario

The opening video package of Wrestling Night in Canada opens the show featuring clips of: Greg Valentine, Wahoo McDaniel, Stephen Petipas, Jesse Ventura, Ivan Koloff, Leo Burke, Rocky Johnson and ends with a clip of Rick Martel being awarded the NWA Canadian Title.

Billy Red Lyons, Mike McMann and Jesse Ventura are in the announce booth and welcome us to today's show. They talk about the Ivan Koloff and The Super Russian winning the NWA Canadian Tag Team Titles and speculate about who the Super Russian is under the mask. Jack Tunney will address that situation later tonight. They then talk about tonight's Bret Hart vs Jesse Ventura main event. Jesse trash talks Hart and says stay with us, as The Body Shop with Bobby Bass, Cuban Assassasin and Chicky Starr is coming up after this commercial break, then he has to go get ready for tonight's main event.

-COMMERCIAL (1)-

It is now time for "The Body Shop" with Jesse Ventura. His bodyguard The Masked Samurai stands guard.

This week's guests are Bobby Bass, Cuban Assassin and Chicky Starr. They come out to salsa music and look very festive. They start trashing other tag teams stating none stand up to them. Martel is the NWA Canadian Champion and can't focus on tag teams. Burke & Petipas just lost. Nobody knows who the Super Russian is and they destroyed the Marcus brothers. The Cubans are the future of tag team wrestling in Maple Leaf Wrestling and everybody should get used to it.

Jesse says he has a video given to him by an unknown source that says play for The Cubans. In the video is a Puerto Rican man asking why Chicky has been avoding him, since he's been trying to contact him and that he wants Chicky to come home. In a rage Chicky Star storms off as Bass, Assassin and Ventura look confused.

-COMMERCIAL (2)-

1. Nobuhiko Takada vs Bob Marcus

Takada is on tour from New Japan Pro-Wrestling and will be in Oshawa tomorrow night taking on Ben Bassarab. Takada and Marcus have a back and forth contest until Takada hits a submission for the win.

Winner - Nobuhiko Takada @ 5:42

A short video is played showing highlights of the Canada Cup with Valentine vs Wahoo and hyping their match tomorrow night in Oshawa.

-COMMERCIAL (3)-

2. "King Kong" Angelo Mosca vs Joe Marcus

Angelo Mosca dominates as the announcers play up him facing Martel next week for the NWA Canadian Title.

Winner - Angelo Mosca @ 4:21

-COMMERCIAL (4)-

Jack Tunney is concerned about the results of the NWA Canadian Tag Team TItles tournament. Koloff was supposed to team with Smirnoff, but instead teamed with The Super Russian to win the belts. Tunney has learned that Smirnoff is in Japan, so that the masked Russian is not Smirnoff. Also, they cheated their way to the belts with help from their new manager Don Carson. Tunney states that the referee's decision is final, however, The Russians will have to defend the belts against the two other teams in that tournament in the near future (vs Tony Garea & Rick Martel on August 1st in Ottawa and vs Leo Burke & Stephen Petipas on August 2nd in Kingston!).

The announcers talk about these two announced matches for the future and speculate about the identity of The Super Russian!

-COMMERCIAL (5)-

3. "Big" Stephen Petipas vs Rick Patterson

Petipas takes apart Patterson and looks in fine form heading into the US vs Canada Series at Maple Leaf Gardens.

Winner - Stephen Petipas @ 6:01

-COMMERCIAL (6)-

The announcers set up a video that was sent in from Jim Crocket Promotions in North Carolina. The video plays and "Nature Boy" Ric Flair appears. He insults Canada while promoting the States and then brings out his 4 partners for Maple Leaf Gardens on July 26th in Barry Darsow and The Fabulous Freebirds. The Freebirds cut a promo and in addition challenge any three Canadians to face them tomorrow night in Oshawa!

-COMMERCIAL (7)-

Back from the break we learn that Leo Burke, Stephen Petipas & Rocky Johnson have accepted the challenge of The Fabulous Freebirds for tomorrow night in Oshawa. They talk up Rick Martel defending the Canadian Title against former Champion Angelo Mosca next week on Television.

