[1990-04-15-UWF-Fighting Area] Nobuhiko Takada vs Yoji Anjo
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
I thought this was an interesting match because it was a better version of Takada vs. Fujiwara. That one had Takada as the younger guy going against the more experienced veteran Fujiwara and having to use his stand up striking to counter Fujiwara's advantage on the ground. Here that story works better with Takada actually having better, but different stand-up. Anjo is clearly the quicker of the two on his feet and tries to use that to get the upper hand on Takada. But Takada knows when and how to counter when Anjo leaves himself open during his flurries. So it's not truly an advantage he can go to. Anjo also takes a lot more chances with risky submission attempts to try and surprise Takada, which gets him caught more often than not. I liked this better than the Maeda squash. Anjo never had a chance, sure, but at least Takada gave him quite a bit more than Maeda gave Nakano. -
[1990-04-15-UWF-Fighting Area] Akira Maeda vs Tatsuo Nakano
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
I got the impression that every time Nakano got real scrappy with Maeda, he was gonna get pummeled for being such an ambitious peasant in the ring with the king. And usually he did. Fun match, but something was missing for me.- 12 replies

[1990-04-14-WWF-Superstars] Dusty Rhodes vs Bobby Salsa
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
Sherri has been a legit surprise for me on the 1990 set. I knew from her 80s work that she was great, but she is at times the highlight of the Sherri/Savage connection. Here she is just a monster, kicking the living daylights out of Sapphire and Dusty's response is perfect. -

Piper showing up was really fun, and I liked Raven here. Madril was actually pretty damn entertaining as the narrator. -
Haynes being a dick to Cossie doesn't make him a heel to me. Terrible announcer, even if Raven makes him look passable. I think that the "valet" was just out there to hold the hat and then showed her heelish persona by drooling all over the now-evil Billy Jack.
-
Haynes turning on Oregon is pretty incredible. After watching the Portland set I wondered how he could ever go heel in Portland. Also, him turning on Rip Oliver and his son is all kinds of poetic. The promo could have been executed with a bit more...professionalism I guess. But I don't think Billy Jack was ever the best promo, so I'll give him this one.

[1990-04-14-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] Ric Flair and Lex Luger
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
Great stuff by the Horsemen. Luger was pretty damn over as a babyface and this had to help with that. How will WCW handle Sting coming back with Luger already positioned as the heir apparent anyway? -
[1990-04-14-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] "THINK IT OVER, CREEP!"

Poor, poor Sting. The guy goes from for sure next World Champ to....this. No questions where his career started it's downward spiral. -
[1990-04-13-WWF/AJPW Summit] Randy Savage vs Genichiro Tenryu
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
Loved everything about this. Sherri was incredible throughout the whole thing. Savage and Tenryu worked a great match for the time they were given, but Sherri completely stole the show.- 20 replies

[1990-04-01-WWF-Wrestlemania VI] Steve Allen and the Bolsheviks
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
This was funny. Good on the Bolsheviks for playing up their end the way they should have. -
Great promo by Jake and post-match was perfect. Starting to think Ted had something to do with how great this feud was for where it was on the card.

Good shoot-y striker vs grappler to start. Then we go into ECW style arena dragging. That made me pay attention for sure. Both guys get bloodied up and try to put each other away with big, stiff bombs. Then when they both stay down for the count, some asshole comes out to call them pussies and tell them how they should still be fighting. My guess is this guy is some kind of hero of bloodbath type slugfests, and I hope he is or he's got no business being out there. The restart takes way too long and it's probably because both guys are legitimately gone. Good desperation slugfest as both guys are tripping over themselves for maybe a minute. Then they both get dragged to the back while the asshole tells us how great either his promotion or those two guys are. Strange, strange stuff, definitely one that sticks with you.

[1990-04-01-WWF-Wrestlemania VI] Hulk Hogan vs Ultimate Warrior
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
I agree with the comic book come to life as well. Too long on some of the spots but I get what they were after. Good enough for being a Hogan/Warrior match. -
Buzz is awesome with his crazy grunts. I want Sullivan's idea of them as tweeners who just mess with everyone.
-
Why is Jimmy Valiant madness so much easier for me to accept than the Hogan/Warrior stuff? But it is, so yeah.

Lawler had to do something to make this dog work. I did like Kerry not coming off as a complete musclehead.- 10 replies

You cold tell Haku loved working with Bobby. Heenan of course cuts a great promo that is actually focused. -
[1990-03-03-USWA-Memphis TV] Music Video: Southern Rockers / Jimmy Valiant spot
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
Jimmy Valiant is pretty stoked to be champ. Southern Rockers are...kinda iffy, but if they only had a few matches to pull from I get it. -
[1990-03-30-USWA Texas] Jeff Jarrett & Bill Dundee vs Robert Fuller & Brian Lee
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
Jarrett's hot tag was actually really good. Good tag match from a team that no longer exists, now in both sides of the territory.- 10 replies

[1990-03-31-TWA-Spring Spectacular] D.C. Drake vs Larry Winters ('I Quit')
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
Opening made Drake seem very much like a fifth rate Stan Hansen. Press box stuff was great until Drake just.....left? Then the match drags and drags until it mercifully ends.- 10 replies

[1990-03-10-WWF-Superstars] Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior promos
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
Random thought during Hogan/Warrior promos #2. What happens if (and I think this was about the time time capsules were a big deal) some fan from this time who worshipped this feud put all the promos and no match footage into their time capsule? How do future generations react to the epic battle of words between HO KHOGAN and the Warrrya?- 12 replies
