The best WOS match I have ever seen. Mind you, it is the only WOS match I have seen, but it is like Misawa-Kawada good to me. Do any other WOS matches compete with this one?

I have matches starting from 80 to this year. Practically every major match, although, I hadn't remembered the I Quit cage match. There are other omissions from faulty memory, but 310 matches with a few angles is a heck of a desert island and/or introduction to just about every style/promotion/significant worker there is. Singles, tag, six-man, eight-man, ten-man, ladder, hardcore, lucha, puro, territories, and much, much more. EDIT: At any rate, agree or disagree, I think this might be an interesting list to keep in consideration. Not mine, no, but an overall "desert island" kind of list. Since the GOAT has failed to get off the ground (again), maybe we could concentrate on a project of this magnitude? Obviously, I have no problem compiling a list of 310 matches/angles in an hour. Copy and paste, man, copy and paste. I would just need help with dates, suggestions, omissions, stuff of that nature.

Footage has to exist. I'm not asking about stuff you haven't seen, but matches you think all wrestling fans should see. My bad, man. I was under the influence.
-
I honestly cannot think of a single match that is on tape. I assume you are also asking of stuff that isn't taped? If yes, then probably one of the Holy Grail Ric Flair matches, like his July '82 match against Backlund. I have always felt there would be real moments of hate, stiffness, and overall dickheadness from both guys.
-
I cannot imagine thinking otherwise, honestly. There have been times where angles have supposedly been "unscripted", but that is another thing entirely. I have been curious of this for some time now - since kayfabe is all but dinosaur fuel now, how does the WWE and other American wrestling companies keep things going - meaning angles. Clearly it is not real, is scripted, and no one ever dies at the end. For all of pro wrestling's faults, it is amazing that it has survived this long on an empty tank of reality. I would have thought that most wrestling companies would have gone back to their fundamental basics by now. That being, of course, purely athletic competitions won by out-wrestling one's opponent, but without the hokiest angles to support and now, more often than not, dominate the athletic portion of the match/feud.

That's the "shoot" match?

