Fair for Flair: a mini-series
goc replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in GWE Podcasts and Publications
That's certainly the only explanation I have for that Terry Taylor/Flair match finishing in the top 20. Koko/Flair doesn't stand out in memory to me at all from the Memphis set while the vast majority of the highly ranked Lawler stuff still does. I definitely think there is something to the idea that Flair matches got over rated on the sets released so far, at least their final rankings relative to where I had them on MY ballot. Including Magnum/Flair from AWA. The only Flair match from the Mid-South set that stood out to me as really great was the one with Jake Roberts and that was because it deviated so much from the "Flair formula" and didn't go super long. -
Is Sami Zayn ready to come back yet?
-
Please tell me you're just joking and not actually upset.
-
It's called an oversight

https://www.youtube.com/user/cubanmano2 Mostly matches of The Cuban Assassin (the one that isn't Fidel Sierra) and stuff from Atlantic Grand Prix TV but there are some other cool odds and ends. Also some extremely rare footage like a match from Lou Thesz's UWA promotion and some AIW promotion I've never really heard of which I am guessing was in West Virginia based on it being on WOAY TV 4.

If they wanted me to watch Superstars they should have kept it as the Chris Masters show like it was in 2011. Have barely caught an episode since they released him. I flirted with watching Main Event when Titus O'Neil was getting some time on there but that didn't last long either.

I saw you edited the post but couldn't remember who it was that I took off. I'll put them back.

Motherfucking Kinniku Buster!

I think this is accurate after free agent drops & the ICW trading. The only way I can know for sure though is if you check it. I also added in the numbers of active wrestlers & managers so people can better keep track of how they are in regards to the cap.

Since the issue of guys who we have little footage of has been brought up, I'd like to just mention for the people looking for this to be some kind of "perfect" list or something canonical that's the biggest reason it's not going to be possible. If you feel like you can't rank a guy like Buddy Rogers because he doesn't have enough available footage than how can you really act like the list can accurately depict a true Greatest Wrestler Ever list? A guy like Buddy Rogers had as much influence on wrestling as almost anyone and tons of former wrestlers and fans say he was an all timer but how many ballots are actually going to have him on them? He probably won't even have enough votes to make it on the final list once the votes are tallied.

Then I guess it's up to you if you want to make a new thread and copy over the OP of Grimmas' November topic or just copy it into a new post in the old thread and edit that post as new dates come in.

JYD getting Big Red Reese up for the Thump would have been quite a sight, not sure if he could have managed that honestly. Ernie Ladd vs. Jerry Lawler sounds like a hell of a match, I'd pay money to see that one. JYD & Lawler vs. Ladd & Butch Reed is one hell of a main event for the Mid-South Coliseum, no doubt about it. I'm intrigued to see who JR Foley's team will be although I suspect I know one of the new members is from New Zealand. Don't know how I feel about the possibility of a Lars & Ole Anderson match against the RNRs. Having just watched some of Lars in 1983 from New Zealand's On the Mat he's kind of past his expiration date and Gene was full on expired. I guess Ricky Morton could probably make it work though by creating all the movement and selling big time for them. Ok so is someone actually playing the role of Jose Poffo? I like the joke but it doesn't seem like there is anyone on the Memphis roster who really fits for that role and I'm kind of against the idea of totally making up wrestlers for this project. I'm guessing the two men who ran out to help Superstar share a last name with him but I'll have to wait until next week to find out for sure.

Be careful what you say before someone tries to get that $9.99 from you. Grimmas had the November booking duties and if you want to handle them then precedent would state they are yours. Of course be aware that gobbling up all the freelancers for the month probably won't make you popular (and that the dates already set/requested need to be honored)
-
Yes I'm still going to use him on those dates I'm not going to skip a week in my booking I'm just going to be late in posting. He just won a shot at the Southwest Heavyweight Title for the show on the 30th.

Yea you're really twisting my words here to the point I'm not even sure what posts you're reading so I'm just going to stop even clicking on this thread because wtf.

I didn't say Goldberg stopped caring, I said Goldberg's intense performances were a direct contrast to Sting's totally listless ones. Even Goldberg's short run as a heel which he stated he really didn't want to do showed him putting on good performances. The Duggan match is a great heel performance from a guy who apparently was very unhappy at the time.
-
Nobody has to book any more shows than they want to, I guess other than doing a weekly TV which seems to be the bare minimum that's been set. Seems like trying to do too much is something that has caused people to get burnt out and lose interest so if you want to scale down the IWF from what Grimmas was doing more power to you.
-
But Hogan also put Goldberg over clean as a whistle AND on free TV where even more people would see it than were watching Starrcade 97. Goldberg having a shitty title reign and eventually losing his streak to Kevin Nash was way more about WCW's overall dysfunction than anything that can be laid at Hogan's feet. And Goldberg also looked like he really fucking wanted it and wasn't just out there going through the motions because he was getting paid millions of dollars and didn't feel like getting a new job despite him no longer really being passionate about wrestling.
-
Ok well the last thing I'll say about is just that I buy the story that they could see that Sting wasn't really that invested in being THE MAN in talking to him as thing got close to Starrcade. I think his totally listless performances in 98 bear out that line of thinking. I don't see how him going over clean at Starrcade really would have made him be so much more motivated when he was making the same amount of money anyway due to the way WCW contracts were set up. For whatever you want to say about Hogan he was definitely not dogging it and was putting way more effort into things during that same time frame. Sting looked like a guy who was going through the motions.
-
I don't really know where you are getting point A) from though. You really think that Hogan/Bischoff/Sting sat down in September of 96 and started talking about what they were going to do with Sting after he won the title? No, that supposed meeting he mentions probably happened a few weeks to a month before Starrcade once things were already totally set in motion.
-
Well we'll just have to agree to disagree then because I don't think Sting suddenly taking a HUGE nose dive in the quality of his matches is because his feelings were hurt over not winning the title clean at Starrcade. Dude mentally checked out during his time off and didn't ever really turn it back on in WCW.
-
Bischoff said all that himself on Flair's podcast and I guess you can say he's lying or just trying to cover for Hogan if you want but there's no way they set up the match for that long, almost a year and a half of build up just to run that shitty finish.
-
He was still backstage at the arenas all the time even if he wasn't wrestling. And yes his physique falling off is a clear indicator that he stopped caring.
-
I would say that you are being unfair. The whole reason they switched up the finish at Starrcade 97 is because Bischoff and Hogan both thought "man this guy just doesn't care anymore" and so they didn't want to go all in on making him look like THE MAN~! when he had pretty much checked out.

There's a good chance I will get a week or so behind on my shows as I'm feeling like now would be a good time to take a little break. I've reached kind of the end of "chapter 1" in my plans now with the breakup of The Texas Dynasty (Killer Khan getting rid of the old guard was kind of like the Prologue) and I want to just take some time off of writing my shows (I usually write a little every day) and let myself recharge a bit.
