  1. Pretty incredible debut, with Kobashi giving Akiyama many opportunities to look good on the mat and with counters while still staying on top. Akiyama to shows good fire in his comebacks, arguably more than he'd do at times as a vet. A kickout from Kobashi's backdrop suplex brings the crowd behind him and his big spot is a counter into a German. Hell of a story and performance here. ***1/4
  2. Flair doing his character work in Japan is great, yelling at the ref and crowd and generally heeling it up. The first fall is worked slowly, but stiffly, as they're clearly going long. They are both really laying in the chops. Flair goes for kneebreaker but Tenryu counters, hits the enzuigiri & power bomb for the first fall. Flair goes to work on the knee in the second fall with his trademark spots -- throwing the shoulder at it, the sit down on the ropes, snapping it and winning when Tenryu's shoulders are counted down after a long figure four. Tenryu counters a figure four in the 3rd fall as the crowd gets into Tenryu's near falls before the disappointing but predictable finish. Nevermind that the match was great, but it really looked like Flair loved the chance to put on another NWA world title match. ****
  3. Had no idea this was the case and definitely gives some perspective. Loved the early spot with Kyoko avoiding an attack before the sprites all back away from Bull. The monsters dominate the first fall early with power and great teamwork. Bull misses a legdrop on Yamada but no sells a triple dropkick. Yamada wraps her up in a small package for the first fall. Kong dominates Hotta with kicks and a Uraken in the second fall, which Kyoko takes quickly with a running Tenryu elbow off the top. Yamada grounds Kong in the 3rd and works her leg for a while. They brawl outside for a bit and we get some quality violence from Bull on Yoshida. A Kong splash & Nakano legdrop on Hotta get 2 before a save, but another legdrop gets the pin. Hokuto out afterwards to present flowers to Bull. Enjoyable, but far from elite match. Still loving all the joshi on here. ***3/4
  4. What about the Summerslam main event where Angle was knocked loopy and had to leave for a solid chunk of the match?
  5. Bret talks about the loss at Summerslam and a curse from Papa Shango. Like most others here, I did not recall any Hart/Shango program.
  6. The early portion was fun to see as Kobashi holds his own with the MVC for a while. Gordy & Williams as a team really haven't impressed me in Japan. They're pretty slow and plodding, just pounding on the natives and somewhat serving as a base for their offense to revolve around. Williams kicks out of a tiger driver for big near fall. Kobashi gets to kick out of a top rope northern lights suplex for a big pop before eating another northern lights and the stampede. Is this as "bad" a tag as Misawa & Kobashi can have? ***1/4
  7. Classic bad video. Much campier than anything in WWF. We've got midgets, Hannibal mask, and Madusa in a trashy outfit with Jake watching on in a biker bar. Sting shows up and everyone freaks out. Jake tries to make this great but he's surrounded by awful. Sting sounds like he's struggling to remember his lines. I remember being so psyched for this gimmick, then having no objections my parents didn't let me order it when I heard what the wheel landed on, which of course is not one of the options Jake mentions here.
  8. Fantastics talk about the Bodies winning the belts and set up a rematch where Cornette is handcuffed to Bob Armstrong. Pritchard says just like seafood, they have their women flown in. Cornette also redirects them to the RNR program for a match the following week to establish that as the next feud. Good stuff here.
  9. Gilbert back out with PWI showing he's ranked #5 behind Savage, Vader, Rude and Hart, and he points out he's ahead of Flair, Sting and Hogan. Not bad. Doug Gilbert is out and interfering early. Lawler there for the save before out for the save. Reno Riggins & Mike Samples also get involved.
  10. Landel & Rich give promos for their match with Dundee & JYD. Rich's was awesome.
  11. Ramon promo after the title switch has aired, with Perfect pouring champagne like a well coiffed gopher and Flair on fire. Heenan is there for the party as well. I forgot how well they established Ramon at the top right away before he had any major matches.
  12. Taue dominaties early sending Kawada to floor and piledriving him on a table, and he's relentless in controlling the action. Taue again worked great as a heel here, kicking Kawada in the head while he's down. Kawada eventually turns things around and forces Taue to work out of a tight headlock after Taue had him in the same spot earlier. Kawada hits a lariat for a hot near fall before Taue lands a big slap that looks to set up the finish as Kawada kicks out of one nodowa, gets a foot on the rope on the second and twice blocks a third attempt before going to the submissions with a Misawa facelock, stretch plum and another stretch plum for the win. Great finishing stretch. ***3/4
  13. Maybe we can wait a little on the RNR. Lots of stalling by the heels early before the match begins - over 8 minutes before they lock up. This feels like a house show match not designed for mass consumption. I wasn't in the house, so I didn't really love this even though the crowd seems crazed for everything. **1/2
  14. I didn't love the first match, but this was great. Dustin attacks Cactus in the aisle and we're off to the races. Cactus hits his sunset flip to the floor and at least comes down on mat, then a suplex on the stage as he's not sparing himself at all. Dustin brutalizes Cactus with a chair before Cactus hits his elbow to the floor for the win. Hell of a performance by Cactus and Dustin was game for the brawl as well. I preferred this to the Sting match at Beach Blast. ***1/2
  15. Razor promo targeting Savage. He definitely feels like a hot, fresh character.
  16. Dutch interviews Cornette & Bodies. Cornette gives a great promo about providing first aid for the Fantastics.
  17. Even without looking back to confirm, I'm pretty comfortable calling this the best SMW match on the set yet. Good use of the stip by the Bodies to differentiate this from your standard tag. On the other side of the coin, it was odd seeing the rep not letting Bobby Fulton in without a clean tag. The finishing sequence with the ref bump, face near falls and climax was well laid out and told a great story. Let's get to the RNR already. ***1/2
  18. Cornette brings out $20K in cash out to put on the line in a tag title match vs. the Fantastics.
  19. Lawler & Jarrett bring in Ms. Texas to counter Lauren Davenport in the Gilberts' corner.
  20. Rich is out for a promo and Landell calls in to set up a tag vs. Dundee & JYD.
  21. Buddy Landell jumps in for a 2 on 1 attack on Dundee and non-finish. Its a shame we don't have the footage to swap in a lot of MSC matches for studio segments.
  22. This was good. The work was solid throughout as both excel on the mat and this in particular featured some excellent transitions, as well as a neat finish to the first fall. Something was definitely lost in translation on the finish in the third as I didn't really pick up on the controversy until reading about it here and even upon a rewatch it wasn't that obvious to me. This was missing some of the ups & downs in flow and storyline that I look for as it felt more like a well done by the book routine. ***
  23. Truth. It was the Kahwi Leonard of the night. Or at the Kahwi before Parker got hurt, at which point this would be the Tony Parker of the night.
  24. I might normally say the same thing if I hadn't watched the match. But this was very good, and I'm not someone in any way in love with Del Rio. It was a well laid out and executed world title match and better than the #3 match on most great shows. You should really watch it before knocking it for not carrying its weight.