All Japan: 1-26-92 Tsuruta & Taue vs. Kobashi & Kikuchi 4-18-92 Team Tsuruta vs. Team Misawa (Survivor Tag) 5-22-92 Tsuruta/Taue/Fuchi vs. Misawa/Kawada/Kobashi - Classic. 5-25-92 Can-Am Express vs. Kobashi & Kikuchi - Another classic. This is the match that has the debate of, "It's good because of the crowd noise," right? 6-5-92 Toshiaki Kawada vs. Stan Hansen - One of the fist puro matches I ever saw. 7-5-92 Kobashi & Kikuchi vs. Fuchi & Ogawa 8-22-92 Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Stan Hansen 10-21-92 Toshiaki Kawada vs. Mitsuharu Misawa New Japan: 4-30-92 Jushin Liger vs. El Samurai (TOSJ Finals) 5-17-92 Jushin Liger vs. El Samurai 6-26-92 Kensuke Sasaki vs. Hiroshi Hase 7-31-92 Hashimoto & Hase vs. Sasaki & Fujinami - One of my favorite tag matches from NJ. Falls way behind the Nov '90 match, but all NJ matches afterward do. 8-12-92 Masahiro Chono vs. Rick Rude (G-1 Climax Finals) - This is a match where I am definitely in the minority. It never hit me as it has hit others. There are some other Liger/Samurai matches (4-16 and 10-21) but I can't remember if they are simply good or good/great. Lucha: 4-3-92 Blue Panther vs. Love Machine AAA (Mask vs. Mask) 7-5-92 El Dandy vs. Negro Casas - I only have four lucha matches from 1992, this is one of them. I know this will be on the set, so that is not an issue. The thing is, I don't get this match. I've tried watching it twice; first time it put me to sleep (literally), and the second time House was about to start. Could someone link to a review or add your own thoughts on why this match is so great? WWF: 4-5-92 Bret Hart vs. Roddy Piper (WWF Intercontinental) - One of my favorite matches from either man. Loved the intensity here, and the subtly of regret from Piper. 4-5-92 Randy Savage vs. Ric Flair (WWF World Heavyweight) - Eh. Savage's selling was awesome, but aside from that, not much to talk about from me. 8-29-92 Bret Hart vs. Davey Boy Smith (WWF Intercontinental) - Polarizing match. I am on the side that likes the match. 11-25-92 Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels (WWF World Heavyweight) - I used to love this match. Not so much anymore. WCW: 2-29-92 Jushin Liger vs. Brian Pillman 5-17-92 Sting & Nikita Koloff & Dustin Rhodes & Ricky Steamboat & Barry Windham vs. Arn Anderson & Bobby Eaton & Steve Austin & Larry Zbyszko & Rick Rude (War Games) 6-20-92 Cactus Jack vs. Sting (Falls Count Anywhere) - Haven't seen this in a while, but from memory, it was an enjoyable match. I recently watched their November '91 "hardcore" match and was unimpressed. So maybe this match isn't as good as I remembered... 6-20-92 Rick Rude vs. Ricky Steamboat (30:00 Iron Man) 7-12-92 Sting vs. Vader (WCW World Heavyweight) 9-2-92 Sting, Nikita Koloff & The Steiner Brothers vs. Vader, Super Invader, Jake Roberts & Rick Rude (Elimination Match) - Saw this on a Schneider comp I think. Nonetheless, thought it was fun. 12-28-92 Barry Windham & Brian Pillman vs. Ricky Steamboat & Shane Douglas (WCW Unified World Tag Team) Other American: 7-25-92 Heavenly Bodies vs. Fantastics SMW 8-8-92 Fantastics vs. Heavenly Bodies (Barbed Wire Cage) SMW 11-14-92 Terry Funk vs. Eddie Gilbert WWA - IIRC, there are two matches from two different promotions these two had on this day. I think this is the better of the two. Not sure though. Joshi: 3-17-92 Manami Toyota & Toshiyo Yamada vs. Yumiko Hotta & Suzuka Minami AJW 4-20-92 Manami Toyota & Toshiyo Yamada vs. Aja Kong & Kyoko Inoue AJW (2 out of 3 falls) 4-25-92 Manami Toyota vs. Kyoko Inoue AJW 8-15-92 Manami Toyota vs. Toshiyo Yamada AJW (Hair versus Hair) 11-26-92 Manami Toyota vs. Toshiyo Yamada (2 out of 3 falls) I found these on that website (cagematch.de) I mentioned in some other thread: 11-13-92 Heavenly Bodies vs. Rock & Roll Express (Hospital Elimination) SMW 11-14-92 Heavenly Bodies vs. Rock & Roll Express (Hospital Elimination) SMW 11-26-92 Heavenly Bodies vs. Rock & Roll Express (Falls Count Anywhere) SMW 11-27-92 Heavenly Bodies vs. Rock & Roll Express (Texas Death) SMW 11-28-92 Heavenly Bodies vs. Rock & Roll Express (Street Fight) SMW 11-29-92 Heavenly Bodies vs. Rock & Roll Express (Cage) SMW Question is, do they exist on tape somewhere? I'm sure at least one of them does.

Psicosis and La Parka -
Dust blacked out though. It wasn't counted as a submission or pinfall, but as ref stoppage. But I see your point, as I said "never", which I meant in the sense he never got the desired effect out of the move, i.e, a submission victory.
-
I wonder if RVD was high when he injured Abyss? Bloody?
-
That's what I was thinking too. And here's why: I'd say Kurt did this in the WWF. Far more debatable point. Some say yes, others no. To me, Angle does what he thinks is best, non-stop high risks, suplexes, and almost crippling himself. But he did transition well to Rey Misterio's high flying by being a solid body catcher. When he actually sells, he is good. But it is another thing of when he actually sells. The ankle lock is a cool move, but it has been exposed too many times for it to be a "lethal tap out every time" hold. There are times when he has the hold on that it looks like it wouldn't hurt my 83 year old grandmother who has drop foot. But this is a debatable point as well - I mean, the Von Erich's used a claw hold as their finishing move. No doubt that Kurt has excellent conditioning and stamina. However, I doubt his neck/back/arms could manage a regular schedule of 20 minute matches. The criteria eliminates Steamboat and other workers like Kobashi and Misawa, because they were never heels. Bret and Owen are the only two I can think of right now that cover all five areas undoubtedly. I think Flair is disqualified because of the 4th Angle because the figure four was his "finishing" move but never finished anything for him. Could Flair do as well against lucha opponents as Owen, or even Bret?

