[2008-03-30-WWE-Wrestlemania XXIV] Big Show vs Floyd Mayweather
xlynwoodx replied to Loss's topic in March 2008
Mayweather looked so small next to the Big Show, it was comical. He used his speed advantage early to pepper Big Show with punches, but started to get cocky. He took a break in the corner and drank from a jeweled chalice. Great prop. Big Show was pissed and charged at Mayweather. Mayweather moved out of the way and Show rammed one of Mayweather's security team. This guy fell splat on the ground. Show then lifted him high in the air by his shirt and nailed him again. Not sure if the guys in Mayweather's corners were actual buddies of his or just indie guys posing as security but they got knocked around like crazy. Was shocked at how game Mayweather was here, he took the huge Big Show slap to the chest then rolled around the ring whimpering. Big Show then literally walked over Mayweather who was dragged out of the ring by his crew. They tried to leave but Big Show chased them down and destroyed everybody before putting his arm around Mayweather's head like a child and walking him back to the ring. It looked like Mayweather was about to be punished by dad for breaking curfew or something. Mayweather avoids the chokeslam via low blow, then wallops Big Show with three chairshots, the last one unblocked to the head. If you are going to eat a chairshot, this is the time and place for it I guess. Mayweather then gets some brass knuckles and knocks Show out cold to get the pin. Great way to put over Show's toughness in defeat. This was a spectacle that could only happen at Wrestlemania. Has to be in the top 5 of pro wrestling celebrity matches of all time.- 2 replies

Does Cassandro have the best hair in pro wrestling? I thought this was very choreographed to start, having never seen Cassandro before I was quick to assume that this was typical for an exotico. But as things went on, it was Matt Cross who couldn't keep up. Cross tried some cool stuff, but would often pause before. He did this goofy looking splash after holding onto the ringpost like a flag that the commentators pimped as this awesome innovative move that only he could do. Later, the commentators talked about how smart he was for not wasting time arguing with the ref or yelling at the crowd after a 2 count, only to immediately pause two separate times to pose while climbing the ropes. He then missed a split-leg moonsault. Cassandro looked great, whether hitting a huge tope suicida on Cross or taking a scary bump off the top. Apparently he was banned at the time from wrestling in Arena Mexico because he's gay. That's absolutely ridiculous and I hope this policy has gone away. Nice victory roll esque maneuver off the top gives Cassandro the win. Post match hijinks with a local DJ, Cassandro steals a kiss on the cheek.

I really like how they do ring introductions for title bouts with both guys in the ring, it adds some prestige to the matches. Ambrose is selling the beatdown by Evolution on Monday, but he is FIRED UP to get his title back. Sheamus uses his power to take advantage early as Ambrose has trouble handling blows to his shoulder or midsection. Ambrose is the definition of scrappy, always fighting back or creating just a tiny bit of separation from Sheamus to plan his next move. He manages to get Sheamus locked in the Figure Four, but is too close to the ropes. You can see Ambrose's heart break a little as he realizes he has to break the hold. Sheamus fights back with a Cloverleaf, Ambrose gets to the ropes but he looks spent. Sheamus follows up with his repeated forearms to the chest spot, lifting Ambrose's shirt up to reveal his taped up ribs. Ambrose tries to turn things into a fist fight, but one kick to the ribs slows him down. Sheamus hits a Brouge Kick and Ambrose flies outside. I thought for sure things would end here, but Ambrose beats the count and the crowd is losing their shit. Sheamus is in disbelief as Ambrose struggles to get to his feet. A second Brouge Kick is too much and gives Sheamus the clean win. LOVED this match, Sheamus got a huge boost to start his reign while Ambrose fought with every ounce of his being, but wasn't at 100% and couldn't keep up.

Cena doesn't appear on Raw, then comes out the next night on Main Event to respond to Bray. The crowd goes wild when his music starts, I guess Bray's message has not yet reached Buffalo, NY. Usual Cena promo that starts off goofy but turns serious. He says you can follow the buzzards if you choose, but to be aware of the message that Bray is delivering. Cena's message is to believe in yourself and to Never Give Up. He gets pretty fired up and probably sold a bunch of t-shirts by the end.

