  1. One big difference between NJPW and AJPW s how heavily the ring is miced. NJPW you hear so much more of the grunts and screams. It can be a little jarring.
  2. Dutch had a wicked short clothesline. Champion had a pretty decent superkick to go with the awesome 80s hair. Jarrett...umm, didn't look like he sucked?
  3. First things first. I LOVE this match. It is one of the definitive Southern tags I have ever seen and Cronette just adds to it in droves. There was a comment about Kerry von Erich being that 30 year old who thinks he's still 18 and how sad it is in another thread. I like how the RnRs are this close to being those guys in 1990. The timeframe for their gimmick has clearly passed. But they manage to make it work by being an incredible tag team. Also, it's strange how all of these spots still seem cutting edge compared to most heavyweight wrestling you see considering they have been using them for years. Easily my favorite match on the set so far.
  4. When the NWA goes cheesy, they go so much farther than they should. It's like they try so hard to out-WWF the WWF that they push into train wreck territory.
  5. Puzzling stuff given the main event. People tuned in to see Sting in the main against J-Tex and now...this. Has there ever been any insider info on why exactly this had to happen?
  6. Completely agree with the title. Looked like a good tag match with a useless gimmicked finish.
  7. Cornette completely missing Funk's reasons for him getting the show was funny stuff. Funk will be missed.
  8. I'm on board with Martel eating this shit up. He's perfectly playing the gimmick to get as many boos as possible. Not that it matters because Vince was never going to push him. But sometimes it's about having fun doing what you do.
  9. Once again, it has to be said that even though this isn't where you want things to be, it's where they are. Great heel promo to re-establish the Horsemen. Depressing when you think about all of the ways this could have gone though.
  10. Hey, Toni Adams was in there with some weird-ass Road Warriors shit going on. Is THAT not worth the price of admission?
  11. Maybe one of the ABCs was to go to Dundee's school. You think Jarrett and Lawler realized that this kind of crap could bring in some income in Memphis and Dallas around this time?
  12. I think Lawler's short jokes about Dundee come from their long and heated rivalry that always existed even when they tagged. He just likes fucking with Billy about that and trying to get a rise out of him. If Lawler was less giving in their matches it would be a burial, but it usually ends up being just an easy shot to take.
  13. Warrior's stuff is crap. It is nonsense of the lowest order with the intent of sounding mystical. BUT, it's different from anything else you will ever see. People tend to latch on to shit like that. One mroe thing. HO KOGAN!! Best thing the Warrior ever gave us.
  14. One thing that strikes me about Lawler so far is his versatility. He's good at just about any type of promo you can cut. Not only that, but he's great at being that guy you know is bullshitting you, but still sounds really convincing. I woder if the too much protesting wasn't a little bit on purpose. Lawler had to be smart enough to know that the "company belt" line was enough and that might be more of a babyface promo.
  15. That black lady should have been invited back as a regular crowd member. Her interactions with Lawler are some of the best on the set so far.
  16. I was pretty impressed by this. Cheese is expected in your wrestling music videos, so that didn't throw me. Dundee as the working-class, blue collar guy is the right play and definitely gets across here.
  17. I was impressed with Pillman as well. Woman looks incredible every time she comes out. Flair's reaction to Pillman's insult is exactly what you would hope for. Time to teach this young punk a lesson!
  18. I was amused by Ole getting legit pissed at Lex for smirking. Ole is such a fun promo and I'm not sure if Lex coulcn't help himself or was egging him on. I'm still not sure how Ole could have lasted as a babyface. He's just so great at coming across as a cortchedy, angry, violent old man.
  19. JYD is a really good humble babyface promo. Doesn't mean I ever want to see him wrestle in 1990.
  20. Lowrance at one point (I forget if it's this match) covers for all of these nonsense ref bumps by saying Lawler favors targeting the ref as a tactic. Really good work by both Lawler and Dundee, doesn't come close to the LLT "eye" match on the Memphis set though.
  21. This set makes me excited that I have the Continental/SE set. Fuller is really incredible on the mic.
  22. On the Dave Brown being the star I disagree. But I don't think it works anywhere near as well without Brown playing the straight man to Lawler's egomaniac.
  23. Lawler kills it (and everyone not named Dave Brown) here. Awesome segment.
  24. So much awesome in this segment. Although I wonder how long Memphis/USWA would have lasted without Lawler carrying it on his back after the mid 80s.
  25. I thought that Fujiwara was in charge early because it was 95% on the mat. Reason being Takada didn't want to give him the openings he would have to when he went on offensive flurries. So once Takada realized that he had to either take Fujiwara down with big flurries or eventually get caught for playing too safe, Fujiwara egged him on with the corner sequence. Takada going for the leglock at the end was strange for sure, given the only time he was in charge was after a big flurry. Fujiwara's selling is really strange and not what you'd be used to as a wrestling fan. But he does sell for everything but that one leg lock. Also, his use of body and head movement to slip big strikes is incredible.
