[1993-03-27-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Toshiaki Kawada
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in March 1993
Bombs, escalating hatred between partners and another step for the elbow as the ultimate killswitch in wrestling. Conditioned to domestic wrestling you want some definitive angle splitting this team but perhaps it really was best the way it played out over years without any inciting incident. ****1/4- 15 replies

Who are his investors and what do they believe they're buying?

Can we put Steamboat/Savage and by virtue Mania 3 as one of the more overrated of all time? There's a match that doesn't do much for me.

Great staredown between Tenryu and Fujinami, with Fujinami then laying out Tenryu while he's talking to Choshu. Dropkick and plancha and the building comes unglued. Fujinami & Choshu control early as they work holds at a slower clip than typical for this feud. Even at that slow pace, Choshu & Fujinami are just so great at projecting hate and how important this is. Tenryu always seems able to pull out a desperation enzuigiri to stem NJ's efforts. Tenryu wrenching a half crab on Fujinami and then Ishikawa putting him in dragon sleeper to good heat. You have to love Choshu in tags, working the apron and then coming in with great fury. Here he nails Ishikawa with a a running elbow and 2 backdrop suplexes that set up a lariat for a near fall that Tenryu has to save. Ishikawa eventually pins Fujinami with a running lariat. Too short to be great, but the heat and character work in this feud are top notch, and Ishikawa taking the win is a nice wrinkle. ***3/4

[1993-03-22-WWF-Raw] Michael Landon Awards / Andre the Giant tribute
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in March 1993
Clips of Cindy Crawford, Leslie Neilsen, Hogan, Savage at Landon Awards. More stuff on WWF superstars telling kids not to smoke, do drugs, etc. Closes with a shot of Vince which identifies him as CEO. Then more of Hogan speaking, introducing McMahon for an award from the charity. Extended time for Hogan should've been a sign he was coming back for more than just Mania. Solid speech from Vince. Then we cut to a video announcing Andre for the WWF HOF. Great footage of him with Hogan celebrating title win, on Carson, with Vince, other classic shots. Nice video. -
[1993-03-21-NJPW-Hyper Battle] Jushin Liger vs Dean Malenko
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in March 1993
Man was this ever underwhelming. Lots of trading moves and clumsy countering by Malenko. Just feels like they'll hit a spot then pause and regroup for the next one. Even Liger seems less engaged than usual as I can't pin this all on Malenko. Liger catches Malenko coming out of the corner in a frankensteiner for the pin out of nowhere. On to the next one. **1/2 -
[1993-03-20-SMW-TV] Interview: Arn Anderson & Rock & Roll Express
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in March 1993
Anderson says he's dirty and capable of doing to the Bodies just what Sullivan did to the Japanese kid. Typically great promo from one of the best. -
[1993-03-20-SMW-TV] Kevin Sullivan vs Yukihiro Kanemura
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in March 1993
One of the few SMW angles I vividly remember hearing about back in the day. Sullivan attacks when Caudle is attempting a pre-match interview. Kanemura is busted open right away and we've got blood splashing on fans as he has a gross cut above his eye. Loved the visual of disgust on a mother's face as her young kids look on from point blank range. Disgusted or not, that family isn't going anywhere. Sullivan is just ripping at Kanemura's face. Kanemura surprisingly gets a little comeback with kicks and chops, which ends when Sullivan spikes his arm out of nowhere. Digging the spike into his arm while TV censors it. Nighstalker prevents anyone from saving until Brian Lee is in and bails out Kanemura. Sick, sick angle. And AWESOME.- 16 replies

Looking back on all the praise for this I may need to give it a rewatch. Solid mat work and countering as they work holds early. The execution and grace was there which wasn't a surprise given who was involved, but I didn't see much here that grabbed my attention. That may be on me, as more often than not I don't seem to rank a lot of lucha outside of some brawls as highly as others. Not sure I can quite quite pinpoint why, but it usually feels a lot more like an exhibition and fit the profile of working light. Maybe the light bulb just hasn't gone off yet. Back to the match, as none of that is to say I didn't like this, but rather that it just didn't resonate as anything much better than good. I liked Casas working in a comedy spot taking a spill climbing the ropes and doing so without rendering the whole thing a joke, just a brief, isolated moment. ***1/4

We jump to Vader missing a Vader bomb. Sting with one of his cool Koppo kicks, then DDT and top rope DDT. Vader goes up for a release German and near fall that sees Race get involved, which looked like a chore for him. Stinger splash, ref bump, missed Stinger splash, Race interferes and Vader wins with a power bomb. Looked good from the finish. I'd forgotten they did this back & forth deal on the tour.