Didn't have the electricity their previous matches had. They were pretty evenly matched, leading to a stalemate that had both teams staring each other down going to a commercial break. It was a moment that should have had the crowd going crazy but that didn't happen. I thought Luke Harper was a standout, his confidence in the ring has grown a lot. He took the majority of the match for the Wyatts and always seemed in control. There were a couple cool moments where he stymied some comebacks from the Shield, he also hit a nice tope on Rollins then stormed around outside in deranged glee. The Shield were about to give Bray a triple-powerbomb when Evolution came out. The numbers caught up to the Shield and Bray hit Reigns with Sister Abigail for the pin. A beatdown followed. Evolution gave Reigns their own triple-powerbomb and celebrated to end the show.

Zeb comes out to protest Cinco de Mayo and request the deportation of all foreign faces, including Emma, Sheamus, Santino, Cesaro and Paul Heyman. Adam Rose comes out and grabs Zeb by his moustache. Some of the crowd is singing along to his music. That could be fun with the right crowd. Rose tells Zeb to be a rosebud. Swagger tries to attack but gets dumped outside. Rose and his crew dance around the ring. Overall an underwhelming debut for Adam Rose.

Big E gets his rematch after losing the IC title the night before. I thought this was just ok. Big E can be very reckless. He will often run full speed, throwing his body at his opponent, often to his own detriment. Barrett got the win here via heel tactics. He gouged Big E's eyes to avoid the Big Ending than hit the Bull Hammer elbow for the pin.

Bryan and Brie run to the rental, but it won't start! Bryan pops the hood and fiddles with some wires. When he closes the hood, Kane is in the backseat! Brie screams and screams and screams. Bryan pulls Kane out, they brawl, Bryan gets in the car. Kane tries to grab Brie through the open sunroof as Bryan speeds off. I would agree that this should not be Daniel Bryan's first World title program. It diminishes his standing as the top wrestler in the company. Brie is a terrible actor and Kane as a character is beyond played out. This is goofy horror show stuff. I don't hate it, but I hope Bryan moves away from Kane soon.

Del Rio at this point might be the epitome of "Just A Guy." If you started watching wrestling anytime in 2014, what would you know about him? When's the last time Del Rio had any promo time, or was in any sort of storyline? He's fine in the ring, but I just feel nothing when I see him come out for a match. This was a fine 13 minute TV match. There is a storyline going on where Kane is in the arena and hiding in wait to attack Bryan and Brie. The match starts with Bryan distracted, nervous about being exposed in the arena. Bryan really telegraphs a backdrop early , giving Del Rio control. He fights back and gets his groove, getting the win with the Yes Lock. He seems to forgotten about Kane until his pyro goes off. Bryan and Brie flee backstage.

There are aspects of this feud that I enjoy. Bray representing the downtrodden and rejected vs the corporate hero John Cena appeals to me. The cage match at Extreme Rules was an absolute joke. Cena would have won despite Rowen and Harper both interfering multiple times. Super Cena had all three men down in the cage and was literally walking out when a child singing caused him to freeze in fear. The next night, Bray is gloating about his victory when Cena basically had the entire family beat on his own. Bray is doing the best he can here, but that match has pretty much killed this storyline for me. Also, big match later tonight against the Shield and no mention of it.

Doing the ring announcing for this show? Joel Gertner in a furry coat, in Spanish. Navarro and Solar, both in their fifties, have been rivals for quite some time. They both have strong mat games. One guy would get taken down, put into a strange hold, then escape and we would have a stand off. This is essentially what happened until Navarro got the win. This remained entertaining because both guys were just so smooth, gliding around each other with ease. Also, credit to Sean Waltman on commentary. He told stories of his time in Mexico and gave a good background on both men. There was a long post match where Navarro and Solar collected money and posed with fans. I assume this was also part of the intermission.

RVD is sporting a shiner from his three-way match the night before. Cesaro targets the eye some, but it doesn't go anywhere. There was a lot of hate for RVD when he came back, he seemed a step behind in his first couple matches. Maybe he just needed a few weeks to get in a groove, because I've really enjoyed him lately. He's a little slower, but his spots are still exciting and he's bumping around like someone half his age. This is a good first feud for the new Paul Heyman guy to have, since there is a history between RVD and Heyman. Also, it gives Cesaro the rub of beating an established name. RVD got caught hanging upside down in the turnbuckle. He managed to still hit Cesaro with a kick to the head, which pissed off Cesaro. Cesaro rolls out and continues to punch RVD in the head, which get his DQ'd. He continues to beat on RVD until Heyman pulls him off, telling him not to get suspended. Hopefully we see a fired up RVD next week looking for some revenge.

