That's disappointing since that was likely the only way I was ever really going to delve into Joshi.

1. Watch more lucha. I really loved my introduction to lucha on the 80s set but it's really hard for me to just watch random matches on youtube and not full shows in context. I'll just have to get over that so I can see more Satanico, Brazo de Plata, Santo and all the rest from the 80s & 90s. 2. Get back to watching Southeastern/Continental. Did a lot of digging to find pretty much everything that's out there and then got burnt out from trying to organize 100+ discs and put everything in order. Jimmy Golden in 1981 is so good it'd probably even make El-P change his mind.

Definitely not, there's that infamous Cage match with Austin Idol where Lawler gets the lamest haircut ever for a loser of a hair match.

Anyone know if this show Terry Funk put on in October 93 in Amarillo made tape? I would like to see the Murdoch/Dory Funk vs. Heavenly Bodies tag for sure and Bossman/Hansen sounds interesting as well.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the "little guy who carries himself like a super heavyweight" Crash Holly gimmick except for the fact that I don't think Neville has the personality to pull it off.

The fact that it WASN'T a happy ending story is what made it interesting.

[1999-01-31-WWF-Halftime Heat] The Rock vs Mankind (Empty Arena)
goc replied to Loss's topic in January 1999
Haven't seen this in a few years but I remember really loving this. Definitely would not mind seeing WWE do another Empty Arena match. Also kind of surprised they never did another Half Time Heat because I seem to remember it doing pretty well in the ratings but I could be wrong. That camera angle for the finish did kind of stink up the end of what was a really good match though.- 11 replies

Now that I have a litle more context to SMW's Fan Weeks I find the idea to be pretty innovative in doing something that appeals directly to the most hardcore of hardcore fans:
-
And you think the crowd wouldn't turn on him in a heartbeat if they thought he was being a diva who refused to lose, was leaving right after Mania, etc.? I'm not understanding your logic. Maybe I'm missing something? My assumption is that if the fans would cheer his opponent, and not expecting to see the title change, would actually pop for it.
-
Changing the topic somewhat, since it's been rumored that Brock is pretty much done with WWE after Mania, if I was in charge I'd be trying to spread rumors that Lesnar was talking about not wanting to lose before going back to MMA and how they were going to have to do some big schmozz finish for the Mania main event. They have to do something to try and keep the crowd for turning him on his match like the one vs. Goldberg.

This prediction of a Roman Reigns backlash is just so weird to me. It's like certain pockets of the internet are just so upset that WWE sees more in Reigns than they do Ambrose that they have just manufactured this whole scenario. Roman Reigns is over. He's not getting negative reactions. Dean Ambrose is not NEARLY as over as Daniel Bryan was going into the Rumble last year so that's another reason it's unlikely to happen. Is Dean Ambrose REALLY a better choice for a Brock Lesnar opponent? Is Ambrose REALLY that much more over than Roman Reigns? I just don't see it outside of a few message boards.

This is one of the better "Dave breaks down terrible angles" moments:

I don't think there is some sinister motive to troll people, swap the word arguments with discussion and it'd essentially mean the same thing.

I don't see how Brisco, Race or Martel are better than say Ricky Morton, Rey Mysterio or Mayumi Ozaki using your criteria for selling. I guess the "out" is that you could also rate all of them at 20. I don't think the idea is that they are the best ever and no one is AS GOOD, just that no one is better. I'm not sure how much I believe in this idea though because someone is always going to come along and argue the numbers. I'm sure that numbers on someone like Lawler would be highly contentious.

I don't know why but I've always been kind of fascinated by former WCW referee Mike Atkins just disappearing without a trace and even Meltzer doesn't seem to realize why he just disappears overnight one day: I also saw on some Deep South Wrestling (Jody Hamilton's Georgia indy from the late 80s) listings that had Mike Atkins as a wrestler and now I kind of really want to track that down.
-
Is Flair really a 20 at selling if he doesn't do long term body part selling? Some people say that shaking off limb work is ok while others hate it so I guess it would still just come down to a matter of taste.
-
Not sure if this is well known or not, but in looking for his 90s work you'll have to start after 1993. I was wondering why he seemed to just drop off of the 80s set and be nowhere in the results for the 92-93 Observers I've read and just came across this bit from the 6/7/93 Observer:
-
And hey since I just came across it here is that disgusting story about Chris Adams ripping out Rod Price's weave:
-
I thought this thread was just designed to create arguments over silly and abritary numbers.

They seemingly never cared about that though, that lasted for years after Doink was out of the WWF. They told indy promoters they couldn't promote Nailz under that name because they were pissed off at him for filing a bullshit lawsuit saying that Vince McMahon sexually assaulted him (and the whole pushing Vince down and choking him thing couldn't have helped) but I suppose that also would have left them open to litigation that they were trying to mess with his career when they didn't do that to other guys.

As far as the "pioneered a dangerous style that was a detriment to wrestling" during the 92-93 time period in the Observer, Meltzer is constantly talking about the escalation of the dangers of wrestling from a lot more than just the FMW craziness. He also talks about the increasingly dangerous dives being done in AAA, bringing up the story of Akira "Tiger" Katayama that I had never even heard of before as a guy who was in a wheelchair and apparently only had control of his tongue due to a missed dive. He talks about Cactus Jack being way too reckless, especially in the 2 big Vader matches where he got concussions in both. He even brings up the All Japan main events as being increasingly hard on the guys and taking the style too far. Dave also makes a strong argument for him that works for this discussion of his place as one of the greatest ever: I haven't seen much of Onita, pretty much just the Memphis tags and the AWESOME tag w/Goto against Masanobu Kurisu & Dragon Master (04/01/90, FMW). I realize FMW got more and more crazy as the 90s rolled on, but I didn't see anything in that tag match that really pushed the hardcore envelope any further than what had already been done in some of the crazier Memphis brawls.
-
So was WWF not really worried about guys using their WWF names after leaving before the mid-90s. I had never really thought about it but reading the Observers from 92-93 the only guy who seems to have issues other than Nailz is Ultimate Warrior. I know for sure Cousin Junior and Uncle Elmer kept those names after leaving WWF. So did Nailz really fuck it up for everyone? And I really wish I could see this:

I don't know if I like THIS idea, but I do love when wrestlers do shit so outside of the norm that they get their own rule named after them. The New Age Outlaws pinning themselves to get out of a 4 way is still memorable to me due to them creating the Outlaws rule after that match that they still referenced for a year or two after.
-
Got NO problems seeing Adrian Neville in that. It didn't stop Super Raton from having insane bloody brawls with dudes dressed like Thundercats.
-
Because you sort of missed the point of what I said. I never suggested plain, vanilla Harry Smith. I suggested some kind of British Bulldogs type of gimmick for them (but not specifically "The New British Bulldogs," as that never works - but rather something in the same spirit) . Something with color and flash, pomp and circumstance. But I'm not hung up on Harry Smith specifically. That was just an example. Primarily, I meant that someone "new and fresh" should be Neville's partner in this scenario - not a stale WWE midcarder like Kofi who has been overexposed for years. You could put Harry Smith in a rainbow outfit and it's not going to do him any good, the guy has no charisma. Kofi is stale but he was still getting reactions before the stupid New Day crap and he has more charisma and ability to connect to the crowd than Harry Smith & Adrian Neville put together. I'm not stuck on Kofi, I'm just saying if the point of putting him in a tag team is to hide his weaknesses you'd want to put him with someone who can engage the crowd.