4. Jesse "The Body" Ventura w/ The Masked Samurai vs Bret Hart

Bret Hart has an early shine sequence, but that is cut off by the Samurai tripping up Bret. After a few minutes of posing and powers moves by Jesse, Bret mounts a comeback and has Ventura on the run only for Mr. Saito to appear at ringside and nail Bret with salt. Jesse does the backbreaker for the win!

Winner - Jesse Ventura @ 8:56

After the match Jesse Vetnura, Mr. Saito and The Masked Samurai celebrate together as Bret is helped to the back.

Dark Matches:

Mr. Saito def. Ben Bassarab @ 10:21

Leo Burke & Rocky Johnson def. Bobby Bass & Cuban Assasin @ 11:11

Rick Martel def. Chicky Starr @ 12:14

Jesse in the main kind of brings things down a bit. The Freebirds match sounds fun, but I think Flair/Martel is the big matchup of the next few years.

I'm hoping, it will be run in Toronto and Greensoboro at the very least. Contact Jack Tunney and Jim Crocket if you want that great match up in your town.

Jesse is all character and this is his last singles match (most likely) as he is transitioning to only hosting The Body Shop, being the colour guy and managing Mr. Saito and The Masked Samurai.

Nick McMann, Billy Red Lyons and Jesse "The Body" Ventura are at the announce booth to welcome us to the show. Jesse says he has a big scoop as The Russians will be on The Body Shop this week and he will try to find out who the Super Russian is.
They also hype the main event of Rick Martel defending the NWA Canadian Title against former Champion Angelo Mosca, as well as the big US vs Canada series in Maple Leaf Gardens on Tuesday.
We get a video montage set to "Beat It' by Michael Jackson of all the set up to the US vs Canada match series, including some footage of Martel in Jim Crocket Promotions and Georgia.
-COMMERCIAL (1)
1. Leo Burke, Rocky Johnson, Ben Bassarab & Stephen Petipas vs Gary Royal, Killer Karl Krupp, Paul Christy & Rick Patterson

Winners - Leo Burke, Rocky Johnson, Ben Bassarab & Stephen Petipas @ 7:42
-COMMERCIAL (2)
The announcers hype up some footage sent to us by Jim Crocket Promotions. We get the inside of a bar where Ric Flair, Buddy Roberts, Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy and Barry Darsow are hanging out. They are drinking and mocking Canadians, especially Martel. Flair and Hayes joke about which one of them can get with the pretty blonde in the corner first, but as they are speaking Gordy walks up to the girl and they leave together to the shock of Hayes and Flair.
-COMMERCIAL (3)
2. Greg "The Hammer" Valentine vs Nick DeCarlo
Greg is cocky and does quite a beat down on DeCarlo before making him submit to the figure-four. Valentine even does a Wahoo War Dance to mock McDaniel. Word from the back is that Wahoo did not see it, as was preparing for his match tonight.
WInner - Greg Valentine @ 4:42
-COMMERCIAL (4)
It is now time for "The Body Shop" with Jesse Ventura.
This week's guests are "The Russian Bear" Ivan Koloff, Super Russian and their manager Don Carson. Jesse asks The Super Russian what it is like to team with a legend like Koloff, but Carson interrupts him. The Super Russian refuses to speak in English. Carson notes that the USSR has proved it is the best country in the world in hockey and is now proving it in wrestling. Carson runs down The Super Russians history as a super athlete from being the son of a legendary Olympic wrestler to getting all the best training. Koloff then talks about how they will keep the titles no matter who is put in front of them.
-COMMERCIAL (5)
On the way to the ring Wahoo says this tag match is for Bret Hart to prepare for the six-man tag team with him against these two and Ventura on Tuesday in the Gardens. However, he was told what Valentine did and on August 20th in Oshawa when he gets a singles match with Valentine, he will destroy him.
3. Wahoo McDaniel & Tiger Conway Jr. vs Mr. Saito & Masked Samurai
Jesse leaves the announcers area in the middle of the match and is able to trip up Conway giving Saito the win with the Saito Suplex.
Winner - Mr. Saito & Masked Samurai @ 8:49
-COMMERCIAL (6)
The announcers hype up the main event of next week's show of Stephen Petipas vs Super Russian and Wahooo McDaniel will be the guest on The Body Shop. They talk about the upcoming main event coming up after this break.