Sheamus admits he had been in a rut since returning from injury. He's had a lot of solid matches, but has struggled to make the next step in his career. Here's hoping the title win gives him the jump start he needs. Sheamus has no regrets about how Ambrose lost the title.

Watching on the Network, the only vignette they aired was the same one that was on last week's episode of Raw. Could have been nice to run something fresh to help amp up the excitement for his debut.

Hunter comes out while the Shield are in the ring after the Battle Royal. The Shield got lucky at Extreme Rules. Hunter announces The Shield vs. the Wyatts as tonight's main event. The Authority are clearly upset about last night's events and want to punish the Shield tonight.
-
Raw opens with Dean Ambrose coming down for a 20 Man US Title Battle Royal, set up by the Authority. Hunter must be pissed about losing to the Shield the night before and is trying to screw Ambrose. The final 5 are Ambrose, Swagger, Sheamus, and Rybaxel. Ambrose is stuck on the apron and manages to eliminate both Axel & Ryback in pretty clever ways. He gets back in, dumps Swagger, and turns around right into a HUGE Brouge Kick by Sheamus. New US champion! I've been a sucker for a battle royal since I was a kid. This was a fun way to kick off Raw and at least served a purpose. Ambrose looked great in losing, and the title needed to get off of him. Sheamus has been having great matches pretty consistently lately with a wide range of guys, maybe he'll bring some respect back to the title.

[1988-10-24-WWF-MSG, NY] Rick Rude vs Jake Roberts
xlynwoodx replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in October 1988
Rick Rude has some incredible airbrushed tights of his own face on tonight. Jake brings his wife, Cheryl, to the ring to sit ringside. Jake puts Rude in a wristlock to start, which has Rude flailing all over the ring. There was much discussion from the commentary team about how much of a distraction Cheryl would be for Jake. It ended up being Rick Rude who was more distracted by her than Jake. Rude slid out of the ring early to confront her, causing Cheryl to get out of her chair and run away. Rick would constantly be yelling at her while he had Jake beaten down. The finish came with Jake down, and Rude again going over to gloat to Cheryl. She tries to slap him, but Rude see it coming and blocks it. He turns around and attempts to slam Jake, but Jake reverses and hits the DDT! The stipulation was the first person to hit their finisher would be the winner but...the match doesn't end? Jake then gets the pinfall and the ref counts to three. Maybe I misunderstood something there. Match was average. Cheryl being ringside added some heat, but she lacked the charisma for the role. She didn't look all that concerned when Rude came after her, or at any time while Jake was being beaten down. She came into the ring after Rude was pinned and slapped the crap out of him, but didn't seem that angry with him. You never know what you are going to get with wrestlers family, sometimes they're a natural and sometimes not. -
[1988-10-24-WWF-MSG, NY] The Rockers vs Demolition
xlynwoodx replied to Kronos's topic in October 1988
MSG loved the Rockers. Commentary did a good job at the start putting over how important this match was for the Rockers. They looked great to start, the arm wringer spot on Smash, then Ax, was pretty cool. Demolition got control and slowed things down. Good comeback, Marty gets pinned after Ax hits a clothesline on him from the outside while being held by Smash. Clean win for the heels, even with Fuji at ringside. -
Not a fan of the camera work in this match. Scott suffered an extended beatdown from Vader & Bigelow. The was never a shot of Rick on the apron, motivating his partner. I feel some closeups of Scott in pain would have helped too. The director was more interested in fancy pans across the arena or shots of the crowd than getting the viewing audience into the Steiners making a comeback. The action was fine. I loved Bigelow, he moves so well for a guy his size. Vader took a Frakensteiner headfirst into the mat leading to Scott's hot tag. Scott, who was been beaten down extensively, recovers for about 10 seconds and is back in the fight. That annoys me so much more than when a guy doesn't sell limb work. Ref bump leads to Bigelow getting a Belly-to-belly for the pin. Not the finish I expected, should have taken more than one suplex to put Bigelow away. The two teams embrace afterwards in a nice moment. It looked like Bigelow was going to yell at the ref for getting in his way but the camera misses it. Crowd loved everyone here.

This felt like a grudge match as soon as the lights went down and the crowd started cheering. Cool entrances for both guys that were more like MMA walkouts. Match started and we had a pretty heated lockup where neither guy wanted to give an inch. Hase was trying to use his wrestling background to school the younger Sasaki, with some success. I wasn't feeling a lot of hate between the two, the matwork went on a little long. Things amped up when Sasaki started choking Hase with a sleeper. Hase was not happy about this, and started to light up Sasaki. He busted Sasaki open with a series of headbutts and followed up with five chokeslams before pinning Sasaki with a Northern Lights Suplex. Sasaki was not ready for this level of competition, but he showed some fire by getting up and walking out own his own. Humbled, but not broken.

