  2. I'm already pretty comfortable calling it the best Summerslam ever. Which year had 2 matches on par with Lesnar/Punk and Cena/Bryan? As far as where it ranks with other PPVs, you've got Canadian Stampede, one or MITB shows, and a few manias which are stacked and as our legit super bowl are tough to knock off the top. If you want to talk about deeper shows, those are out there. But I'd always prefer that the top 2 or 3 big matches are blowaways rather than solid up and down the card with nothing memorable on top.
  3. I'm all for Taue as Pippin and ashamed for not looking at it that way myself initially. I was thinking some may want to put him in the range of a Tony Parker but I like your idea much better.
  4. I now love that line 1000 times more than I originally did. And I loved it last night.
  5. Love this topic. Vader strikes me as an ideal candidate for tier 2 or 3. Similar to Dylan's point above about Cena, what do people think about Austin? Clearly doesn't have the longevity on top but he was a part of some classics and pretty consistent throughout his run on top. What about Taue? On the one hand it seems silly to mention him here. On the other, he was a big enough part of enough great matches that you can't just say he was along for the ride. But I'm not sure if he makes a 3rd/4th tier or is more of an honorable mention type candidate. I know I'm in the distinct minority here, but I've never seen the consensus on Lawler & Tenryu. Lawler's always been a hell of a one trick pony to me, and while he's responsible for a great number of rides, they don't rank with anyone else on this list. On the other hand I love a ton of Tenryu's work, but outside of a few gems he's someone who's never let me down but also never really consistently taken things to that next level. I'd be interested to compare him with Taue at some point.
  6. Flair takes a few decent bumps for Taker, who basically no sells the whole way and does little on offense other than a couple power spots. Taker comes back from the dead during a figure four prompting Perfect's interference for the DQ. Nothing special here. **1/2
  7. Weird that Vader is the 3rd heel introduced. Vader & Rude looked really good here, and Jake absolutely felt like a legit main eventer. I didn't love much we got from the faces here. Fortunately Nikita & Herc are gone pretty quickly. Vader bumped like hell for Rick, though you probably don't want your monster #1 heel getting thrown around like that, even if he looks great doing it. Rick of course then returns the favor by not going up for a chokeslam. Then we get three garbage eliminations of the Steiners and Vader, who should be there at the end. At least Jake got to stand tall. Pretty awful booking but Vader and a good finish saved it. ***
  8. Another great video with awesome clips of Simmons at FSU, with Bobby Bowden and having his number retired. Its mixed in with clips of him in the ring, including winning the title from Vader. Pretty great production here, which was never WCW's calling card.
  9. Now this is a package. Clips of Dusty, Hansen, Ron Garvin, Tony Atlas, Magnum, Buzz Sawyer, Mr. Wrestling 2, Kabuki, Dibiase, Watts, Wahoo, Masked Superstar, Jimmy Valiant, Bundy, The Spoiler, Iron Sheik, Blanchard, Flair, Funk, Rich and Piper. I could watch 3 hours of just this.
  10. Armstrong can't defend his title due to injury, and Pillman is out to go heel because he wanted his title match. Its a pretty good heel promo followed by a nice slap, but not exactly an impactful turn.
  11. Bruno looks a bit like Brando. Says WWF has been an embarassment and that he'll be at Havoc. Because Spin the Wheel, Make the Deal is how he and Watts did it back in the day. Clip of Andre, dressed for the Princess Bride, then Teddy Long interviews Bob Armstrong, Thunderbolt Patterson. I've never been a fan of Bruno on the mic -- either on TV or in an interview/podcast setting and this is no different.
  12. Clips of Ole Anderson turning on Dusty vs. Russians with Solie & Ole on commentary, which I remember having an mp3 of. Then clips of the Brisco Bros TV debut, Freebirds, Road Warriors, Rock & Roll Express. Watching this as a kid I was in awe of seeing a ton of teams and highlights of guys I'd only heard and read about. Still fun to see these now.