The announcers are interrupted by Angelo Rivera the Puerto Rican who was on the video played on The Body Shop last week. He calls out The Cuban team and out comes "No Class" Bobby Bass and Cuban Assassin. Angelo wants to know where Chicky Starr is, but he is told, by the Cubans, that he refuses to talk to him. That is when Angelo reveals that he is Chicky Starr's brother and he just wants him to come home to Puerto Rico with him. At this point Chick Starr attacks him from behind and with the help of Bass and Assassin they beat him down until security separates them.
-COMMERCIAL (7)
Main Event: NWA Canadian Champion Rick Martel vs "King Kong' Angelo Mosca
Martel does the best selling he can do on Mosca's offense to try to make this match worthwhile. With Mosca being the former Champion that was never defeated he is very confident. He was even able to bust Martel open on the ring post. In the end Martel makes Mosca submit to the Boston Crab.
Winner - Rick Martel @ 11:05
After the match Leo Burke, Rocky Johnson, Ben Bassarab and Stephen Petpas come to ringside to help Martel celebrate and to put up a strong front going into Maple Leaf Gardens on Tuesday to face the Amiercan team.

Joel Deaton def. Tony Garea @ 8:44
Chicky Starr & Cuban Assassin def. Bob & Joe Marcus @ 6:32

I like trying to bait the Super Russian into talking a lot. Given the build to the Canada vs. USA setup I'm guessing this isn't going to end on Tuesday. Should bring in the fans for sure, especially once Flair and co. get the upper hand.

Also, Terry Gordy as the ladies' man is great. I can just see him challenging Martel after Flair is done because he figures he already gets more women, so why shouldn't he be the champ to go along with it?

Really good stuff as usual. The menagerie of heels trying to pick up women was golden, and Martel will look like the biggest star in the world facing off against all of these world class challengers...and Barry Darsow. I honestly did wonder how Ventura would fit in with the Canadian roster, but so far he's integrating very well, even though ole' Frank Tunney will have to be careful with royalties, considering the more worker friendly Canadian government. :)

Maple Leaf Wrestling presents Wrestling Night in Canada
July 31, 1983 at Ed Lumley Arena in Cornwall, Ontario
The opening video package of Wrestling Night in Canada opens the show featuring clips of: Greg Valentine, Wahoo McDaniel, Stephen Petipas, Jesse Ventura, Ivan Koloff, Leo Burke, Rocky Johnson and ends with a clip of Rick Martel being awarded the NWA Canadian Title.
Nick McMann, Billy Red Lyons and Jesse "The Body" Ventura are at the announce booth to welcome us to the show. Jesse hypes having Wahoo McDaniel on The Body Shop. Even though Jesse's team beat Wahoo's team at Maple Leaf Gardens that will not be the question tonight. Jesse has some questions about why Wahoo has such a vendetta against Greg "The Hammer" Valentine.
The announcers hype the main event of one half of the NWA Canadian Tag Team Champions The Super Russian vs "Big" Stephen Petipas. Even though the identity of the masked Russian is unknown, he has proven to be very successful. This should be a great prelude to Petipas & Burke challenging for the Tag Titles in Kingston on August 2nd.
They then go over the events of Maple Leaf Gardens, including the big win by Rick Martel and Team Canada over The Americans. We are then shown a clip taped after the main event in Toronto:
Jim Crockett is backstage with "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair and they are irate. After a moment of Crocket complaining about the over the top DQ rule not being in place in Canada and not being informed before hand, Flair cuts him off. He cuts a classic Flair promo running down Martel and Canada while also claiming he will take the NWA Canadian Title back to the Carolinas on August 8th.
COMMERCIAL#1
1. Paul Christy vs Jerry Brisco
A technical match up which saw Brisco roll up Christy for the win. The announcers talk about how all the stars of wrestling want to be in Maple Leaf!
Winner - Jerry Brisco @ 6:43
COMMERCIAL#2
The announcers introduce a video shot earlier today of The Cubans.
We see Cuban Assassin, "No Class" Bobby Bass and Chicky Starr in Toronto at a local Cuban restaurant. After the Assassin orders a traditional arroz con pollo, Bass tries to order hambugers and Starr tries to order qué rica vida. After some blank stares from the waitress the Assassin says some things in Spanish as she disappears. The three of them pull out cigars and talk about how they are the greatest tag team in wrestling. They are going to prove that soon. They are interrupted by the waitress bringing out the arroz con pollo for the Assassin and moros y cristianos for Bass and Starr who turn their noses up at it.
Coming back by the video McMan and Lyons mock the Cubans for their fake patriotism, while Jesse defends them.
COMMERCIAL#3
2. "Outlaw" Joel Deaton vs Angelo Mosca Jr.
Deaton crushes Mosco, who gets in zero offense and after a big boot, Mosca Jr. was out cold.
Winner - Joel Deaton @ 4:06
COMMERCIAL#4
Back from the break and we cut to a video of "Dirty" Dick Murdoch in Japan. He says that Jack Tunney offered him a lot of money to come into Toronto and put this place on the map and that he will be here next week on The Body Shop.