[1993-03-16-Michinoku Pro] Great Sasuke & Gran Hamada vs El Signo & El Rudo
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in March 1993
Lucharesu! Made up words! Hamada's headbutts are pretty cool. He moves so well and would continue to do so for years. Sasuke with an Asai moonsault, which gives Hamada time to work some nice pinfall combos inside. Then Sasuke with a sick dive off the top. This isn't great but its very fun, which is good enough. Seems to be a DQ right after the dive? Post-match beatdown that looks like its taking out Taka Michinoku. **3/4- 7 replies

Shrinkers throw some nice superkicks. Its a fun flashback to see these acts do their thing, which is one of the real joys of the yearbooks. Match isn't anything so great, but the crowd seems pretty hot for it. Both Shrinkers, especially Fatu, are bumping well. Then it becomes a 1993 WWF version of the Memphis concession stand brawl and a double countout. Okay for what it was. Lots of condiment action.

[1993-03-13-USA Wrestling] Interview: Junkyard Dog
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in March 1993
JYD delivers a promo about Zhukov while in a neckbrace. -
How is Banks on the mic? She looks great in the ring, but between her size, athleticism and looks, on top of work, it doesn't at all strike me as a stretch to imagine her being a focal point of the division.

Always love reading your recaps. Been avoiding much of the thoughts on specific matches and angles since I'm going to '95 when I eventually get through '94, but its always fun to compare my thoughts with yours and others when going through it.

Misawa definitely turns to slow, methodical starts. Perhaps I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt, but I find this appropriate and often compelling given how strongly he was established as the top dog in All Japan. He defeats Jumbo and eventually takes the title from Hansen, after which his elbow is arguably the most protected move in the business. Not always as a finisher like the Rainmaker, but its the all time equalizer. He breaks that out and down goes the opponent. As he vanquishes foe after foe, and is able to turn the tide against anyone with that elbow, it becomes incumbent on the challenger to overcome him. This allows him to very often let the match come to him and pick his spots. At least when I'm watching, the anticipation really builds waiting to see what his opponent brings and when/how he'll turn it on. Take a look at the Akiyama matches in 2000 AJ and 2001 NOAH . Watching the 2001 match last night was the earliest Misawa has looked like a grizzled old vet, almost Tenryu-like. The athleticism isn't there but he almost does a Tenryu impersonation but with his own offense, centered around the elbows, of fighting off the rising star who overcame him the year before. Loved it.

Rey with some nice spots outside with Heavy Metal in the first fall, which the heels win with Psicosis & Parka taking falls. Parka catches Rey on a dive, but misses charging at him in the corner and goes to the floor. Volador sends Psicosis to the floor but no follow up dive as heels regroup. Misterioso & Volador with tandem tope suicidas on Parka & Psicosis. This allows Misterio to pin Heavy Metal with a rana off the ropes for 2nd fall. Cool spot with Parka throwing Misterio onto Psicosis's knee. Parka with a nice throw of Misterio onto the mat out of the corner with Heavy dropping an elbow in a cool spot. Rey killing it in the hot pink tights. Parka loses his mask at one point. A ton slimmer than today, but I enjoy the LA Park of recent vintage a hell of a lot more. Parka with an awesome flipping tope through the ropes. Psicosis pins Misterioso with a splash off the top for the win. Parka dancing with a ring girl between falls is great. This was fun but way too long, as is usually the case here. ***1/2

