  1. The commentary was pretty bad. Daniel Bryan finally gets tagged into the match after a long beatdown session on the Usos. Cole and JBL are speaking with no excitement at all as DB is flying all over the place. There is a long period of silence during the climax of the match. The match was fine for a Smackdown main event. There seems to be a disparity in the numbers of faces vs heels in this Authority feud. We need another heel to even things out a bit.
  2. Barrett tries to have some decorum but gets attacked by Kofi. He flattens Kofi with a punch than says he has some Bad News before beginning the beatdown. I always love a good "out of nowhere" finisher like Barret's elbow here. I'm looking forward to see how far he can take this gimmick.
  3. I watched PPVs from the 80s so many times that ended with Hogan doing his pose routine, this had to be a pretty cool moment for Bryan to join in with him.
  4. Bo steals a quote from Michael Scott and tells everyone to Bo-lieve in themselves.
  5. This was a logical match coming out of the Wrestlemania Battle Royal. I liked Cesaro taking advice from Heyman and changing up his strategy to wear Big Show down. Big Show going for, and missing, an elbow off the second rope was pretty impressive. That is not something a guy his size and age needs to be doing, especially on a random Smackdown midcard match. Swagger interfered for the DQ finish, but Cesaro still gets a visual victory on Big Show by hitting a Neutralizer. DQ finishes are never satisfying but I enjoyed this enough. I could see a three way match coming out of this.
  6. I kind of like Cena as company hype-man, him talking about incoming guys like Bo Dallas and Adam Rose helps to elevate them and add to the excitement. He then turns into Serious Cena and says he is the "Measuring Stick" in the WWE. The Wyatts appear and Bray asks why is he smiling if he lost at Wrestlemania. He's almost joyous, saying he almost brought out the Monster in Cena. Cena's face when he watches a guy on the screen always makes me laugh.
  7. My expectations were somewhat high after watching the Kanemura x Yamakawa match that preceded this. The crowd was nowhere near as hot (There is a somewhat notorious fire incident in the match preceding this that probably caused this). I thought it was weird to have a title match with ladders all over the place but it not be an actual ladder match. There was more wrestling than I expected and some of the spots were cool, especially the two at the end. Overall, this didn't do much for me.
  8. I got some PWG in Reseda vibes from this crowd. It felt like a party that had some wrestling there. Someone else compared it to ECW, which feels right as it was less a pro wrestling match and more a brawl with some pro wrestling rules. But it was different enough, with some crazy spots, two real characters, and a wild crowd. I knew I was in for something special when Kanemura comes out and does a choreographed dance to "Come Out And Play" by The Offspring. Then the match started and he immediately hits a Van Daminator. Later, he does this wacky butt-drop senton to the outside that I rewatched probably 15 times. Dude was just always up to something. Yamakawa is a big dude, took some insane punishment, and looked pretty good during the finish. When I saw "Tables, Light Tubes, and Chairs Match", this isn't what I expected, it was so much more fun than that.
  9. In 2002, I was a senior in high school and way more interested in punk rock than I was wrestling. I wish I could go back and show myself this, I would have been blown away. 21 years later, this is still a fantastic three way. There was a "standing room only" feel with the crowd standing along the walls and even into the hallway that made this feel like a must-watch match. Danielson came out to The Offspring, making me a fan immediately. Unless I'm mistaken, none of the guys even leave the ring, everyone stayed involved throughout the match. I can't speak for how well known any of these guys were in Philadelphia at the time, but they did great in showcasing what they had to offer. Low Ki had some brutal strikes, Danielson some crazy submissions. Daniels got beat up a lot and became the first heel in ROH post match by refusing a handshake. Going in to the second show, you had three stars with well defined characters. I really enjoyed the commentary. I get frustrated with some indie shows where the commentary does very little to explain why a match is important. They just name moves. This match didn't have that.
  10. This was fascinating. I always love the glimpses they give backstage, its just so different from watching their usual programming. Nice to see how they acknowledged all the talking points about Bryan recently, from getting fired over the tie incident, to losing in 18 seconds, to the fans booing Rey Misterio. Those were big internet talking points, its nice to see guys in the company acknowledge that they were real issues behind the scenes and not just online. There was one scene where Bryan was being interviewed before WM27 where he was talking about being on the show. That couldn't have been intended for anything specific at the time, but they had it available three years later. It made we wonder how many thousands of hours of footage they have of stuff like that that has never been seen, and will probably never be seen. The beauty of the network makes it a possibility.
  11. It was obvious this was going to a draw based on how slow they continued to work after the 5 minute call. It was fine, I don't feel like I missed much.
  12. There has been some talk about Steamboat using Richie to get the jump on Rude. Why was Rude so close to them to begin with? He was right in front of them, looking very intimidating. Steamboat notices, get angry, get Richie out of there, and attacks. I feel like some may have fallen for Ventura's commentary. The match itself was excellent. Rude and Steamboat are two of the best ever at selling, the offense was interesting and made sense. Great storyline, which was helped a lot by J.R. and Ventura. The superplex here is probably the most perfectly executed superplex I've seen. I loved the final 45 seconds. I felt like Rude would have gotten a three count if he had hit something more high impact, but he was in such a panic mode that all he could do was attack with a clothesline and shoulderblocks while Ventura was screaming for the Rude Awakening.