Jesse Ventura is ecstatic and brags about his exclusive interview next week.
We then run down the shows that are happening this week, including: August 1st in Ottawa (featuring Martel & Garea challenging for the Tag Titles against the Russians), August 2nd in Kingston (featuring Burke & Petipas challening for the Tag Titles against the Russians, if still champs), August 6th in North Bay (featuring Martel & Garea against Mr. Saito & Jesse Ventura) and the TV taping next week in Sudbury.
Jesse says that Saito and himself will destroy Martel in North Bay and then on August 30th Saito will take the NWA Canadian Title!
McMan and Lyons then talk about next week, here on "Wrestling Night in Canada" Wahoo McDaniel will take on Ivan Koloff in a huge match.
COMMERCIAL#5
3. Chicky Starr w/ "No Class" Bobby Bass vs Rocky Johnson
The Cuban sensation Chicky Starr used Bass early on to gain the advantage. Starr and Bass cheated often and Rocky fought hard back. Rocky finally had Starr in compromising position when Bass and The Cuban Assassin rushed the ring with a chair and knocked Rocky down, causing him to bleed. Wrestlers from the back rushed the ring to escort the Cubans out of there and then help Rocky to the back.
Winner - Rocky Johnson via DQ @ 11:02
COMMERCIAL#6

McMann and Lyons say we will get an update on Rocky next week and that Jack Tunney will address this situation as well.
It is now time for The Body Shop with Jesse "The Body" Ventura! Jesse is accompanied by Masked Samurai, his bodyguard. Jesse doesn't understand why Wahoo McDaniel is so mad at Greg "The Hammer" Valentine and Don Carson, since they beat him fairly at the Canada Cup, but he will find out tonight as he introduces Wahoo.
Wahoo is not mad that he lost to Valentine, just that Valentine will not face him like a man. He wants Valentine one on one as soon as possible. This brings out Don Carson along with Ivan Koloff and The Super Russian. Carson claims that Valentine proved everything he has to against Wahoo at the Canada Cup and that Wahoo was not worthy to face him. Koloff then grabs the microphone and let's Wahoo know that if he wants a piece of The Hammer, he has to get through The Bear first next week! They have an intense stare down as the Russian group heads to the ring for the main event. Wahoo calls Valentine a chicken and if he has to destroy Koloff first, he will next week!
COMMERCIAL#7
4. The Super Russian w/ Don Carson & Ivan Koloff vs "Big" Stephen Petipas

"Dirty" Dick Murdoch is welcomed to The Body Shop. Jesse acts all friendly, but Dick looks a little stand offish. Dick says he is here, because this is where the competition is. Jesse gets mad, because he thought they had a deal. He pulls a contract out and expected Dick to sign it. It turns out, Ventura thought Dick Murdoch would be his new charge.
