  1. Man, one thing you forget during Lawler's big heel run is how damn great he is at selling. Kind of odd, that.
  2. Travis chased Lawler, Gossett, Garvin and the DWBs away after the Jarrett match. Wasn't thrilled by the overuse of "punk" here. Otherwise fine promo.
  3. That hiney in the 90s line had me rolling. Lawler STILL selling that one punch.
  4. Rockin' Randy is nowhere over 240. Damn you Bill Dundee!! Lawler giving the full-on sell of a whiffed Nitron punch and trying to break his neck bumping for it is incredible. Nate really wants to get revenge on Jerry. They did a real good job of getting that over.
  5. Lawler's reactions make this work. Otherwise it would have been way too dry. The "sudden death" rule seems like it could be a fun kind of gimmick for a promotion to use.
  6. I was also impressed here. Rude kept that speed bag moving while talking! Very good series of vignettes so far.
  7. So is this where the Horsemen should have ended? Ole on his way out, Arn hurt, Flair in a battle with Luger for the title. I mean, it works, let Luger have his run as the champ while Sting is working his way back. Sting gets to have his revenge on Flair and Arn separately, Flair settles into more of a beloved babyface right at the top tier role and Arn is a gatekeeper for the up and coming babyfaces. It would have all worked, but I suppose politics and all.
  8. I think Rude could have been something bigger than he was if he'd have been given this kind of gimmick earlier. He can pull off serious just as well as sleazy.
  9. Lawler is absolute gold, as he is in all of these. If this is the one with the three teenage girls, I imagine his comments were not what was going through his head.
  10. Valentine looks like he'd rather be anywhere else. One of the worst Brother Love shows so far.
  11. Loving Ole so far in 1990. The guy is such an incredible promo that even if he can't wrestle I want him to be a Horseman.
  12. If Champion's hair gets any bigger it will eat him alive! Seriously, that is some of the most ridiculous hair I've ever seen.
  13. Good enough match for the heels involved. Hayes showed some flashes of being serviceable. Gibson should stay away from microphones and let Ricky do the talking.
  14. Here's what I love about Fujiwara so far in 1990. He's like an old martial arts teacher. He is clearly physically declining and not able to stand toe-to-toe with the Maedas, Takadas or even the Yamazakis of the world. But he's got this massive bag of tricks that nobody comes close to matching. So he'll use his body and head movement to make stuff miss the mark. And he'll do that to bait guys into bigger things and make themselves more off-balance. And he's patient on the mat, he'll take a little pain to find a counter-submission that sticks. Also, he's very good at controlling his opponent's momentum. Yamazaki is really good at mixing trying to get in on Fujiwara with strikes and trying to catch him with a submission, finally getting one that Fujiwara has to go to the ropes for. Fuji comes back swinging, which plays into Yamazaki's strength and it pays off for Yamazaki. But not before Fujiwara takes a powder to slow Yamazaki's momentum, even if it didn't work. I really dig Fujiwara as this formidable guy because he can catch you off-guard in so many different ways. He's not going to wow you with big anything. He'll just sneakily get you into a spot where you are all of a sudden in trouble when it looked like you were in charge.
  15. Anyone else notice that Rude was also very heavily dressed for lifting? It's like they wanted everyone to forget the whole slimeball, look-at-me ladies' man character and make him into a serious challenger in just weeks.
  16. I thought this was an interesting match because it was a better version of Takada vs. Fujiwara. That one had Takada as the younger guy going against the more experienced veteran Fujiwara and having to use his stand up striking to counter Fujiwara's advantage on the ground. Here that story works better with Takada actually having better, but different stand-up. Anjo is clearly the quicker of the two on his feet and tries to use that to get the upper hand on Takada. But Takada knows when and how to counter when Anjo leaves himself open during his flurries. So it's not truly an advantage he can go to. Anjo also takes a lot more chances with risky submission attempts to try and surprise Takada, which gets him caught more often than not. I liked this better than the Maeda squash. Anjo never had a chance, sure, but at least Takada gave him quite a bit more than Maeda gave Nakano.
  17. I got the impression that every time Nakano got real scrappy with Maeda, he was gonna get pummeled for being such an ambitious peasant in the ring with the king. And usually he did. Fun match, but something was missing for me.
  18. Sherri has been a legit surprise for me on the 1990 set. I knew from her 80s work that she was great, but she is at times the highlight of the Sherri/Savage connection. Here she is just a monster, kicking the living daylights out of Sapphire and Dusty's response is perfect.
  19. Piper showing up was really fun, and I liked Raven here. Madril was actually pretty damn entertaining as the narrator.
  20. Haynes being a dick to Cossie doesn't make him a heel to me. Terrible announcer, even if Raven makes him look passable. I think that the "valet" was just out there to hold the hat and then showed her heelish persona by drooling all over the now-evil Billy Jack.
  21. Haynes turning on Oregon is pretty incredible. After watching the Portland set I wondered how he could ever go heel in Portland. Also, him turning on Rip Oliver and his son is all kinds of poetic. The promo could have been executed with a bit more...professionalism I guess. But I don't think Billy Jack was ever the best promo, so I'll give him this one.
  22. Great stuff by the Horsemen. Luger was pretty damn over as a babyface and this had to help with that. How will WCW handle Sting coming back with Luger already positioned as the heir apparent anyway?
  23. Poor, poor Sting. The guy goes from for sure next World Champ to....this. No questions where his career started it's downward spiral.
  24. Loved everything about this. Sherri was incredible throughout the whole thing. Savage and Tenryu worked a great match for the time they were given, but Sherri completely stole the show.
  25. This was funny. Good on the Bolsheviks for playing up their end the way they should have.