  13. Who is in the black tie crowd here? Austin goes to work on Steamboat's ribs and does a great job as the aggressor. Its been said before, but the improvement in his work is noticeable over the course of the year. Steamboat with a great counter when Austin puts his head down for a backdrop. We get multiple reversals on a tombstone in a standard WCW spot before Steamboat hits it but is slow to cover. Good finish with Steamboat skinningthe cat, Austin sending him out again and paying for it. Pretty heated down the stretch. ***3/4
  14. This feels completely heatless, even for Japan shoot standards. Takahashi eats a ton of knockdowns on solid strikes by Vale, before hulking up and being knocked down for good. Perhaps this worked in the context of big picture booking, but I found it pretty weak compared with the other action from PWFG & UWFI on the yearbook. **1/2
  15. I may be extending this extra credit from Summerslam because of the incredible job Savage did selling the knee injury, but I enjoyed this as a follow up. Savage starts limping to the ring just like the HBK match that followed Mania, and that's where the focus is as Vince strongly pushes Flair's attack on the knee. Savage exacerbates it taking a bump to the floor before Razor gets in his shots at it as well. I could've done with a whole lot less from Perfect here as his interference didn't add anything. Title changes hands after an incredibly long figure four. This should've been a hot finish but it felt like something was missing. I liked the post-match with Ramon again attacking Savage's and Warrior to help him to the back. Savage's selling absolutely made this. ***1/4
  16. While the Mania title picture may not be set in stone, I'd bet its been sketched out.
  17. Loss, very interesting to see your thoughts on this as I expected the PWO consensus to be in some kind of uproar over the close. I didn't love the execution / production as I thought there needed a moment or two that invited the crowd to really get behind and pop for Bryan. Whether it be a dramatic entrance with the music or some kind of attack laying people out before being overcome by numbers, I would've liked that pop. That being said, we're on night two of what looks like a months long storyline, and while down the road we can argue about the twists and turns and where it leads, the undeniable fact is that the past 2 nights DB has been positioned as the ace babyface in the WWE. All the comments from the McMahon's, including Steph's great B+ line are designed to put this guy over as the best thing going today. Count me in until he drops the ball or they take it away from him without giving him a fair chance.
  18. Absolutely. Without the celebration, confetti, and thanks to mom & dad in the camera its impact is not at all the same.
  19. That finish was perfect. The money's in the chase and you've now got Bryan in the role of #1 babyface chasing the belt. A clean win closing the show would've been that indelible moment, but then what? For tonight, this is exactly where things should be. Don't know how much confidence I've got in this 3 or 6 months from now, but for tonight this was great. And that slapfest? Somebody love them some SUZUKI MINORU.
  20. I'm not going to lie, they had me with the confetti. Then HHH hung around a little too long and you knew what was coming.
  21. Cena consulting the ringside doctor early on. Payoff later?
  22. Bryan looks so incredibly grateful and almost disbelieving that he's out there headlining a major PPV. Hard not to be happy for him. Probably reading too much into his facials, but fingers crossed it portends a great night.
  23. Wow was that incredible. So much to *love* here. Punk's early knee strikes to bring down the bigger man. Brock working like the absolute perfect monster heel, never even going down from simple offense but requiring a crushing series of blows, or as the match went on, something super high impact to go down. Punk getting tossed around the way David needs to when Goliath throws him like a rag doll. The awesome sequence on the mat working the submissions. Lesnar selling the anaconda vice, and especially triangle, so damn well that I actually bought he'd tap. Near falls you bought as a finish, especially after Heyman's initial interference. Brock Lesnar is the best character in wrestling today. Easily my US MOTY, and a strong contender for worldwide as well. EDIT: Thanks to those who remembered the three amigos spot. That match did the damn thing. About the only flaw I can really pick at is Heyman playing so strongly into the finish, but at least it played into Punk going down. Sticking with Punk post-match and showing him recover, get to his feet and leave chin up was a great bit as well for him going forward.
  24. So what babyface are all these Ryback catering vignettes supposed to lead to?
  25. Natalya won. I like her. But I used this time to go say to the wife and have some ice cream. Sorry girls.