Benoit and Angle, man. Benoit and Angle. I disagree with the, "He has no definitive match at all." Sticking to semantics, Benoit's Super J '94 Finals match defined his career. Made WCW and the WWE want him. Inspired younger wrestlers. Needless to say, the '94 J Cup is probably in the top three of all-time bootlegged tapes. Not saying that makes my point, but it doesn't hurt my argument either. Other matches: vs. Ohtani, 3-20-96 w/ Ohtani vs. Eddy & Sasuke, Junior Tag League Finals vs. Angle, Royal Rumble '03 w/ Jericho vs. Austin & Hunter, 5-21-01 vs. Bret Hart, Owen Tribute At any rate, Benoit has more recognizable definitive matches to a larger audience than Lawler, Rhodes, Windham, etc. Lawler's big matches are like Kopi luwak, whereas Benoit's are folgers. I find it doubtful that a wide audience has seen Lawler's Broadway with Race, even though I've uploaded it and spread it across the Internet in comparison to some of Benoit's heralded matches. The same applies to the Loser Leaves Town matches with Dundee. Or the hair vs. hair cage match with Idol. I would rate Benoit below other wrestlers, but he would definitely make my top ten or twenty in terms of workrate. I'm having a hard time envisioning fifty better in-ring workers than Benoit. I'm curious though Dylan, are there any posts like this from you prior to the murders?

Jingus, you just need to realize you are wrong, know nothing about wrestling, and that Dustin Rhodes IS taller than Taker. If you don't acknowledge that, this thread is going to be ten pages long with inane arguing about someone's height in which you will be vigorously insulted. STOP NOW!
-
No he's not, Kane had some ridiculously huge lifts on his boots. Hey, I did say probably! I even had it italicized to illustrate uncertainty. Discussions of height/weight always intrigue me.
-
Were all title matches. I had lost track of that.
-
The only WOS match I have seen was Clive Myers vs. Steve Grey, 11-22-75, and my god was it awesome. My favorite match from the 70s.
-
Dustin Rhodes is taller than Taker, Kane, Sid, Mabel, and Nash? I don't believe that. Dustin is like 6'6, man. Taker is what, 6'8-6'9, same with Sid and Mable. Nash is a good 6'10-11, whereas Kane is probably closer to 7'0. How does that work out exactly? That would mean every wrestler was on the same playing field in terms of popularity.

I was researching title reigns tonight for another board and discovered this: WWE World Heavyweight Wrestlers Reign Date Days held Edge 1 January 8, 2006 21 Edge 3 November 23, 2008 21 Edge 4 January 25, 2009 21 John Cena 4 September 13, 2009 21 Randy Orton 5 October 4, 2009 21 There are two other reigns that lasted 21 days - Koloff and Rock. Cena has a 21 day reign with the other World title too. -
IIRC, I think he blew his knee a month prior at the Four Way PPV.
-
While that is certainly true to non-casual fans, since the wrestling community recycles itself, wrestling promoters are allowed to be lackadaisical in their efforts. Not an excuse to do so, but a reason why they do so. Plus, there is only so much that can be unique in wrestling without being so dangerous, risque, or offensive that it turns people off.
-
A wrestlers gimmick is an afterthought for me. I look at workrate then gimmick. Nevertheless, unless the gimmick is something I find disagreeable/annoying/stupid/Russoism/etc I don't give a shit. Bryan Danielson is my favorite wrestler. Benoit was before him. They are vanilla compared to Flair. Both of them have arguably had just as good or if not better matches. Both will be remembered for their in-ring work, among other things. A great wrestler will be remembered for exactly that: being a great wrestler.
-
I find this somewhat surprising. I would have thought that dishonorable distinction would be levied upon someone like Vince or to a lesser degree, Benoit. Not saying Russo is not on the list, just never thought he would be #1.