Super heated. Even the WAR crowd seems to be behind Hashimoto. Hash's kicks on Hara while he has Ohara in a crab are awesome. Hash is the ultimate tough guy. Is there any sense of how instrumental this feud was to his rise as a star? Hara is an ultra all time tough guy. Why does it seem like you don't hear much from him after NJPW vs. WAR. Ohara's face bloodied. Hash breaks up a Fuyuki near fall off of a lariat. Hara with another, awesomely impactful lariat that Hash breaks up. Crowd seems to really be behind Ohara but was still hot for WAR's near falls. Hash breaks up another near fall for Fuyuki off of a backdrop suplex. Ohara finally hot tags Hash after he's been out for a while, and he brings the ruckus to Hara before finishing him with a high kick. I also love that Hash can finish a match in so many ways. Mr. Hashimoto graces us the WAR crew with some choice words on the mic afterwards before heading out. I could watch this feud forever. ***3/4

[1993-03-07-WAR] Koki Kitahara vs Kuniaki Kobayashi
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in March 1993
Kitahara goes after Kobayashi as he walks to the ring. Nice! Trading slaps, chops and spitting at each other! Kitahara misses pretty blatantly with a kick that Kobayashi sells as a KO. Crowd seemed oblivious but that was bad. More brawling outside, stiff kicks and Kobayashi with a chair shot. Kobayashi eats another big kick, but back with fisherman suplex for near fall before Kitahara is on top again. Kikahara back with a kick to the head of a kneeling Kobayashi, then a couple stomps and a punt, and ref declares it a knockout. Kitahara attacks again after the match, then gets on the mic and into it with someone else from NJ, and its awesome. These were some violent junior heavies, and heated in a very different way than Dragon/Samurai. Best. Feud. Ever. ***1/2 -
Really terrific video quality for a handheld. Love the heat and clear heel/face structure this takes on a WAR show. Samurai with some nice, stiff kicks and elbows, then a jumping tombstone for a near fall. He works for an extended body sleeper as he goes for a submission. We then move into the flying part of the match and this does not disappoint. Dragon really does contort himself pretty spectacularly on his Asai moonsault. Great, quick countering and pinning attempts down the stretch. Everything is so fast and smooth which requires such a high skill level. Dragon takes it on yet another nice reverse while Samurai refuses to shake hands afterwards. I love that even on the junior heavyweight level WAR/NJPW is heated and doesn't disappoint. ****

[1993-03-06-USA Wrestling] Junkyard Dog and Boris Zhukov
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in March 1993
Clips from last week of JYD at a boys club, then in studio to get an award, then the finish of a JYD squash and being attacked by Zhukov afterwards. Zhukov delivers a completely unintelligble promo. -
[1993-03-06-SMW-TV] Tracy Smothers vs Dirty White Boy
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in March 1993
Now this is punching and brawling I can get behind. Dirty White Boy is busted open and bleeds a lot. Smothers got a hell of an offensive run to start this one out until missing a dive which opens things up for White Boy to bloody him up. Just love the sight of these two bloodied and throwing punches and bombs at each other. It doesn't produce a classic or anything, but this is hot and at the high end of what they're going for. This feels like a great way to jumpstart and build a feud coming off of what feels like a non-finish waiting to happen. After Smothers hits a superkick and jawjacker, White Boy distracts the ref which lets Ron Wright get out of his chair for the first time and KO Smother. AWESOME ***1/2- 12 replies

Still 5-6 weeks or so until the Rumble, but after last night I think its possible Cena wins at the Rumble. I think this would make for a much better Mania at this point, which certainly isn't something I imagined saying a while back. Still too late to heat Reigns up to that level, but him vs. Cena I think makes for a more interesting card, and lets you do do Lesnar/Taker again (just don't see him being paired with Bryan, who we don't yet know if he'll be back at all, unless Taker is truly out) along with HHH/Sting. If somehow Bryan is healthy and and the Bray/Taker rumors are legit, that would open up that match up as well. Just a lot more options with no Lesnar/Reigns on the books.

I think it definitely mattered from inception with the Owen/Davey final. As noted above it legit headlined and sold a PPV. Sure it was a European show, but it was integral to the promotion of that show. It also probably officially died as anything that mattered shortly thereafter where it was handed over to HHH.