Bryan attacks Kane as soon as he comes through the curtain. He shows a ton of fire early, taking out all of his frustrations on Kane. Kane looks so big next to Bryan, and every time he hits Bryan, he goes down. Bryan had been wearing a neck brace recently on television, selling the multiple Tombstone attack from Kane on Raw. The neck injury never comes into play in the match, which seemed like a misstep. The brawl around backstage some. There are a few planned spots where Kane throws something through a car window, then puts his fist through another. That was cool. Bryan gets a hold of a tire iron and wallops Kane. For some reason, the match is No DQ, but pinfalls came only happen in the ring. So Bryan rolls Kane onto a forklift and drives him back to the ring. He lifts Kane up over the ropes and dumps him. Bryan then climbs up on to the pallet and chants YES! before hitting Kane with a huge headbutt for a near fall. I drive a forklift and pallets are not always very sturdy when on the forks. I was pretty nervous watching Bryan climb up and jump off but it all worked out. There is nothing cooler than Bryan standing tall with the entire crowd chanting YES! Kane worked a few spots where he caught Bryan coming at him with a chokeslam. He caught a Bryan tope and chokeslammed him through a table. Bryan looked done, but instead of attempting a pin, Kane got out another table and lit it on fire. Bryan recovered enough to slingshot Kane into the table. They went wild with the fire extinguishers, which had to suck for everyone ringside. Kane was so disoriented from everything as he rolled into the ring, Bryan hit a perfectly timed running knee and got the pin. The fire spot was pretty safe but looked cool. It gives Bryan the visual of sending Kane "Back to Hell" which he promised to do. As Bryan is leaving, Kane gets up and cackles in the ring. There was a lot of complaining about Kane being the first challenge for Bryan after WM30. I didn't have a problem with it as long as Bryan was booked strong. I would have preferred Bryan get the clean win, Kane goes away for a while, and Bryan moves on to another challenge. Instead it looks like the Kane feud must continue.

Going in to this, I predicted the basic flow of this match would be Hot Start --> Evolution beat up Rollins --> Crazy Brawl. This is essentially how things went, with an added Ambrose beat down thrown in as well. The crowd stayed pretty quiet during the duel beat down segments, it was almost like they were just waiting for the chaos to begin. Once Ambrose tagged out, business picked up and the crowd started to get into things. Bodies started flying all over the place. Seth Rollins completely eats shit as Hunter dodges a dive, crashing headfirst into the barrier. Just an insane bump. Hunter and Ambrose brawled outside and both tumbled over the announce table. This leads to Ambrose running down both announce tables and diving onto both Hunter and Orton. There is a big crowd brawl between Hunter/Orton and Rollins/Ambrose, culminating with Rollins doing an ECW-like dive off the upper deck onto all three men. Back to the ring and Reigns hits a Superman Punch and Spear onto Batista for the victory. Due to who they were up against, this one stuck to the "WWE Formula" a little more than the Shield matches tend to do. I don't really want to try to compare this match to the Shield/Wyatt matches. Evolution are long time established top names and them just being in this match, bumping around for the Shield, and taking the clean loss are something that never would have happened in their original run. I had a blast just watching these two teams battle around the arena.

A rare US Title defense from Ambrose. All three heels attacked him to start, took turns beating him up. After Ambrose rolled out of the ring, it turned into Del Rio vs. Rybaxel. Things picked up when Ambrose returned and guys started flying all over the place. Del Rio has Ryback in an armbar, Ryback just lifts Del Rio up and onto his shoulders to hit Shell Shock. Axel pulls Ryback out to steal the pin. Axel does this goofy horror movie-like crawl across the ring to get to Del Rio but Ambrose runs in and rolls him up to retain his title. Rybaxel attack him but Rollins & Reigns storm the ring and destroy both guys. The Shield stand tall leading in to Extreme Rules. Poor Ryback keeps getting destroyed.

Bray talks about how when he climbs over the cage at Extreme Rules, he will bring the Cenation with him. Cena will be all alone and a decrepit old man. Bray is convinced that when he beats Cena, all of Cena's fans will forget about him and follow Bray. I'm not so sure about that.