  13. I really liked this. Falls Count Anywhere stips typically result in guys going all over the arena. Here, they kept it at ringside and just brutalized each other. Sting showed a lot of toughness here, he was flying all over the place and taking a few rough bumps. Cactus splattered himself on the concrete a few times. At one point, he climbed to the second turnbuckle and hurled himself towards Sting on the outside. It wound up looking relatively safe, for his standards at least. Feel I have to mention Bill Alfonso, who was especially pumped when Sting got the win.
  14. Very solid six man. It was treated as more of a straight match and less chaotic. I expected a crazy brawl to start, but instead Wyatt, Harper, Ambrose, and Reigns got on the apron as the bell rang and the match began. I enjoyed Ambrose selling a lot more than Rollins. Rollins was a little over dramatic for me where Ambrose felt more natural. I really liked Harper here, his offense is always interesting, especially for a big man. Reigns is probably the biggest "sure thing" in recent history, the crowd loses their shit every time he gets involved. End sequence was great with guys flying all over the place, Rowan is the most logical guy to take the pin, he remains the least interesting to me. I loved the promo after, their first since turning fully babyface. Interesting to see how each of the guys changed their character slightly. Ambrose selling the match was probably my favorite thing from the entire show. I can picture Vince counting the dollars when Reigns is on the mic, the crowd just dying to chant his name.
  15. Starts off hot with AKIRA attacking Kanemoto before the bell. Kanemoto turns the tables and ragdolls AKIRA around by his jacket. They beat on each other a while, Kanemoto hits some brutal kicks and AKIRA hits a nice dive through the ropes. Then it gets weird. Kanemoto hurts his knee, then is seemingly powered up by AKIRA beating on the knee, then is moving around fine. He stops to yell at the ref when AKIRA turns the tables with an awesome dropkick to the head followed by a Dragon Suplex for the pin. Good match, should've been better.
  16. Arn talks about being focused on Sting and winning the World title for himself, despite this airing the same night as Beach Blast where Arn is in a 6-Man Tag. Arn had a two house show matches against Sting shortly after this but unfortunately this didn't really go anywhere.
  17. Ventura compliments Koloff's haircut. I thought they were both bald until Ventura turned around, displaying one of the strangest hairstyles in wrestling. This was taped a month ago and it was like they aired this interview on the wrong episode. Koloff wants the US title.
  18. Another Heavenly Bodies promo. Pritchard really stands out to me in these.
  19. Match 1 - Gilbert gives Lawler a back suplex, then lays flat on the mat and lets himself get pinned in a double-pin scenario while Lawler gets a shoulder up. Match 2 - Gilbert lies with his back on Lawler in a pin attempt then gets rolled up and pinned. Match 3 - Gilbert has Lawler down, then turns away and instead asks Missy Hyatt for a weapon, then gets hit with a fireball by a recovering Lawler. Gilbert keeps ruining his opportunity to defeat Jerry Lawler and has been run out of town. I feel like I am missing some context as to why this aired when it did, but it was well done. Gilbert was an awesome heel.
  20. Coraluzzo returns to complain about Memphis and "Jeremy Lawler." I didn't think the two kids were meant to resemble Lawler's real sons, using their names was just a sort of "easter egg" to those in the know. But, I know very little about the history of Memphis wrestling so I could be way off base. Lawler has this crowd in the palm of his hand. He is so unconcerned about Coraluzzo and Mike Doggendorf, he's calling out other guys in the same promo.
  21. Coraluzzo looks like an absolute doofus in the video and promises to bring a wrestler with him to Memphis. I expected that to end the segment but then he actually shows up with the mystery wrestler, Mike Doggendorf. Doggendorf looks like a pretty basic huge, stiff guy. He attacks Lawler and they brawl for a few minutes before it gets broken up by a bunch of guys, including what appears to be a Rent-A-Sting. It ends with a photo of Coraluzzo posing with two guys who I can only assume to be they men he claims to be Lawler's illegitimate children.
  22. Razor is dripping machismo. Razor Ramon was fully formed as a character from the beginning.
  23. I love this version of the theme song, with Sherri singing. This character has been done 500 times now, the wrestler in love with themselves more than anything else. It was probably a little fresher at the time. The mirror was a great prop to use, a subtle reminder of the barbershop window while also getting over Shawn's vanity.
  24. The final segment of the night. Awesome end to an awesome night. For the second night in a row, Hunter got shown up and was left licking his wounds at the end of the night. The Shield complete their turn after Kane lets it slip during a backstage segment that Hunter was behind a recent attack on them. Show closes with the new guard standing tall and the old guard promising revenge. The Shelf were six years too early with the new facemasks they wore to the ring. You have to feel for the guy in the front row in Sting facepaint. Sting was rumored to debut on this show and never appeared.
  25. Cesaro saying he was a Paul Heyman Guy was the best moment of the night. The crowd lost their shit for this and the possibilities really seem endless for Cesaro after the show. The match with Swagger after was fine. Heyman cradling Andre from the smashed trophy was awesome and Cesaro hit an incredible deadlift suplex on Swagger.
