  1. I really liked Wrestlemania 20's main event when it happened but I've really cooled on it since. The last time I watched it I was really taken aback by how much I used to like it. It isn't anything special to me now. I think the emotional payoff when it happened caused a lot of people to seriously overrate it. Eddie & Benoit were my favorite wrestlers when I was a kid so I was in heaven at that time. On the other hand, the "Duggan/Dibiase 1000 gimmicks on a pole match" really impressed me. I thought it was awesome. It had a lot of hype to live up to and it definitely did. You mentioned Tully & Magnum's I Quit match. That's the ultimate answer for me. I've never gotten why it is so highly regarded. It's THE match that I'm the odd man out on.
  2. Shawn Michaels vs Chris Jericho from Wrestlemania 19. I haven't seen it in a few years, but I never thought it was very good. Even back when I was a big fan of both guys I thought it was just OK. I think I'm going to rewatch it this week and see how I feel about it now, but I've seen in a few times and I've never understood the praise it got.
  3. I think everyone in the Super Dome was confused when Lesnar won. The people sitting in front of me got up and walked out when they realized Undertaker had lost. A lot of other people were pissed that it was Lesnar who ended the streak. I would really like to rewatch it on the network because it came off very underwhelming in person.
  4. This will be the first ppv I've ever been to. Is anyone else going to the show?
  5. I went to the DGUSA show last night and I hated it. I enjoyed 2 of the matches (Swan vs Busick, Hero vs Tanaka,) but they were nothing special. It was really cool to see Tanaka because I liked him a lot when I was a kid. The main event wasn't horrible and the Low Ki match was alright but never seemed to really get going. The rest of the show was complete trash. Teddy Hart's run in made no sense. He beat everyone up and after he left the match just went on. Way to put over his importance. The only thing worse than the show itself was the 'smart mark' crowd that kept making annoying douchey comments the whole show.
  6. Not good at all. It seems like they weren't sure what they were doing. The referee had to adjust the rules and stop in the middle of several count outs because a wrestler was obviously not going to make it back in the ring in time. Only about 2 minutes of actual wrestling in between all the crap. That action was good though. Awful match.
  7. All videotape is VHS. That's actually not true. There are all kinds of different videotape formats. VHS stands for Video Home System, so I think you can guess why that's what was distributed to consumers.
  8. This was a good match but I'm not feeling it at all on the same level as everyone else. The bulk of the match is Liger selling while Sano does some moves then Liger does a move and Sano sells while Liger keeps doing moves, switch, repeat, repeat repeat and finish. There's no transitioning, no real sense of struggle to gain the upper hand. It just feels like a "dramatic" superficial exhibition. The selling and the moves only mean anything in and of themselves. There's nothing compelling to tie it all together. It was all just very mechanical.
  9. Billy Joe is as fun in the ring as I hoped he would be. Decent match and a great angle. Having Toni Adams show concern for Chris while Embry was concerned about the match early on set things up perfectly. The execution of everything falling apart was tremendous and felt as organic as possible. I'm much more excited about all this USWA Texas stuff after the early showings than I was with the Moondogs USWA Memphis stuff in 92. That feud had some cool stuff, but Jarrett was grating and it got really repetitive. I can't wait to see more of everyone here, with the exception of Akbar. Side note: Eric Embry throws some really fantastic-looking punches.
  10. Two guys going out and pretending to have a boring fight. What's the point? It was tough following Yamazaki vs Anjoh, but still. The crowd was into it but they probably thought it was real. Least favorite match so far.
  11. What is "feeding?" As in, "He's great at feeding offense to babyfaces."
  12. I'm going to preface this by saying that I'm not a big shoot style fan. Its usually really hit or miss for me. High highs and low lows. Very exciting or really tedious. The 1992 yearbook was my first real exposure to the style, and while I haven't watched all of it, Kiyoshi Tamura vs. Kazuo Yamazaki from 10/23 has been my favorite shoot-style match of 1992 so far. On to 1990. I really liked the first disc. I thought everything on it was pretty good and there were a few matches that I thought were awesome, like Flair vs Eaton & the AJPW tag with Tsuruta & Tenryu, but this was the best match for me. I loved it. I was on the edge of my seat when Anjoh refused to obey the rope break rules as things got heated and Yamazaki went off on him with headbutt after headbutt in retaliation. Great, great match. I'm going to keep an eye out for Yamazaki, but it looks like he has only one other appearance on the set.
  13. First time seeing Billy Joe Travis and I already really like him. I've heard good things but I didn't know what to expect. Seems really funny, great character work and his promo was better than Dundee's, who I also really like. I can see Billy Joe really getting under a crowd's skin.
  14. I'm not sure, but that comment was made during a Muta match when the Dragon Master was on screen.
  15. They really forced that face turn at the very end with the excommunication but no one bought it.

I just watched one promo from his days as Johnny Polo and it's the same thing. He goes out of his way to complicate his promos so that he will sound 'smarter.' He doesn't understand simplicity. Nick Bockwinkel sounded really intelligent in his promos because of the way he talked and the words he used but it came across the right way. He sounded arrogant but it didn't sound like the guy underneath the character had a complex and had to show how smart he was to everyone.

Hum… that was kinda the character, you know. The self-pity party guy who thinks he's saying profound stuff while blabbing pretentious, morose bullshit about himself. Maybe somewhat, but his promos are considered 'good' by a lot of people and they were garbage. I don't buy that it was his gimmick to be a bad talker. Even if it was, his promos I heard it TNA were just as laughable and pretentious. The little bit I've heard of him pre-Raven was on commentary on Coliseum Video and he was awful at that too.

I have to clarify; I don't hate the idea of the character. I hate the performance he gives.
  20. Did the WWF or WCW ever mic or pipe in their audience reactions? Sometimes in the early 90s when business wasn't doing so great, the fans will sound like they're fucking losing it at every single thing that happens.

Hmmm. I hate Raven's character in ECW. I thought he was a horrible, pretentious promo who thought he was being deep and in reality was just being cliche and sounding like a bad community college poet. Everything he said sounded completely unnatural and he used "intelligent" words like it was a big deal. Bray on the other hand sounds much more natural and his character is supposed to be arrogant and kind of delusional. Raven seemed like he thought he was being genius and cutting edge and wasn't. Wyatt isn't either, but he's playing his character really well.

I always thought his character was supposed to be at least partially based on the DeNiro version of Cape Fear, which is certainly not a movie I would call fifth rate or made-for-TV. I'm with Coffey. The character is straight pulp and I love it. Pulp is lowbrow on the surface but the execution doesn't have to be and that's the case here. I love noir/pulp characters like Rev. Harry Powell in Night of the Hunter or Boyd Crowder in Justified and I wouldn't think that it would work in wrestling, but the Wyatt family is pulling it off very well.
