  1. I'm not sure why Val being the babyface in this is so surprising - a face cuckolding a heel has frequently been treated with sympathy (see Dusty-Baby Doll-Tully, Hogan-Liz-Savage). Is it a great angle? No, but Val isn't unique.
  2. We're pretty far afield from this building up a wrestling match, but Hales is really coming into his own as a personality.
  3. Hadn't seen that in a long time and wow - Flair is just on fire here. The pop is electric in a way that you do rarely see now (although I do think the Bryan and Punk moments are in the same league, even if they don't match it).
  4. This was pretty gross (and I don't just mean the fake puke) - especially given the direction Hall's life took.
  5. Prostate cancer is frequently pretty treatable - hopefully that's the case for the Hitman. Wishing him the best.
  6. Entertaining dog and pony show, but not really on the level of the classic Raven's Nest dog and pony shows in ECW.
  7. The visual with the smoke was very well done here. It's interesting to contrast this stuff with the Arn stuff, though. The Arn stuff works because it's about a person, and real human emotion. The Warrior stuff focuses on the supernatural, and I frankly can't imagine who would be engaged by both of these angles. Big tent theory, I guess, but it makes it feel like the promotion is a bit schizophrenic.
  8. I dug this, although it didn't leave me feeling particularly excited to see Snow wrestle.
  9. Tammy looks great here and vital to the match which makes her last decade so, so sad. I enjoyed this as a match, although it doesn't add up to a ton and the finish is absolutely dumb.
  10. Was there any doubt at all that Stevie Ray was in there to take the fall at War Games?
  11. Yeah, this was not great given the build.
  12. The interesting question left open here (and I think it's beyond the scope of the piece to answer) is - if Vince hasn't truly gotten behind Reigns, doesn't see him as the future - why is everything pointing to him main eventing Wrestlemania for the second year in a row? Is Vince using Reigns as a placeholder until he figures out his next move?
  13. This is how I usually think of this block. You can also call the first two "Hulkamania rise and peak" and "Hulkamania decline and fall." There's also a break somewhere around '90 in terms of the wrestling style. Up through '89 you really have the influence of a variety of styles that guys came in having developed in the territory system. In '90, you really have the business hardening into a Big 2, so there's less movement in the roster, the style is more homogenized, you don't have places for guys to go away and get fresh... it just feels like a different product.
  14. I think this hits at a larger problem - what is Roman Reigns' character? Who is he as a person? I mostly watch the PPVs, so maybe I've missed some development there, but he just seems like a big dude who does a few high impact moves. I'm not sure what emotional resonance he has, whereas the guys described above worked, to varying degrees, because people felt something for them.
  15. Midnight Express squashes are fantastic for the variety of offense and Cornette ranting on commentary.
  16. They seem to be doing another Nitro dump - they are up to July '99 and have filled in a bunch of gaps in '98 and '99.
  17. That's exactly how \i feel And people believe in that potential because they have had some amazing couple month stretches at times over the last 5 years - Summer of Punk, Bryan's ascension - such that if Vince and the fans lined up for an extended period of time, there's a lot of fun that could be had in watching the product.
  18. Considering Jericho's night at Vengeance in 2001 has been a talking point about him for close to 15 years now, yeah, absolutely agree that giving Ambrose a big night would be huge for him.
  19. The idea that not only do faces and heels ride together, but that the promotion would show it, is probably enough to make Bill Watts keel over. Nobody tell him. Very intrigued to watch, have enjoyed it when they did versions of Ride Along on Total Divas - seems like obvious material.
  20. This looks like a really bleh card other than the intrigue around how they book the Rumble.
  21. Chastity and Beulah from ECW, both before the business. The Beulah one was pretty well traded back in the day.
  22. Related - does anyone have a suggestion for following the product other than watching 3 hours of Raw? Is Superstars a decent recap show with matches that have non-terrible announcers? Is the "This Week in WWE" thing on the Network any good?
  23. Generally true (and I was an extemporaneous speaker myself). But if someone can plan something and anticipate how it would be received and properly play those reactions, I'm not sure it should be looked at any less. Steamboat-Savage was of course famously planned meticulously, but the fans responded, and that's what matters.
  24. Seeing as how this is basically the way I listen to Tag Teams Back Again (with the matches on while the podcast plays), this sounds awesome.
